My birthmother named me after this song. Sadly, it is SHE that will be waiting at the gates of heaven for me.. her son...TERRY! I was taken from her when i was only 4 months old. Thanks mum for having me, though you were struggling as a teenage mother.
Grown up listening to Twinkle, due to Twinkle and my Nan being best friends through school and some of her career, but unfortunately went seperate ways. Would have loved to of met her. So sad about her passing.
I was also born in 1964, I found this song 10 years ago and I can't think of anything more apt !!! My 18 year old son called Terry, died in a motorbike accident , the words oh me when I first heard it I just couldn't believe it 😢
If my information is right Twinkle sang this live in front of all those thousands of people and she was only 15 years old (she was 3 months off her 16th birthday!).
Is it my immagination or was this lady 20+ years ahead of her time, this performance would not have been out of place in the early 1980s and sounds fresh even to this day
Saw her performing in my local town in about 1964. A lot of people, including myself, were very disappointed with her live performance, but I have always loved the words of this song
Well no shit listen to the song shes allover the place I totally get that wasent as much of an issue then, people didnt expect robotically perfect voice and audio lol But shes obviously not gonna be great live if shes not in recording
It's so weird my mom is called Lynn and my dad is called Terry who passed away in 2011 rip dad I know you will be at the gates of heaven for Mam 😭 when it's her time
This a rather hard-to-find teen tragedy song -- haven't heard it since early 1964. Nice to have a video of Twinkle singing this song. Thanks for posting it, Tabbap!
Twinkle, whose real name was Lynn Annette Ripley, was the only UK female singer of her generation to write her own material and here daunting debut single was recorded by Twinkle at the age of 16. It went Top 5, but a follow-up stalled at #21, after which Twinkle's star faded.
The obit says that she was inspired to write this while being driven down the A3 in the back of her parents' limo, and seeing the bikers. Apparently Jimmy Page played on the record.
I SAW TWINKLE PERFORM THIS SONG IN MY HOMETOWN CORK CITY IRELAND 🇮🇪 IN THE SAVOY CINEMA CUM THEATRE IN 1965 SHE WAS A SUPPORTING ACT TO THE ROLLING STONES THE OTHER SUPPORTING ACT WAS THE BANSHEES BAND FROM BELFAST NORTHERN IRELAND A FANTASTIC WONDERFUL SPECIAL HAPPY GOLDEN MEMORY FOR ME 👍🏻💯❤
I believe she was introduced to Decca records producer Phil Solomon by her boyfriend - Dec McCuskey of the Bachelors, yes a bit of a surprise ?, that was kept quite as he was 20 and she was only 15, she came from a well to do family and went to private schools, I believe as soon as the BBC banned the song it shot straight to #3 in the charts, help by pirate radio stations I think she is still the youngest female singer to have also written a song that got into the UK top 5.
This song was the a side of twinkle 45 that I had as a biy and I used to sing this and the boy of my dreams on the b side these two songs how iwish they I had known how they would have helped to influence my gender and life so many times I thought when I realised that I had found the right partner but it went wrong from 12 to about 21 after the last girlfriend i after talking to quite a few different people realised that i was gay and my future would be with a man that was the best thing that happened to me i came down to earth and was grounded by my arthur who died in 2010 now on my own but happy
Tragically boys and men are still at higher risk of suicide than women. A wonderful 21yr old in my stepmum's family died by his own hand...and it is something one never forgets or really gets over. Gloomy Sunday was banned too in the same era, according to stepmum.
My mum ,a original modett from Chelsea in the 60s tolded me this song was banned from the radio, cus people were killing themsleves over it ,yet it’s such a beautiful song and wasn’t Jimmy Paige (led zeppelin) playing guitar?
I accept I will probably get crucified for this, but it is only an observation and in no way meant to be rude to two Top Class Entertainers. Does any one else think that BRIAN CONNOLLY of the SWEET looked very similar to her, hair style etc, There is also a bit right at the beginning of this when she stars to sing..she smiles rather nervously, BRIAN does the same right at the beginning of one of the WIG WAM BAM videos Just an observation
A Luvly Girl Sadly missed Im curious in the backing group. the guitarist nearest her, the one wearing spectacles, does any one know what make/model guitar he is playing ? Also a strange high up playing position.
My birthmother named me after this song. Sadly, it is SHE that will be waiting at the gates of heaven for me.. her son...TERRY! I was taken from her when i was only 4 months old. Thanks mum for having me, though you were struggling as a teenage mother.
Sadly, this sort of thing is still happening, called forced adoption. Hope you are reunited with her when the time is right.
The first record that I ever bought and it remains with me at the age of 67. Just fabulous story, melody and performance. music as it should be.
I am 67 years of age, Music brill. Fashion BRILL. May her FAME continue.
@@georgebelfield7802 I’m afraid Lynn Ripley died 21 May 2015 (aged 66)
This old version is really bad, Listen to it on the next link, the one with a coloured photo of Twinkle....much more tuneful. Xxx
My brother is Terry and I hope he will be waiting for me. For ever 29 😢
A terrific death-rock classic.
Grown up listening to Twinkle, due to Twinkle and my Nan being best friends through school and some of her career, but unfortunately went seperate ways. Would have loved to of met her. So sad about her passing.
A strange and ethereal place and time.
Not even quite the same dimension as we currently reside in.
I loved this when it first came out I still love it now . Sorry to hear she passed away RIP Twinkle.
My Father was called Terry I was born in 1964 he died 3 months later. This song must have been heartbreaking for my mother to hear❤🌹🙏🏻💫
Very sad ❤❤❤ xx
My goodness, what an incredible, sad story!!😨
I'm so sorry to hear that, but being a child I could never understand why it was banned
Hi was named terry after this one
I was also born in 1964, I found this song 10 years ago and I can't think of anything more apt !!! My 18 year old son called Terry, died in a motorbike accident , the words oh me when I first heard it I just couldn't believe it 😢
still remember this tear jerker from my teens!!
So sad to hear of Lynn's passing. I'm sure Terry was waiting at the Gate of Heaven for her. R.I.P. lovely lady
What an impact she had on my teenage life....she wrote this song too was the first record I bought and still sounds great today
RIP Lynn Ripley AKA Twinkle, remember this from 60s as she was such a looker when you saw her on TV singing this song.
A haunting song you never forget
One of the greats❤
I heard this song on the radio today. First time I had ever heard it!
She was a fantastic raw talent. She desperately needed a singing coach and a good manager.
I wonder if she influenced Kirsty MacColl?
Its a great song and I loved it when it came out and its still one of my favourite from all those years ago
Terry. Twinkle. 1964. What a great Song !
If my information is right Twinkle sang this live in front of all those thousands of people and she was only 15 years old (she was 3 months off her 16th birthday!).
RIP Twinkle, thank you for the wonderful memories
Beautiful song
Is it my immagination or was this lady 20+ years ahead of her time, this performance would not have been out of place in the early 1980s and sounds fresh even to this day
It was definitely 60's
Yes, definitely your imagination. 🥴
It's a long time since i heard this. Still sounds great
Agreed.
this lady was so far ahead of her time I cant believe it! about 40 years ahead of her time.
“One day he’ll know how much I prayed for him to live”
Beautiful lyrics and very touching
always makes me wanna cry wen i hear this wonderful song
Found out this song existed this week. Absolute banger.
What a talented singer ,songwriter always stays just a great as when you first hear it.
Saw her performing in my local town in about 1964. A lot of people, including myself, were very disappointed with her live performance, but I have always loved the words of this song
Well no shit listen to the song shes allover the place
I totally get that wasent as much of an issue then, people didnt expect robotically perfect voice and audio lol
But shes obviously not gonna be great live if shes not in recording
Sometimes a vocal performance doesn’t have to be perfect to be perfect.
It's so weird my mom is called Lynn and my dad is called Terry who passed away in 2011 rip dad
I know you will be at the gates of heaven for Mam 😭 when it's her time
This song always reminds me of the Smiths' There Is a Light That Never Goes Out.
This a rather hard-to-find teen tragedy song -- haven't heard it since early 1964. Nice to have a video of Twinkle singing this song. Thanks for posting it, Tabbap!
I was 14 when this came out and my friends and I thought it was fabulous! In a macabre kind of way . . . we teeny boppers loved it.
One Brilliant, Ballad! To bad she has gone!

It went Top 5, but a follow-up stalled at #21, after which Twinkle's star faded.
Her niece is actress Fay Ripley.
Poor management and poor promotion.
RIP Twinkle xxx
Terry Emerson, NZS not forgotten 1947-83.
So very 1960s she had a beautiful voice RiP Twinkle
this was my best mate favourite song when we were kids in the sixties, and yes his name was dave
Terry was my first love, this song makes me cry when I hear it😢
The obit says that she was inspired to write this while being driven down the A3 in the back of her parents' limo, and seeing the bikers. Apparently Jimmy Page played on the record.

It is just so strange that somebody as talented as Lynn Annette Ripley twinkle did not become world-famous
This was the pop era!
❤I love this 🎵 listen to it as a child ❤
Castleford 1964, loved this song, going out with Rita cobb
I believe she was introduced to Decca records producer Phil Solomon by her boyfriend - Dec McCuskey of the Bachelors, yes a bit of a surprise ?, that was kept quite as he was 20 and she was only 15, she came from a well to do family and went to private schools, I believe as soon as the BBC banned the song it shot straight to #3 in the charts, help by pirate radio stations I think she is still the youngest female singer to have also written a song that got into the UK top 5.
It was not to late for me by discovering this fav. song..thx for posting
Lovely song I was named after it but glad I am
This song was the a side of twinkle 45 that I had as a biy and I used to sing this and the boy of my dreams on the b side these two songs how iwish they I had known how they would have helped to influence my gender and life so many times I thought when I realised that I had found the right partner but it went wrong from 12 to about 21 after the last girlfriend i after talking to quite a few different people realised that i was gay and my future would be with a man that was the best thing that happened to me i came down to earth and was grounded by my arthur who died in 2010 now on my own but happy

MERCI JE M APPELLE TERRY MAGNIFIQUE PRENOM ANGLOPHONE QUE J ADORE
this was one of the records that got banned for awhile but it was still on juke box at squires coffee bar sherburn yorkshire
Brilliant track
Her backing group for live gigs was The Gonks (the UK version). Is this them? They definitely backed her in early 1965.
top 20 of saturday 19 december 1964
At one stage The BBC banned teen death songs on the basis they might influence suicides. Boys aged 15 to 24 were at high risk.
Tragically boys and men are still at higher risk of suicide than women. A wonderful 21yr old in my stepmum's family died by his own hand...and it is something one never forgets or really gets over.
Gloomy Sunday was banned too in the same era, according to stepmum.
They still are at high risk.
Love this song my name is Terry
Golden lights is one of my favourite, she was sadly exploited by bad mangerment
Merci ch b a ses debuts merci
RIP a other of the sixties gone.
Apparently Twinkle, was the one time girlfriend of the guy in the Bachelors! Another popular vocal group of the times.
Rosemary Davies Think it was the guy from the Bachelors who helped her get started in pop and get a record contract.
There were three guys in the Bachelors! You mean Dec Clusky.
daddy's beloved darling
💔
great song even better
than the Leader Of The Pack more authentic for bikers and it's British
no song is better than LOTP
My mum ,a original modett from Chelsea in the 60s tolded me this song was banned from the radio, cus people were killing themsleves over it ,yet it’s such a beautiful song and wasn’t Jimmy Paige (led zeppelin) playing guitar?
Yes, I read Jimmy Paige played on this album.
She was only 16ys when she. Wrote this song
Stretched out video makes her look dumpy - which she most certainly was not - she was a stunner!
I think she was the greatest
IT WAS STILL IN BINNIES CAFE IN BARNSTAPLE
your right
It was banned on the BBC
It just occurred to me that it may not have been the the the the conservative dress of 1964 but rather it may have been cold weather
I had a crush on a boy called terry i was 11 years old lol
This is basically a Magnetic Fields song
Who else is here after watching Save Me?
she died, i dont know, what happened. so sad.
*-MORRISSEY-*
Needs converting to original 4:3 ratio.
I accept I will probably get crucified for this, but it is only an observation and in no way meant to be rude to two Top Class Entertainers.
Does any one else think that BRIAN CONNOLLY of the SWEET looked very similar to her, hair style etc,
There is also a bit right at the beginning of this when she stars to sing..she smiles rather nervously, BRIAN does the same right at the beginning of one of the WIG WAM BAM videos

A Luvly Girl
Sadly missed
Im curious in the backing group. the guitarist nearest her, the one wearing spectacles, does any one know what make/model guitar he is playing ?
Also a strange high up playing position.
I LOVE YOU twinkle
How many people have done this
Interesting; I remember hearing this on the radio once when I was a kid. Whatever happened to her, and is Twinkle her real name?!
Her name is Lynn Ripley, she's still around now and is the auntie of well known English actress Fay Ripley.
She died a couple years ago.. :(
Whatever happened to Johnsons Cafe and The Beachcomber?
It seems an eternity ago - hang on, it is!
