  • Hi, my name is Keishu, a Japanese calligrapher.
I'm specializing in Kana calligraphy style, which is quite distinguishable when compared to other Japanese calligraphy styles. It requires highly trained technique and skill, as well as a deep understanding of the aesthetics of spacing and positioning.
I'd like to show you how to write one of the Hyakunin-Isshu poetries in kana calligraphy style.
Hyakunin-Isshu is the traditional Japanese collection of one hundred poems by one hundred poets.
    花の色は (hana no iro wa)
    うつりにけりな (utsurinikeri na)
    いたづらに (itazura ni)
わが身世にふる (wa ga mi yo ni furu)
    ながめせしまに (nagame seshi ma ni)
    Colour of the flowers
    has faded
    in vain
my time has gone, while I was
gazing deep in thought, as long rains kept falling
    By Ono no Komachi (小野小町)
