In this video I share a powerful and pratical technique for recolouring any item in your images accurately to a target colour. Using Gradient Maps in Adobe Photoshop I recolour the make up, lipstick, nails, dress and background from a model shoot to a variety of colour options.

Just one thing that might help: when a colour is picked form a swatch, read the brightness value from the palette and match it with the "location percentage" in the gradient mask.
In this way you will get the exact colour.
Paolo Molinaro cool tip!
👊🏽
Also when picking the color from a swatch, it's better to change the "Sample size" from 'Point Sample' to some thing bigger like '11 by 11'
Thank you, sir.
Thank you!
If I may offer my advice (I’ve been a professional retoucher in NYC since 1999)- make a selection of whatever you need to select, and then make that a GROUP. Inside that group, add your gradient maps one by one- as opposed to having a different mask for each adjustment layer. This way, if you need to change the mask, you only have to do it once per selection instead of on each individual layer.
You can also nestle multiple groups within the main group- say, lips. Make one main group with the lips masked out, then inside that group make a layer or group for each color you need to match to.
It will save you lots of headache later, trust me!
Great video though. Well done.
I'm a Graphic Designer working with Watches photography for about 4 years and your explanation is absolutely right.
Thank you
Thanks my friend, but this obviously isn’t how i normally work. This was a basic tutorial and I wanted people to see the layers I’d created to understand where I was taking the selections from, but you’re right. That’s better file organisation.
Cool. Thanks for making and sharing!
YES!
Honestly the best tutorial on gradient map I've ever seen. Bravo!
tsts... you haven't met Unmesh yet...! XD
...don't get me wrong: I also appreciate and like Sean Tucker's videos a lot! Very nice guy
@@vi2e Not a fan of unmesh - he teaches really bad photoshop techniques...that are mostly quick but are absolutely terrible and unprofessional. When he talked about high end retouching and was using frequency seperation...thats when I couldn't take him seriously at all.
I honestly learn so much from your videos. You are one of the fews that I still follow through the years due to the fact that you stay humble, practical, uplifting, informative and nothing to do with web celebrity style. Wish I was not in Sweden but in London to go to some of your photo walks. Would be nice chatting with you in person. Once again, great job! Commend your wife for her great shots as well.
This video is gold, or silver, or platinum, because now I know how to make it any colour I want it to be! Thanks, Sean :-)
So much Thanks! So much helpful Sean! God bless you, your dear wife and all your dear ones!
Thanks so much. I been watching this tutorials several times already and still learning something new . Everytime
Very nice approach to adjust colours and tonality. Thank you so much for sharing.
Nice voice, on-point tutorials! Thank you very much!
I know, it's an older tutorial, but maybe I've got a little advice too:
When you're selecting a color with the eyedropper tool from a non-solid color like paint on skin it really can help to set the sample size in the upper-left corner to 5x5 or 10x10 to get the average color around the selected pixel - just to avoid selecting a pixel that's influenced by the noise of that image. :)
I'm not a photographer but, I enjoy your videos. There's always something positive and inspiring I take away from them. Thank you!
Sean, Another great video. I now have a much better understanding of the Gradient Map tool. Thx.
That's a really useful tutorial Sean, thanks' for your insights too.
Love that you took a step away from the usual type of video that you do. What I really can't wrap my head around is how you selected the dress from the first photo without getting the holes in it. You said to go look it up but with the way you explain everything I'd honestly love to see how you do it!
Same here ☝🏾
You go to the mask layer with a white brush and paint over the holes, where you want them to be. You can also correct yourself with switching between black and white brush (press "X" when in the mask layer) and paint the gradient back. You can also play with opacity. If you know that the dress is semi-transparent in some places, you can set the opacity of the brush as you wish.
When you use a tool like Quick Selection Brush, there's an option on the top panel that reads "Refine Selection". When you click on it, you can paint over your mask with a Refine Selection Brush, which automatically excludes background and holes from your selection. It's very useful when selecting hair, for example.
@@Loweren thanks so much as this is much-needed additional info! ;)

Fantastic video, Sean. Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge.
Very useful video Sean. I'm excited to put this to use. Thanks!!
Absolutely fantastic tutorial Sean. Thank you for making this.
That's a much more efficient way to recolor something! Until now I changed the value and hue + saturation with 2 layers. But I had no idea you could use a gradient map to do it all in one but also keep it flexible. Very nice one. I guess everytime you think you know all tricks in Ps, you learn a new one! 😄 I'll definitely use this new technique.
Thanks for putting in the work to deliver this long awaited tutorial, very much appreciated.
cheers 👍👍
Yes!!! This is really helpful. Thank you Sean for this tutorial.
I’ve been a regular Photoshop user for nearly 20 years and I learned loads from this video. Thanks, Sean.
Lovey. Didn't know this at all. So powerful. So simple. Thanks Sean.

This is one of the clearest and best tutorials I’ve seen for quite some time.
Thank you Sean, very much appreciate you
Brilliant tutorial. Clear, concise, and beautifully presented. Best instructional video on this subject I’ve ever seen. Thank you.
This is really cool! I used to use the Photoshop feature that appears when you open a RAW image because I thought that was pretty cool but I really like how much advanced control there is with the gradient map 🔋
Fantastic tutorial Sean, clear & to the point. Perfect, many thanks.
That is the clearest PS tutorial I’ve ever watched. Thanks Sean!
One of the best professional tutorials I ever watched. Thank You, Sir!
As has been said, this is the best gradient map tutorial I’ve seen. I will be using this in my work. Thanks you. 🙏🏼
I really enjoyed this video Sean! Using gradient maps is part of my color grading process, but this has shown another way to use them. Thanks!
Great explication, Sean. Thank you to share with us and thank to your wife to share the beautiful photos.

Thanks for a great video and a great tutorial, finding you channel out was really an amazing thing for me as someone who is starting with photography. Love every video you put out.
Such an amazing tip! I already used it for some basic stuff, but the results are amazing. I have a bunch of customized textures for my Instagram posts now. It was fast and easy and made my life so much easier. Thank you!
Thanks for sharing!! This will prove to be super useful.
So so useful especially as someone who was struggling with the realism of colour changes
Wonderful video. I can see that I am going to use this technique a lot. Thank you for taking the time to create such great content.
I knew PS could do this and I've done some gradient things but it's crazy to watch! I've heard people talking about becoming PS experts but I wonder if there is such a thing. Or do we just learn what we need to learn and only scratch the surface. Great video.
Thank you for the amazing videos! I learned so much from you! One of the best teachers - always well explained, very easy to follow, you helped me leveling up my photography and post editing skills!
Thanks Sean! I dont do much of modeling, but so useful to change the background ! and so easily explained. cheers
As usual, master class again! Thanks mate.
Great retouching tip and loved the unexpected touch of humor. ❤️
Hi Sean. Hope you're doing fantastic. I'm really an admirer of your work
This tutorial is so great. Thank you so much!
Great technique! Very practical. Thanks for sharing!
I probably have watched a thousand hours or more of photoshop tutorials, and my biggest problem area has always been color. This is the first video where it clicked about gradient maps and finally get it! You need the black and white in there, not just the color! Absolutely brilliant, thank you so much! Subscribing
LOVE your tutorials...miss the inspirational quotes...you are so good at that!!!
Priceless information! Thank you!

Great man > Thanks. well explained and added much more information on using Gradient Map.
I really appreciate this gradient map tutorial. Very easy to follow. I also watched 2 others - a one-light portrait & Sony/Canon compare (I own both). All 3 of these were very useful & presented in a non-intimidating manner. Thank you (I just shoot events, races & portraits part-time)
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. You couldn't have timed this better.
Excellent tutorial!! Thank you.
I am just learning photoshop and this is amazing - thanks for the great video.
