Ep 34. 3 0r 4 Bladed Propellers for a Narrowboat.

  • I noticed, when the engine was hoisted in, I had 4 blades on the propeller. So, does it matter, 3 or 4 bladed propellers for Narrowboats? Doing this research has made a difference in my understanding of propellers. It's a very complex business, so I need to make it easy and get the basics right.

    Thanks for filming. Thanks for editing. Thanks for posting. It's been a slow burn but it's coming to life now. The prop stuff was interesting. Glad you couched it in layman's terms. Even I got it. Cheers Chris.

      That’s good to hear Trev. Great start the the comment by the way. It has been a slow burn, you’re right. Just under 40 weeks for the launch, hopefully. There are builders who do it quicker and I’m sure Mark will continue to tweak work performances. I have learnt a lot myself in this process, not only about the build but the boat business. I’ll probably drip feed a few things in to future vlogs. Another slow burn.

      I look back at that for guidance and unfortunately, it wasn’t one of my best but as you say, it sort of gets the message across. I never really knew what I was going to film when I went so it was very much off the cuff and learning as I went along. Janet and John works for me to understand it. Thanks Kath.

    Hi Chris, Sorry I'm late this week as I was away until yesterday. Great to see the engine go in and the nice shiny prop, I used 4 blade as it does help reduce fuel consumption but gives you power if you need it... I see you forgot to duck ! I knew you would at some point lol. Hope your All well. Very Best Wishes Old Skipper Tim :)

      Hi Tim. Engine’s in, and the 4 blade propeller which I must say was quite interesting to do a bit research on. The knock on my forehead was from the wheelie bin when the lid blew in the wind and caught the head - it fits the storyline though. At Crick yesterday, I found out the boat launch will the week of the 20th. Count down is on. Ground rush will be here soon. All’s well, thanks Tim.

      I've taken a tumble over the past few weeks as I don't want to succumb to the style of marketing that thumbnails request. Sensationalisation. It's all over the place from football headlines, to politics and now the Tube. I would rather this channel grow slower because people are interested in the content.
      That said, I like you title. I've changed mine just now to evoke something different. The hard core of subscribers have already watched it. I know there is another 1K that will over the coming week but, I just want to test a theory. Giving in. Thanks Ice. Your support and comments are appreciated.

    Nice education on propellers! When you started explaining diameter with "this distance here..." I was like, "oh no, that's the radius," and then you continued, "then you double it," you got me 😂

      @chrismears-inslowtime  Před 2 lety +1

      Radius and diameter was always an issue. To be honest, I knew the propeller was 18” and the measurements was 9”. Even for me, the sums didn’t work out, so it was a bit of cuffing on camera as to what diameter was. Thanks for the comment J T.

    Who would have thought there was so much technical thinking gone into a propeller....... As you say, antenna theory is a black art and as an amateur radio HAM and user of green radios for many years, I have been jiggered more than once, so forget prop maths. A great vlog Chris and its been a pleasure to follow this process from the beginning. Take care and looking forward to the next one. I believe we have discussed antenna theory or sorts before. I loved it. Pitting my mind against the conditions and types of antenna. Mostly I did well, but on those occasions that nothing happened, it was frustrating to say the least.
      Propeller theory: I would like to learn more and as time goes by and experience gained, I'll get the chance.
      Thanks for your support along the journey. A bit slow at times but, with about a month to go before I'm out on the 'cut'. Can't wait.
      Oh the colour. I can't believe people are looking for reflections on the side wall ! Funny. I like their tenacity. Keeping it a secret now means I can't film directly outside and I'll also need to be mindful of the inside too. The portholes and windows will give it away. May need to reveal sooner than later.

    Viewer #2 tonight.
    I've read somewhere that a 4-bladed prop will deliver smoother transmission of power, which apparently is one of the reasons a lot of ocean liners were designed with them.
    Regarding engine maintenance, I wonder if synthetic oil would get you more hours between servicing? It's more pricey, but fewer oil changes would likely be a saving. Maybe something to research after the engine is off warranty.
    There's nothing quite like a pristine engine bay.
    Suggestion for homey touches. If there is room for a couple of plants, make sure they are useful ones. An aloe vera is a great thing to have for cuts, burns, and any kind of skin irritation. A spider plant will do a good job of cleaning the air, and will survive just fine in low light. For the summer time, a pot of basil can add lots of flavour to whatever you're cooking. Or substitute any other kind of herb. Those can live outside, but don't usually overwinter well. Just a thought.
    Can't wait to see what colour was being applied on the outside.

    • @chrismears-inslowtime
      @chrismears-inslowtime  Před 2 lety

      You’re right Peter. Subs have more as it produces less noise and the bigger they are the less power is required to push the boat through the water. I’m sure it’s different now, but, that was for propeller designed boats.
      Don’t know on the oil, I’ll find out but, even if I keep to the suggested time table, I might on the first use synthetic oil.
      Great tips on the plant though. I wonder if they will be able to live in home made compost? Put that to good use. Thanks Peter.

    @tomdunn1254 Před 2 lety

    Hi Chris. Your 4-blade prop will give you more power (thrust) which will assist in maneuvering the boat in windy conditions. You can never have too much power- speed is not that important on a narrowboat.

    • @chrismears-inslowtime
      @chrismears-inslowtime  Před 2 lety +4

      Thanks Tom. Top advice. I’m going to try to inform better as I go on. Power doesn’t equal speed on a boat. It equals thrust and ability to manoeuvre. Speed equals wrong lifestyle.

    Neither acceleration or top speed are particularly critical when you are piloting a narrow boat in my limited experience, Chris. One further comment - the reflective insulation inside your boat's current residence may have given a clue to the paint colour. If I'm right, it looks to be a good choice.

    Ya shoulda gone with a super-old-skool "side-wheel paddle" set-up. Of course you'd probably have ducks & geese constantly clogging it up - and you wouldn't fit in most canals due to the extra width. On second thought it's a stupid idea. Don't listen to me - I'm an idiot. The engine looks complicated but you'll probably be swapping it out down the road for an electric one as the world moves away from fossil fuels. Keep vlogging - we're all emotionally-invested!

    • @chrismears-inslowtime
      @chrismears-inslowtime  Před 2 lety

      That side wheel paddle affair will need an army of people to manage and just think of the cancel culture I would have to endure. Steam power is very much in the history book era now. Shame. Even my diesel car is. 57 mpg as an average over 77 hours of travel. Not sure how many cars today can get that. I only use it for long journeys driving at 60, like Miss Daisy.
      Swapping the engine out for an electric. Won't be anytime soon. In fact I'm not sure if I could retro fit one. The canals need to move into the 21st century. All those who are going hybrid or full electric, will not be doing what I plan to do; Continuous cruising. If they do, they'll have a generator which will run on diesel. Ok it'll use less but, it's still not all that eco. I wonder if an all-electric boater will end up becoming a vlogger. It'll be interesting to get a true viewpoint. Not an Instagram life. That could change or influence CRT policy on eco-boats.
      Lots of boat stuff to talk about on the 'Cut'. Thanks Si.

    It’s always good to learn one new thing every day Chris and I didn’t know there was so much to think about for a prop on a narrow boat! • @chrismears-inslowtime
      @chrismears-inslowtime  Před 2 lety

      I’m not so sure many people know about propellers. I’m sure if they did, it would have been mentioned in detail by other vloggers before me. There is a lot of science and I covered propellers 101. There are terms such as cavitation and ventilation, but that would have made the video too in-depth. I may cover that on the cut.
      The big day. The plan is to go up the Erewash canal as a starter, to get used to the boat. A quiet canal, generally. Then, I’ll drive it down the Grand Union to the Smoke. I think that should offer me sufficient experience by the time I get there. Thereafter, the worlds my oyster, so long as it’s in the Uk ! Thanks Darren.

      Interesting point Adie. I’m probably going to stick to the guide. Trouble with vlogging, it catches you out if you don’t. I have some very switched on people who will expect me to keep to the schedule. They keep me on my toes for all the right reasons. There must be a reason in my mind too though mate. In todays world, unnecessary use of oil would be frowned upon. Also, 350 hrs for oil change. I was expecting 200 hrs, which is what I’ve heard from the Tube. That is a proper gift. • @chrismears-inslowtime
      @chrismears-inslowtime  Před 2 lety

      Great question Russell. Condensation is the biggest killer of a boat. The owner of The Fit Out Pontoon lives on a boat and has for a few decades. He realised condensation forms and then gets into the wood and all surfaces. You’ll notice all wood is melamine MDF and even the cut side has been edged and rounded so assist in water running off. So, if condensation forms and it’s not been noticed for a while, it’ll ‘pool’ and not get into the wood. More expensive, but the boat should look new in 20 years (or longer). Hope that answers it. Thanks for the comment.

      Hi another good vlog just thought I might say that know somebody has brought up using MDF you will probably get loads of comments from people that think this is a bad thing to use their best arguments are normally if it gets wet it falls to bits my answer to these people is if it gets wet enough to ruin it that means my boat is sitting on the bottom and I have more to worry about then a bit of wet MDF I have always used MDF for all my fit outs and never had a problem my present boat is now 16YRS old and all the wood work looks as good as when first fitted
