Most likely the case, as the biggest battery in a Samsung watch previously was Galaxy Watch 5 Pro at 590mAh (which I've been loving for a while now and shall continue to use). Ultra also has many more features than previous models, and it's obvious they're gunning to be the Apple Watch Ultra for Android. It's also replacing the 'classic' and 'pro' lines so they needed to make a huge evolution like this.

Even though it wasn't made for that Apple started making watch faces for it. So that's how that started. So, when rumors started circulating that Apple was working on an actual watch guess what? Samsung started rushing to make their own to beat Apple which they did. But, it was poorly designed and resembled the square design of the iPod Nano. A yr later or so the Apple Watch was released which was much better cause Apple was working on it longer not rushing to be first. Just like a lot of other products /designs companies rush with their half baked products to beat Apple to claim they were first, they re so innovative and Apple is following /copying them which wasn't the case.
The Gear Sport was my first smartwatch, and it's still my favorite one that I've ever owned. ❤ (Sadly I don't have it anymore, but it would be rather outdated now, anyway.) When I tell you I was PSYCHED to see that cushion case return!! 😍
I'm perfectly fine with the square body. People forget Samsung was making square phones way before apple. I actually think this is the best looking Samsung watch yet and I think the square body gave a lot of options for the updated goodies like the battery. IMO
This kind of watch case is well known in watch industry and it is called cushion design. In my opinion it looks stylish and different from the competition. But of course beauty is in the eye of beholder.

I’m currently using Apple products: iPhone 12 Pro Max, watch ultra, air pods 2 pro, etc. now it’s time to switch sides; I alternate between Apple and Samsung every 4-5 years and was using a Note 9 before. I preordered unlocked 1TB Fold 6, Samsung watch ultra, air buds pro 3, warranty, and some accessories. Cant wait to try them out.
I go back and forth. My last was a note 9 and before that was a iPhone 7S plus. My server at home handles my files, photos, surveillance camera feeds, notes, etc. It has 120 TB and 3GB internet speed up and down so I don’t need to subscribe to cloud services. Switching is easy.
The design looks so awesome. A watch band is a watch band. Just use a pair of sissors to trim excess off no big deal. Rotating bezel doesn't make sense for a Ultra rugged watch thats going into so many different environments like salt water, sand, mud , etc.
They could've easily made that middle button a rotating crown , looking forward to a "real honest" in depth test of the new sensors,gps , notifications, phonecalls etc....
The design is refreshing, like the square face (luckily not rectangle), if not will have kept my watch 5 pro. Traded watch 5 pro for Orange one & Buds 3 pro Silver. Can't wait to get them. Great video 👍
I know this is out of topic but... About the watch 4, I have a few doubts. 1. Can I connect the watch to a Samsung tablet? 2. In the Bluetooth version, can I use the browser only by connecting to a wifi and not to the phone?
About the compass....are you sure you didn't have the watch near a magnet? Like a phone case, iPhone, or camera mount? I used to have a magnetic phone case and it would mess up the read if it was anywhere near my garmin.

The band is not supported to match your clothing lol it supported to stand out... look at this big boy I agree. The round watch on the square base is a bit daft. Still, it looks awesome and futuristic
I like the circle face on the square body as the square body does not dig into your wrist/hand when you flex your hand palm out for various tasks as much.
When I'm on my bike, or driving, I use my palm to rotate the bezels for phone calls and alarms because I can't look down paying attention to what I'm doing. I can't just twist my wrist and point my other finger and look where my finger is going to navigate the screen use that. So it will still be an issue.
Strap adapters are available on Amazon. Neither my Ultra or adapters have arrived yet so no telling how well they work, but there is hope of using all the 20mm bands I have with it.
I think the square body gives it a unique look but at the same time the extra square body protects the main screen. Either way, it’s great for those who like it.
Also...not compatible with other version chargers and reportedly can't use wireless charge sharing from phone. They evidently moved coils further into watch for sensors.
The orange reminds me of the original Omega Planet Ocean watches. Extra band size could be geared toward wet suit wear or wearing over long sleeves, cuffs with gloves on....etc....hence outdoor watch.

the squircle design is not new. they've done it before on the 2017 gear and the design has existed long before in conventional watch design. Samsung adopted it in here to be able to fit their bigger sensors.
I just ordered mine - and subsequently found out that the new Watch 7 series does NOT support reverse charging from the phone (S24 Ultra) and they highly recommend only to use the original charging puck and not the older pucks from like Watch 6 Classic (which I'm trading in) - due to heating issues - Not sure if this is really an upgrade ?!? but I got an amazing deal which was hard to pass up . . . we'll see when I get it in my hands Great video as usual!! 👍
I also ordered the silver one and trading my classic 6 but I'm like so close to canceling cause of the Ultra not having reverse charging...do you think the battery will be good enough to not worry about not charging with the fold or ultra?
I think the square body is for the increase in battery. Not sure how big of a round watch it would take to match the battery size. As for the round Face, I’d say it’s based on the code / existing UI is all round. Too much effort now to go all in on square.
Im sure the bigger square body is to house more hardware and kept the circle screen simply cause they have not optimized their os to work well on a square screen yet.
Less than two days of battery is "rugged" lol. Garmin giggled. Currently my Epix is at 85% battery and has 27 days remaining before needing a charge. I'll be at Whistler next week and I still don't have to think about charging.
I would assume the square body design also allows for a bigger battery (in comparison to Watch 7). I do prefer round watches. The rotating bezel on my old galaxy watch still feels very good, and I would love to have that too. But let's see - I ordered one. Regarding the bands - there seem to be a adapter available on amazon that allows to use those 22mm standard bands. I ordered one of that as I always use a metal mesh band fitting my wrist size (i would rather need XL 😂)
I hate the rotating bezel, the 6 I had before the ultra I have now got stuck, I'd bump it on stuff and it would rotate. Im glad the didn't put it on this watch.

A rotating bezel is a moving part that would compromise that rugged nature of the watch . How is that so hard to understand ? I never use the one on the 6 classic . it's easier to swipe the screen . That's why i traded mine in for the ultra. The new design is much better

It’s amusing how most CZcamsrs fixate on the shape of this watch. Circle in square case, circle in cushion-shaped case, weird, bla bla bla . Yet, if you look at regular, real watches, there’s a plethora of different case shapes housing circular dials. Take Audemars Piguet, for instance - their iconic Royal Oak is breathtaking. It’s octagonal, yet still captivating. And then there are brands like Bvlgari, Patek Philippe, etc. There are thousands of cool-looking watches with non-round cases and circular dials. Just some food for thought!
as a long time samsung customer I have to say at the least this is a very ho hum design, and personally, the round face and square case is really inelegant and weird looking. It looks like a toy.
i like the samsung watches desiigns because they look minimalist and clean. this one is definitly not aimed toward me, i'd pick the regular galaxy watch over it, even if they came in the same price and the ultra had a feature i really wanted.
Seeing the watch in pictures was not very impressed, but now that I've seen it in person love the cushion caseq design very reminiscent of Panerai dive watches.

Wireless sharing is now a thing of the past. I never found that it worked well.

Amazon sells the adapter for it so you can still use your mm or 22mm bands

Regarding the bands - there seem to be a adapter available on amazon that allows to use those 22mm standard bands. I ordered one of that as I always use a metal mesh band fitting my wrist size (i would rather need XL 😂)
For $224 I just went with the Ultra and gave up my watch5 pro.
I hate the rotating bezel, the 6 I had before the ultra I have now got stuck, I'd bump it on stuff and it would rotate. Im glad the didn't put it on this watch.
They are already many OEM bands and cases that work with the watch.

I cannot wait to get my ultra. I think it looks great and Samsung gave me $ 400 for my trade.
I prefer round design with mechanical bezel (best way to interact).
It would be interesting to know how durable the watch case is? Although it is titanium, how easy is it to scratch the finish? Also what about the watch glass

I don't understand why people are surprised about the square and round watch when years ago they made the galaxy watch sport which is pretty much the same design when it comes to the square body.
A rotating bezel is a moving part that would compromise that rugged nature of the watch . How is that so hard to understand ? I never use the one on the 6 classic . it's easier to swipe the screen . That's why i traded mine in for the ultra. The new design is much better

I may be the only person that uses their watch as a music player. Is that huge speaker grill for looks or is it any more powerful than the watch 6 classic?
It’s amusing how most CZcamsrs fixate on the shape of this watch. Circle in square case, circle in cushion-shaped case, weird, bla bla bla . Yet, if you look at regular, real watches, there’s a plethora of different case shapes housing circular dials. Take Audemars Piguet, for instance - their iconic Royal Oak is breathtaking. It’s octagonal, yet still captivating. And then there are brands like Bvlgari, Patek Philippe, etc. There are thousands of cool-looking watches with non-round cases and circular dials. Just some food for thought!
Anyone made a call on this? I'm coming from the original galaxy, curious if quality has improved
Trust me bro the strap is perfect. It's so hard for big guys like me to find a watch that has a long enough band to wear loosely and tightly.
More volume in the watch for a bigger battery, that's why it's squared off.
The shape is an oversized Gear Sport with that squircle
They sell adapters on amazon that are attached by the lug size, but the other end has the pin style like the older watch models .
as a long time samsung customer I have to say at the least this is a very ho hum design, and personally, the round face and square case is really inelegant and weird looking. It looks like a toy.

i like the samsung watches desiigns because they look minimalist and clean.
this one is definitly not aimed toward me, i'd pick the regular galaxy watch over it, even if they came in the same price and the ultra had a feature i really wanted.
How is the ultra different in functionality from the standard watch 7 ? Is the OS and options the same?
Seeing the watch in pictures was not very impressed, but now that I've seen it in person love the cushion caseq design very reminiscent of Panerai dive watches.
Do you think the crown can scroll in a future update?
