- Abendchor is a chamber choir, directed by Tom Trenney and Therees Hibbard, part of the Abendmusik:Lincoln series, based in Lincoln, Nebraska at First Plymouth church . This concert, entitled "Songs of Hope" was performed at First Plymouth Church, UCC, Lincoln, Nebraska on March 4, 2012. Video recording by Tammy Alvis.
This arrangement is taken from a larger work by British composer and pacifist Michael Tippett, "A Child for Our Time", written between the years 1938-1941. This work, in the style of an oratorio, was composed by Tippett in response to an incident used by the Nazi regime to justify a massacre of German Jews. Four well-known African-American spirituals are interspersed throughout the work. These spirituals reflect metaphorically the suffering of the Jews at the hands of the Nazis and draw parallels to the suffering and oppression of the African-American slaves while at the same time reflecting "Songs of Hope".

The best version of Steal Away I have come across so far. Beautifully blended choir and the soloists...just wow.

The soloists are especially good. Effortless. Not show-offy in anyway. Crisp. Clean.

Bravi. I sang these unaccompanied songs in a choral recording at Oxford years ago. Tippett was there. Your choir's singing and that of the soloists is beautiful. Just got in from a VERY long day at work and was looking for comfort music. Not that Tippett is comfortable, but I glowed with warm memory of Tippett's beautiful settings when I heard your choir. Thank you.

Have a listen at the recently uploaded recording of the St Paul's Cathedral Choir singing this in a concert. It's pretty amazing.
I am horrified that I cannot find this beautiful female soloist anywhere on the Internet!! I want to hear more of her! Does anyone know her name? Or the name of the choir at least?
Her voice takes me back to my childhood- singing along to Aurora's songs in Disney's 'Sleeping Beauty'. I never thought I'd hear a voice like that live or recorded again, I thought it impossible... and along comes this lady...! Please somebody find out her name!!

Whose voice is it?~ Yes, I agree hers is incredible~ absolutely magnificent!!! I replay this song whenever am at my lowest points!~ It's the best rendition I ever heard!~ It really does take me to Jesus. Very inspirational & humbling.
