  • Thirty years ago with brilliant Gilbert Price, and merely a glimpse of Eartha Kitt at the very end. Sorry about the video. Most of the audio still comes across with the voice of Mr. Price still ringing true!
Here are 2 incredible performers, though you'd never know by the terrible quality of the visual. From "Timbuktu," a beautiful broadway recreation, from 1977 of "Kismet." Wish the video matched the audio.
***Alert!*** I've been told in no uncertain terms that the performer known as Gilbert Price was actually Mr. Bruce Hubbard. I apologize for this error, and especially to the family or Mr. Price! These 2 performers had incredible voices, and I was duped into believing that the male performer was Mr. Price. I purchased a video stating that this was so. Were this and 2-3 other clips from this show not so dark, and grainy, I might have known. I apologize to all who've viewed this thinking it was true!. Personally, I think it's still lovely, and I'm not ashamed for thinking that Gilbert performed this piece! I think Mr. Hubbard and Mr. Price were the finest performers of their day!

I was there. In August 1978. That was when I was attending the University of New Haven as a music major. It was an awesome play. It was the night I also ran into Bernadette Stanis . She was FINE!!!!...took my breathe away. I had an opportunity to go on stage after and speak with Melba Moore. She was very gracious.

I was in this production of Timbuktu with Eartha Kitt.Gilbert Price did play the lead on Broadway of Mansa Musa and Bruce Hubbard was his understudy.Gilbert Price left the show and Bruce Hubbard took over the roll when we went on tour.In this video is Bruce Hubbard singing Night of my Night.I am playing with Congas in this song.

@varadero1839. Juan - Please do fix your caption up there then, OK? If this is not Gilbert’s voice… And it does sound indeed like this is Bruce’s - Bruce deserve the credit.
We all absolutely worship and adore Gilbert Price… Rest in such Esteemed Peace ! !! !!!
… But that is what you have to do. That’s showbiz!
I met Eartha Kitt in 2007, right before she passed away… Wow. What a Force she was! Honor and respect forevermore. ♥️ 👊🏽 ✌🏽

As a former cast member of both the original B'Way company and national tour of Timbuktu (I was the Evil Wazir), I can assure you the voice and person in this clip is the fabulous Bruce Hubbard (Gilbert Price's understudy on B'Way). I had the honor of working opposite both Gilbert and Bruce during my time with Timbuktu. Both voices were glorious and a joy to hear them sing. It's a tragedy that both my friends are no longer with us and sad and frustrating we didn't get to make a cast recording.

Just happen to read your comment. Alan is correct, the voice and person on this clip is Bruce Hubbard. This is a clip from the national tour of Timbuktu (I played opposite both Gilbert & Bruce as the Evil Wazir). I enjoyed working immensely with both Gilbert & Bruce and was in awe of their singing. Two great voices, and more importantly, two great human beings whom we lost much too soon.

Gilbert and Bruce both passed away in the same year (1991). Gilbert 48, Bruce just 39. I did Porgy and Bess with Bruce. He was such a gentle, sweet man, and extremely talented man.

@gabs2502 - TIMBUKTU was a revival (& revised version) of KISMET. The score was by Robert Forrest & George Wright, adapted from the music of Alexander Borodin. The music was still in print the last time I checked. Just search for it under the title KISMET, by Forrest & Wright. However, this arrangement is quite different from the one you'll hear on the original cast recording of KISMET with Richard Kiley in the role of the Caliph. Alfred Drake was the star of the original production.

I saw this production on Broadway. It was loaded with talent but the direction and choreography and costumes were so flamboyant that the charm of the original was lost.

Timbuktu is the African American version of Kismet. Find the score of Kismet (Wright & Forrest I believe) and you should be able to find the music. Also the beautiful "Stranger's in Paradise" is another great song from this show. Good luck.

Yep! THOUGHT those melodies and harmonies sounded familiar! Lol. 😏 Great show, though.
      - But that probably does partially explain why a cast recording was not done.

      Kind Edo Fox,
I'm happy to hear from you, and your kind comment. As time passes I'm not sure of much anymore. Whoever sang, either Mr. Price or Mr. Hubbard did a superb job in this production! You'll have to read some of the comments to understand my reply to you. I saw this show 2x, and I still can't commit to who sings the lead; the video is so bad! Edo Fox, I'm just honored that you'd write! Best wishes!
