  • In a zero-g plane I experimented with flames and slinkies with surprising results.

The zero-g plane allows for a lot of experiments to be conducted without the expense of getting equipment into orbit. Apparently 80% of microgravity research can be performed in a zero-gravity plane, which is much cheaper than going to space. The flame from the lighter seemed much lazier in zero-g because without weight there is no buoyant force and therefore no convection. This makes the process of combustion more challenging because it's difficult for oxygen to reach the fuel.

1:36 - the man visible in the background, centre of image, is Jean-François Clervoy.
He has an oustanding career as a very experienced astronaut, with missions :
    - Atlantis STS-66
    - Atlantis STS-84
    - Mir / NASA-4
    - Discovery STS-103
He designed some of the STS cockpit displays, flight software, control interfaces... before acting similarly for the ISS. And also working on flight controls, satellites, automation systems, optical transmissions, man-machine interfaces, ATVs, etc.
He now stands as executive President of Novespace (the company operating those zero-G flights, subsidiary of the French CNES), after being their CEO for six years.
He is also parachutist, scuba-diver, plane pilot, university professor... enough said !

Because that´s what they are. Partly, it is about keeping that childlike curiosity and awed wonder, and then learning a rigid logical mental toolset to examine the world without your preconceptions and inuitions getting into the way. But, of course, you are still a human beeing with emotions and everything. So, while collecting viable data like a pro, you can watch grown up scientists giggle like 5-year olds being shown a magic trick. Its fun, and its addictive, but requires a lot of strenuous work to get there, and sometimes its draining. Kind of a faustian thing.

When I was a kid, I read a science fiction story where there was a saboteur aboard a space station. The saboteur was discovered as he was starting to divert liquid fuel into the part of the space station where people lived and worked. The fuel formed globs, and floated around. Before the people could stop him, he released a small rocket that spat out sparks. Some of the sparks hit some of the fuel globs. The globs flashed, but the flame went out. The explanation was, the combustion products were not carried away from the burning globs because in zero-g, there was no convection. So, the combustion products surrounded the globs, smothering the fire.
My 8th grade science teacher said that wouldn't happen.

For anyone wondering why the decreased gravity on the flame's byproducts doesn't make the flame higher: buoyancy decreases with gravity, I think. Buoyancy is equal to the weight of volume displaced, and the weight of cold air is smaller in zero G. The flame byproducts don't rise as fast or at all, keeping the flame small.

I sent Nasa an email. Time went and I forgot about it. About a 18 months later; I get a reply! From Nasa! My teenage mind was blown. Not only did they reply, they provided some graphics to explain, just like you did. Ended up using the entire story for a school projekt. Thank you for turning back time for a short while.
