My uncle worked for Bell Labs and he was the primary inventory for TT. When we went to the World's Fair with him in NY, we were always dragged to the post show so he could show off the phones
$1.75 a month for touch tone?! Lease a touch tone phone?! Lol. … Now that I think about it, I guess my parents did pay a monthly fee for caller ID back in the day. The phone company was good at nickel and diming you.
@Richard Conte Interesting! I'm surprised that someone didn't invent a "Free Touch Tone Phone" that just sent a pulse signal instead of tones. "Avoid Bell's subscription fees with the all new touch-o-matic!"
@@f.k.b.16 Interesting thing is when I bought my first phone in the '80s it had a switch on it that said tone or pulse. The phone did have a touch tone but if you switched to pulse every time you press the number, you'd hear a little pulse in the background as if it was dialing for you
@@KevRalph I have a phone somewhere in one of my closets that does that. Even in the 1980's there was still switching equipment that didn't accept touch tone, along with others who didn't want to pay extra but wanted push buttons. Dial pulse phones were the answer.
@@f.k.b.16Conveniently, in 1985 right after AT&T broke up the Bely System into 7 different companies, they discontinued the rotary dial version of the Trimline phone and updated the touch tone version with a pulse/tone switch. Guessing since they no longer owner the Bell system, there was no longer any way for them to charge a monthly fee for touch tone dialling, so they just build the feature into their phones and screwed over the now divested Bell system and their touch tone fees.

It was a nightmare to send a SMS with a rotary phone!
It’s a technique in the hands, and patience…lightweight!
😂😂😂
I have a rotary phone in 2020 it works and I don’t mind the rotary I mean yeah touch tone is quicker but I don’t mind rotating my finger
Wait how do you have pulse dialing service that would be really awesome
@@jebidiahkerman4600 We have fibre optic services but it’s still compatible with pulse dialing.
Keep the rotary phone. You get more exercise dialing. It's much better for your cardiovascular health.
@@jebidiahkerman4600get yourself a DialGizmo or RotaTone device to convert the signal.
I have two rotary phones that I use in mid-2023!
I need one of those! I hope it works with my answering machine.
I'm still turning a crank on the side of my wall phone to reach the operator. Is it too late for me to upgrade to this newfangled touch tone service?

I'm kind of skeptical of this new technology. I'm still happy with my carrier pigeons.
Them newfangled crank telephones aren't too good either.
I have a rotary telephone my house but I really wanna push button telephone
Where is it?
Birmingham Alabama 1985 for South Central Bell Telephone Company
I don’t mind the rotary
You had to pay for touch tone? It came out in the 60s... No wonder people didn't care.

She said 1.75$ a month. Did they stop charging for touch tone at some point in time?
I couldn't tell you, I haven't had a land line since 2008.
They did. Nobody did win, since whatever the standard rates are were higher to compensate.
Some telephone companies still charge a very small amount (we are talking mere cents here) in the modern day and age for touch tone service.
My parents never got any services other than basic, touch tone became standard here in Miami around 1998.
