- If you are a Half Life fan, then you'll know how hard it is to be a fan of that series, but you may also find the G-man very interesting. Who or what is he? What are his motives? Well, I'd like to say I have the answers to those questions, but I don't. I do however have a tale to tell you about this individual, so in this video I will be giving you the characteristics and the story of The G-Man, the story that we know of at least.
WARNING! There are major plot spoilers for Half Life 1, 2 and the episodes in this video.

maybe he wanted to describe his "employers" in a manner that humans can comprihend
...
I have thought about this many times.
He does not have employers but something he had to think about to describe as employers, the question is was he hiding their role/identity or was he trying to interpret what they were so we could understand him. Very interesting indeed.

Gman didn't know about the Resonance Cascade. He CAUSED the Resonance Cascade by giving Black Mesa the crystal for research, causing the portals from Xen, and causing the Combine to come.

I hate that nobody talks about his obvious connection to aperture science. The reason we don’t see him in the portal games is that by then the black mesa incident had already happened and the combine had already invaded. By then he had already done what he needed to do with aperture which is fuck up the borealis. This is shown when the Gman warns Eli in episode 2. This warning is the Gman telling Eli that He needs to prepare for a harder battle against the combine if he destroys the borealis. Ofc this is because the Gman went to much lengths in order to fuck up the borealis so that the resistance can use it against the combine. Remember the Gman has complete control over everything in the half-life universe. He fucked up black mesa. He decides if the resistance wins against the combine. He can keep you in stasis for years and decades. He can change critical events in the half-life universe (Eli Vance death being undone in half-life Alyx) Hell if we were to go really far we could say that the Gman was the black mesa spy that stole all of aperture’s inventions and research in 1950s-1970s. But this is all just speculation. Just remember that the Gman is way more powerful than you might think.

The G-Man is my all time favorite video game antagonist, Valve truly created a unique character, his appearance, the way he addresses Gordon Freeman, all done in a sinister way, his charisma, mystery, everything about the character is truly unlike anything else in gaming. The fact that the original Half-Life is 25 years old now and we still don’t know who exactly the G-Man is, so many countless theories yet still a mystery, simply remarkable writing by Valve. 👏👏👏
It's interesting to think about what would have happened if the Vortigaunts DIDN'T stop the G-man for putting Gordon into stasis at the end of HL2. The Citadel would have been destroyed (it was about to explode at the start of Ep1, Alyx and Gordon just delayed it) and the superportal been opened anyway, and Gordon safely tucked away in stasis nowhere to stop the events from playing out. So he wanted the superportal to open and the combine to come through. Now isn't that interesting! I still don't believe he has any affiliations with the combine though, that wouldn't make sense - even if it sounds like it.
Great video btw, I really enjoy G-man theories like this.
Yeah it's such a mind boggling thing. I don't believe the G-Man is affiliated with the Combine either, but the amount he does that essentially aids them is interesting! I've heard a theory about him being an Alien and that the Combine have taken control of his world, but I'm not sure I'd be convinced that's the case. I've got a feeling if we eventually do see Half Life 3/Episode 3, then it'll raise more questions in regards to the G-Man and even fewer answers, but then again he is more of a focus now in a way, for Gordon at least.
Thanks as well! Glad you enjoyed it.
When you think about it, he did bring the Combine to Earth via Black Mesa, it all seems as if he wants to start some universal uprising, and Earth is the battlefield. Perhaps the interest he's showed in Alyx, maybe he will use her as his weapon, to bring destruction and chaos, kinda like Elizabeth from Bioshock Infinite.
It's more than likely that Gman is an inhuman entity, but is it possible that he is an Advisor in disguise?
Yeah he could have more use for her than he originally thought, but I wouldn't be suprise if her use to him was just to help keep Gordon alive. Hmm, I never thought about him being an Advisor to be honest. I would put good money on him being an alien, Combine or otherwise.
Gman is a former Black Mesa employee who went missing in Xen. They found him next to the portal the day Gordon showed up.
It's been solved if Valve sticks to Mark Laidlaw's original story.
The G-Man is a hatched Shu'ulathoi (Combine advisor) using Gordon and humanity to free his race from the Combine.
@@yuothineyesasian But wait aren't the Combine advisors the masterminds behind the combine invasion? why would they free themselves if they are the ones leading the charge. Unless the Combine and the Vortigaunts are at war and Earth got caught in the crossfire...

Before playing Half-Life 1 & 2, I always thought G-Man was just..this guy. But after playing Half-Life 1 & 2, I get chills every time I hear his voice. The thing that gives me the chills is the fact that, he's basically a god. He can screw about with time all he wants, as long as there aren't Vortigaunts (I apologise if I didn't spell that correctly, I never really saw the name too much) blocking him. The worst part is, G-Man could probably erase time if he wanted, but Gordon, Alyx, Kleiner, Eli, Barney, Breen, and all of them are basically his toys, and they keep him entertained long enough, stalling him in a way. If Gordon and them weren't there, G-Man would continue going through timelines until he found the original Half-Life timeline, where the player actually goes on an adventure. If that didn't happen, G-Man would have destroyed all of those timelines.(If possible) In a way, Gordon and them are saving everything from him. He isn't just stopping the Combine, and destroying Breen, he's keeping the timelines safe. If none of that happened, and G-Man destroyed the timelines, Half-Life wouldn't exist, along with Black Mesa. If you think about it, G-Man is the puppet master, and the timelines are his puppet stages, with thousands of little props and puppets within them.
Jesus you're right
My theory for gman and his employers are that gman is a messenger and intervener, while his employers are interdimensional chaos gods,Wich the vortagaunt, combine and xen all fear and are fleeing from the employers home dimension

@@arlosteiner8382 The right man in the wrong place can make all the difference in the world :)
Whoever G-man is but he is not a human for sure
He was going to be in Portal 2 aswell, There is a cut Wheatley dialog where he states "There was a man with a briefcase who wanted to see you" almost as if he also controlled what happened in Portal 2 (aka he may have been what causes Glados to go crazy and kill everything).
Destroy Aperture, cause the war on Earth in an attempt to find the Borialis, for whatever reason, that ship is very important in both games, almost as important as GMAN if not more so.
I bet it was G-Man who teleported the Borealis, Rattman's hidden dialog did say "it's gone sir it's been stolen, the ship is stolen".
But where did you get the information that Wheatley mentioning the G-Man was formerly existing content?
Prepare to unforeseen consequences meant: Prepare to be quite disappointed for the rest of the series because now it's moba time.
Valve is the G-Man. He told Gordon (us the players) that we should be prepared for the upcoming unforeseeable future. GabeN had planned the microtransactions ahead before the original release of CSGO and Dota 2. They took the risk and end up being successful as before. The players (as Gordon) had been surprised and didn't foreseen the consequences of our actions. Our actions of fueling the HL franchise into making the STEAM platform, more popular than ever before.
Now the future has finally, ended.
Well I think after half life alyx ending you understand that sentence

You know how scary the gman sightings must've been in half life 1 back in 1998, with no knowledge of hl2
There is a model of the inside of his case HL1 files show it. it contains a gun, 3 pencils, a Paper and a ID
I feel that G-Man does have ultimately good intentions, but he is fine with sacrificing many lives to achieve whatever his employer's goals are.

I have another theory that g-man is from the future(Like many many centuries later) where he does certain experiments that lead to him becoming the gman.
Now all he does is try to stop the combine so that it will make the universe sort of balanced.
Maybe he has no proper objectives at all.
For his employers I have a theory.
As he has no objective he works for other advanced lifeforms that give him something in exchange.
Or maybe if you know the never ending theory that when you die you start a new journey....
Gman is searching for a new person to take over his role as gman when he decides to die.
You chose!
Nice theory it could be real actually.
What's interesting to me about The G-Man is that he seems to be, for me personally, a figment of metaphorical poetry. Meaning, he is the ever watching eye of the hidden Government source that we, as the public, are not able to interfere with. I think that the reason he is always seen throughout the entirety of Half-life is because he is the thing that you have to look for if you want to see.
The G-Man reminds me of The Tall Man from Phantasm.
Im surprised nearly 2 years later no one in this comment section has mentioned "The death of Eli Vance" and how poorly that quote aged.
his cryptic messages are part of the rules which were set by himself, and the "something" in the water was also done by gman, which was meant counter both the combine and resistance
0:20 You can see the contents of his briefcase in half-life 1 with noclip and the original textures.
A while ago, Boundary Break went through half life 1 and showcased everything interesting he found. If you position your camera into the Gman's briefcase, there actually is a texture inside of it. It's some sort of futuristic identification for Black Mesa with his picture on it.
Really.
I think it’s important to note though that the implications of who gman was an represented in half life 1 is radically different than what we learn about him later and the character he is in current canon. It’s believed that in the original half life that he was meant to be “the administrator” we hear about, or a regular “man in black”. However I think who he was and meant to represent was rewritten for the plot of half life 2.
Not to mention that the interior texture isn’t really canon, as it wasn’t something that was meant to be seen by the player
My theory was and still remains the same. Gman is actually a metegame concept. He is beyond the world of half life and he is employed to "nudge" things in a peculiar way. His employers? None other than the game developers themselves who use the gman to nudge the game in the way they want. In other words, the gman is nothing more than an embassador of the game developers, of the "true world" inside the game itself. This is why he is omnipowerful, but at the same time he answer to someone above.
Great idea however i dont see how the Vortigaunts would be able to stop them then... that would mean the game devs may be at risk to the threat of the Xen population
@@L33T_Taco metaphorically we are gordon freeman and metaphorically the gman is the game developers's "employee"
Gman is related to Gmod?
@@zela7443 Hmm, you could also argue WE the players are also extensions of G-man. A big concept in Half Life is the illusion of free choice, Gordon in both games does everything WE control him to do, for OUR purposes. Just something I thought of lol
Fun theory but cuts gmans potential and story telling too short. its good backwards thinking but just doesnt feel good in the end.. we want a real story. With all of the cliff hangers they have left us in these stories it would be a bummer if Valve came out and said its just them talking to us through a character . Everyone knows who the gman is, we just want to know where hes from and who these people are. Basically another dimension in the game. Could you imagine visiting the world that the gman is from? Half Life 3 could visit his world. This can make the Half life universe even bigger and allow their creativity to expand .
The answer is in Half Life Alyx, as the game has told us more than episode 2 did....
The ending to half-life Alyx really changes things now.

welcome to the world of Half Life
Gman is from the (never-developed) Prospero universe, which was the basis for Steam and Workshop.
In other words, Gman is a metafictional stand-in for valve itself, his "employers" are valve and the gaming industry. Everything he says to Gordon/the player has to do with future games in development
What if "unforeseen consequences" refers to the Black Mesa incident - the chapter is call "unforeseen consequences after all. It could be a time loop thing that the G-man wants to see continue.
It is possible that G-man is like a stronger and more “unnatural” Nihilanth, having his god-like race wiped out by the Combine and now he’s leading a sort of indirect rebellion against the Combine, and Earth is just another point in his grand and ancient plan of revenge
“I would say the gman knew the black Mesa incident would happen and wanted them too”
He supplied the crystal that caused the resonance cascade, of course knew and wanted what would happen. Why else would a space god be dicking around a human research facility

I've never played a Half-Life game, but I see the G-Man as an insert for the game's writers to not have such tight canon, especially since one of the writers even said they dont care about canon. I love the Half-Life universe and story so far
your making it seem so creepy now i got the chills and no longer like half life main story

What if, the nihilinth, in his superbrain, time bending power, cast a projection of g man into the future, and foresaw everything to the detail, with some greater purpose in mind, dying intentionally to fulfill his later goal. Also opening portals at the exact locations where he foresaw gordon end up at the exact points in time. I mean, come on, what are the odds, that the crowbar nerd kills this godly kinda monster..
The fact that he takes contracts, has extraordinary powers, used certain proxies for large historical movements, and chooses to abide by certain rules placed upon him; reminds me very much of the magi in The Republic of Thieves.
absoulutely love this video and the story-telling-twist you added to make it more interesting. Will you be doing any updates now Alyx is out..?
Great Video, I didn't know half of this!
PLOT TWIST: G man is actually Mr. Rogers with power that’s over nine thousand.
HAAHAHA FUNNY MEME SO FUNNY
it's a cosmic creature that appears as a human because we can't understand the existence of that being
cosmic horror
This can be said because I know the person that created this story, Mark Laidlaw. The G-Man is a go betwener that recruits the best. Corporal Shepherd was a wild card because, especially because of his non standard training. And that's exactly why the G-Man recruited him.
You said that Gordon didn't age and that he is still the same age as he was in Half-Life 1, but that's not true. Gordon was in his 20s in the first Half-Life and in his 40s in Half-Life 2. So he did age.
Hes still physically 20 years old, he was in stasis for 20 years, so he's technically 40, but he's still actually 20
Gordon is 27 in HL1. The G-Man puts him in a time stasis for 20 years up to his return in HL2. Physically, he never ages between those years. In time though, he’s technically 47.
k he’s like captain America. Captain America is actually 100 something, but physically he is about 20-30.
Really nice video!
Great video!
This sounds like an SCP
You dont need the g-man to save earth. All you need is a crazed scientist with a crowbar.

1 hand gun 2 pencil
1 electric device with green font black background with g man picture and profile
in first cut content
you can scare him by shooting him, it will make him run away
and g man let the alien creature thing capture him, he could have easily escape but i guess it make it easier for alyx to find him
nice facts. my theory is that gman is simply a way for game developers to speak to player. the places where you see gman most of time in HL2 are places worth investigating, while in Hl1 are places you are meant to go to.
I really really love you're content, your channel is a staple in my nostalgia. Here's a cracker, dear Raven 🍘
G-Man is probably an inside joke of how powerful "Government Men" is.
Glad you mention Time and Freeman's not getting older between HL and HL2...
Freeman was in Stasisjso it's clear why he didn't get older but Eli Vance, Isaac Kleiner and foremost Barney Calhoun didn't also look 20 years older. Eli had the white hair on the side of his head still in Black Mesa, Isaac was still bold and white haired and Barney, well Barney looks like he should have been 15 at most, during the resonance cascade?
About the G-Man, the Nihilanth told you about the G-Man and tried to warn you. He said, "You are man, he is not man, for you he comes, for you".
But he isn't related the combine either, because in Half Life 2 Combine entities are hostile towards the G-Man and entities related to the Resistance, are friendly. I don't know, what the G-Man is up to but it looks like, that he is a entity, able to manipulate time and space and is on the humans side, at least for now.
I think, he talked Breen into the experiment, so that he is able to put Breen in "charge" of humanity, because the only other option would be even worse but with this option, humanity has at least some time to resist.
I think, that the G-Man is at least an double agent or from a, yet unknown, faction that resists the combine as well and try to free or at least utilizes other species in their war againsg the combine.
I think that Gman's (or his employers') original plan was to only have Freeman destroy the citadel and then have Alyx destroy the combine on her one. However, in episode one, Gman would try to give Gordon another job before the vortigaunts stopped him, so he could help Alyx defeat the combine. Now, what does Gman do after he's stopped from taking Freeman again? I think that he takes Shephard from his stasis to do this job that was undescribed to us.
I think the Gman is just a part of an advanced alien race that controls the universe
If the G-Man entity is able to control humans, that would be a simple explanation for his human appearance, he could simply just control that one man as his "puppet" to communicate with humans.
To be honest, the Gman and the Combine are the least of humanity's problems, whatever's happening with Gman's employers seems to be much MUCH bigger than what humanity and the combine can comprehend.
It's been solved if Valve sticks to Mark Laidlaw's original story.
The G-Man is a hatched Shu'ulathoi (Combine advisor) using Gordon and humanity to free his race from the Combine.
I feel like someone needs to figure out G-mans annual salary. Im pretty sure being an intergalactic businessman pays pretty well. Maybe well find out during the heat death of the universe when Half Life 3 is finally released.
3 fiddy and a tuna sandwich
The pacing of this video feels like When you really gotta meet the minimum word count of a report. Other than that pretty solid stuff
My all theories about that guy;
1: He can be working for the Combine.
2: If he's working for the Combine, he must be a human with inhuman powers. Like the Combine Soldiers
3: His employers might be trying to steal the teleporting technology in Borealis. (That means they are in a war with the Combine)
4: Maybe he doesn't even have employers.
5: He might be came from future and see Gordon failed, so he might be went back again and saved Alyx from the Black Mesa. Then before three years of the events in Half-Life 2, he took her like Gordon.
6: That means Half-Life 2's events aren't present anymore. Or are they?
7: In Half-Life 3, I definitely think there will be something about Shephard. If he didn't forgot to stop his aging too.
8: There could be a boss fight with G-Man with the help of Vortigaunts.
9: Humans and the Combine might work together and defeat G-Man's employers.
10: Then G-Man could tell everything to whoever the guy he is listening him. (I want Gordon to do that.)
11: Why didn't G-Man took the Barney too. Is he keeping him to help Gordon?
12: So he activated the bomb at the Black Mesa again. He knew there would be the Combine Invasion. He might be trying to learn where is the teleporting technology for his employers and use Gordon for that. (He learned it's in the Borealis, so there will definitely be Borealis in the next game if we won't see the past time again.)
13: I have too many theory right now but I won't write all of them. So my last theory is Valve doesn't have an idea what they should do about Half-Life and its story. That's why they are taking their time to develope.
*Thank you for reading. Sorry for killing your time :>*
the gmans briefcase contains a handgun a notepad and a electric id card you can see the inside of his briefcase in hl1
I was gonna ask for your opinion about something in the case, but you need to have played Alyx first, so, have you?
I feel like the Gman wanted all this to happen, for the Combine to invade, for Earth to surrender, for an uprising to spark after 20 years of beatings, for the Overwatch Transhuman Arm to be stranded..
G man says: Pay the rent now!
The infamous G Man is the embody mind , of The Nihilant who was dying and about to be discovered by The Combine, so after a random control at Black Mesa, the Nihilant choose the man in the blue suit, a random dude, to find someone qualified to break his chains. He sent the vortignauts to bait freeman to lead him to the right path to him, and in return for their services, the leash is off. The Vortigaunts saw the limitless potential of The Freeman and imposed that The Freeman should be kept alive. Gordon arrives to the Nihilant Chamber and destroys the crystals that was keeping him alive but bound. He used his final strenght to transfer his being into the G man, having a lot less mass making his abilities stronger, strong enough to take on the combine. But it back fired. Instead of the combine being sent away, the combine hacked or tricked the nihilant to send combine troops to conquer Earth. So he tried to destroy Black Mesa hoping to destroy them in one swoop. It didnt work. The combine found the nihilant because he emits certain radiation print. Its still mate, so G man again go to Vortigaunts for help creating the ant lions against the combine. Since then The combine drain Earth resources in hopes of killing the head crabs and the antlions. Finally, hopeless, he brings Gordon in on the action as the Vortigaunts desire, hired him. The Vortigaunts steel Gordon and Alyx promoting them and thank you g man for a job well screwed
His brief case has plans for the whole mission since black mesa to hl3 release so it must happen sometime

This dude sounds like he belongs in the SCP-foundation
14:10: Good Warning... If it weren't for not however! I see that strangely described man everywhere when I --Teleport-- Transport over my summoning duties or even if I'm alone taking a break, which is worse!...
_What could he want from me?_
But now I know his one power nullification kryptonite and must smear some of that Vorti-whatever you call it and I'll be A-OK... Right?
Fun fact, half life 2 is set in 2023.. Gamers be ready...
It isn’t. According to public sources it should take place from 2020-2029 but they mostly say the seven hour war happened in 2021 and then when Gordon Freeman came it takes place in 2026 but maybe 2023 in my opinion.
Also Resonance Cascade, would make a cool sounding soft drink. Of course with a big 'λ' on it.
Something interesting I think about the world he brings you to when he has his monologues with you, I’m pretty sure those white streaks are photons, implying this is happening faster than light, probably instantaneously moving through space just to get a word in with you
OH GOD, I NEVER REALISED HOW BAD HE LOOKED IN THE HD PACK
SCP-189 the G-man
Object class: Eulcid
Containment procedures:
The G-man appears to take the form of a man in a blue suit holding a sliver briefcase. it is unknown what powers the G-man possess, other than teleportation. Because of this he is unable to be contained and has last been reported in northern Europe watching from very keen locations.
lol
NTF INCOMING
He's apollyon or safe (like scp 343) most likely
I'd say the class is Keter. If he has the ability to freely teleport to anywhere he likes, it would be impossible to contain him.
