using a 50mm lens for portraits is tricky. Although you have lots of light and can manipulate the depth of field to your liking the 50mm tends to distort the subject's face if you get too close. Be careful that you don't get too close or squared up on a face or you will add unflattering "weight" to your model's face.

marvelous tips on getting the proper lighting I normally meter on the nose but now I see where to do it now. I don't have to waste time in post processing as much. I agree too when shooting portraits it isn't always having the individual to look at the camera. The small details you brought up will be a great impact on future shooting now. Thank you.

I use canon R10 for my portrait shoot, A powerful entry level crop sensor mirrorless. I got myself an EF 50mm 1.8 and got both viltrox adapter and speed booster. This way I can use the lens both ways as a 50mm with speedbooster that gives an extra stop of light and as 80mm with the normal adapter.

Amazing video, I love that you are approaching photography from a creative, practical standpoint, and not from the typical "CZcams photographer" (aka. gearhead) standpoint. An average CZcams video would be to carry monolights and softboxes, or "use Eye-tracking" and things like those.

Great content that gets right to the point. A 50mm is a great 1st lens for portraits as it's versatile and works great for crop and full frame. There's alot of options to go to from their as you grow depending on the look that you like (I personally like the looks of an 85mm, 105mm, and 200mm on full frame for portraits). Anyways, keep of the good work. Your videos are enjoyable and informative.

Hi there Andrew I am enjoying your videos a lot I am new in photography and I still dont have a 50mm lense I own just the kit lenses, I will buy later a 50mm when there is some cash left out , in brazil my country, everything is so expensive, and sony lenses are the most expensive ones, you know. using a 50mm lens for portraits is tricky. Although you have lots of light and can manipulate the depth of field to your liking the 50mm tends to distort the subject's face if you get too close. Be careful that you don't get too close or squared up on a face or you will add unflattering "weight" to your model's face.

marvelous tips on getting the proper lighting I normally meter on the nose but now I see where to do it now. I don't have to waste time in post processing as much. I use canon R10 for my portrait shoot, A powerful entry level crop sensor mirrorless. I got myself an EF 50mm 1.8 and got both viltrox adapter and speed booster. This way I can use the lens both ways as a 50mm with speedbooster that gives an extra stop of light and as 80mm with the normal adapter.

Amazing video, I love that you are approaching photography from a creative, practical standpoint, and not from the typical "CZcams photographer" (aka. gearhead) standpoint. An average CZcams video would be to carry monolights and softboxes, or "use Eye-tracking" and things like those.

Great content that gets right to the point. A 50mm is a great 1st lens for portraits as it's versatile and works great for crop and full frame. There's alot of options to go to from their as you grow depending on the look that you like (I personally like the looks of an 85mm, 105mm, and 200mm on full frame for portraits). Anyways, keep of the good work. Your videos are enjoyable and informative.

The Nikon 50mm 1.4G can be a great lens if you get a good copy. You may have to try several versions before you find one, but they're amazing.

Hi there Andrew I am enjoying your videos a lot I am new in photography and I still dont have a 50mm lense I own just the kit lenses, I will buy later a 50mm when there is some cash left out , in brazil my country, everything is so expensive, and sony lenses are the most expensive ones, you know. But I want to thank you for these tips. I have subscribed in many CZcams channels related to photography and many are good but I have benefited the most from your channel for your straightforward and simple way of teaching.
