    Absolutely electrifying music - such inventive, emotionally precise, incredibly large and alive performance by such a spare orchestra with gorgeous singing, particularly that of Rolando Villazon, so well sustained, and how entertaining to see Emmanuelle Haim conducting with her swinging body while playing both harpsichord and organ ! The best Monteverdi ever, more expressively complex and subtle than the other Verdi, the one that's just green one without the mountain !

      Indeed. I've never quite been able to [believe] him before this. AND he is not-at-all exceptional in this regard: too many worthy singers are being forced to choose between livelihood or life--coerced by cash to sing shit (1) that does not fit their voice, (2) that does not SERVE their capability, (3) that ain't currying no interest or favor--anyway--outside a few ignorant donors & fearful fundraisers...

    This is a true masterpiece. I wonder how Monteverdi could compose such a marvelous work of art which sounds incredibly modern after almost 400 years. And the singers perform with such commitment that more than compensates for the lack of prebaroque style.

    With this work Monteverdi perfects the Baroque orchestra of the time, which already sounds with many effects like pzzicatos, stacato, accelerating, ritardando and tremolos. In addition, it uses an instrumental combination for each moment of the drama.

    What an inspired choice of an operatic tenor for the narrator. Finally an interpretation full of the passion that I believe is in Monteverdi’s music but is so often treated with kid cloves. Fab!

    • @marinamalia
      @marinamalia Před 4 lety +1

      That's exacly what I don't like. The narrator is just that: a narrator (like the poet, Torquato Tasso, is). In my opinion he must not feel or express any passion. The passion is in the music. I don't think Monteverdi would recongnize his work in this verismo-like performance.

    • @10felix
      @10felix Před 4 lety

      @@marinamalia Tout à fait d'accord avec vous ! La prestation de Villazon est un contre-sens. Il faut un peu plus de sensibilité et de finesse pour ce rôle. Patrizia Ciofi (Clorinda) est aussi complètement à côté de la question. Cette interprétation est une vraie catastrophe !

    Il Galoppo cadenzato e corto dell equitazione Classica , scandito dal tempo...e l incedere sempre più grave e premonitore di morte. E la richiesta "Cortese " di avere l onore di conoscere il cavaliere cui si darà morte. Da brividi. Magnifica la voce vibrante di pathos. Che dire di più. La più BELLA interpretazione mai udita.... Pare gli abbia tolto tutta la polvere per rendercela di nuovo ViVA E SCINTILLANTE DEI GUIZZI E SCINTILLE DELLE SPADE. Tremenda la scoperta, che Guinge , assieme allo sfinimento . Forse qua la voce dovrebbe tenerne conto ed essere meno potente e meno vibrante. Per non distrarre dal dialogo serrato. Non amo invece la voce di Clorinda.

    Une “dramaturgie
    de choc. A commencer par le récitatif du Récitant (ou Testo), débité d’un
    ton naturel, ennemi de l’emphase, mais qui est gagné par la mobilité du style
    concitato pour s’exalter furieusement, à l’évocation des phases cruciales du
    combat ou, en revanche, s’infléchir dans les séquences méditatives, ou
    lorsque l’émotion et la douleur brisent le mouvement mélodique de la
    musique… “. Roger Tellart

      She sticks out like a sore thumb for me. There is far too much wobble in her voice.
      Villazon is the true revelation. I would never have thought him as a natural singer for this repertoire but he excels. His lower register is shown off to great effect. It is very dark and well suited to the piece. Tenors should be prized for their full range, not just the more heroic upper octave.
