The movie series has a beginning topos that it repeats -- Perry Mason doesn't want the case, but is asked "just talk to" the defendant.
The accused talks and acts like an innocent person, so Perry agrees to represent him.

We have an image of Perry Mason in our minds from the books, and the actor playing the part, does not fit that image a bit. Nor does Della Street.

Sub Hasish, the series of movies using the Perry Mason brand name grew out of the highly successful black-and-white television series of the 1960s, starring Raymond Burr.
The books were an okay success, but the TV series was a smashing success. Even the author, Earl Stanley Gardner, stated that "On TV, Raymond Burr IS Perry Mason."
The color movies, from 15 or 20 years later, with an obese Perry Mason, sometimes getting around on a cane, and a similarly obese Della Street, are the sequels, the effort to keep alive the cash cow, of the television, show, not an attempt to visualize the books.
