  • We review the heavily updated Hyundai Santa Fe, to show just exactly how they knocked this one out of the park. Now the fences may only be 200 feet, there is no doubt this is a comfortable cruiser with so many features. Will it best SUVs like the Honda CRV, Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX5, or Ford Explorer?

I didn’t have a great experience with Hyundai sales or management team, caught them hiding my trade in saying it was shipped off to God knows where, I was pissed. But I did negotiate a great deal on a new Santa Fe after I called them out and I’m super happy with the Hyundai. It’s my 3rd one in the 9 years I’ve been driving. I also have had some older Mazda hand me downs. But none of my Hyundai’s have had any issues and unlike the crappy sales side, the service side has absolutely been fantastic to us! I always get a nice loaner when I call to schedule service. They really take care of everything and exceed my basic expectations. Of course all the manufacturers are pushing near perfect CSI survey scores the last 10 years or so since I was 16. I’m always getting emailed surveys.

I wanted to like it when my wife and I went to look at one. It's weird enough on the outside to appeal to me. It's got plenty of power and gobs of room on the inside. But there were two things that ultimately turned me off to it, and sadly, neither of them had to do with the car I believe. The first is during the test drive, I didn't get to test drive it, at all. The most obnoxious, lead-footed sales guy took us out for a 3 mile roller coaster ride, all the while shouting obscenities about the other car dealerships he'd worked for in the past, and how this was so much better. When we got back to the dealership, we were coerced into a sales office and blocked off between our sales guy, the sales manager, and some other little hype man in a dealership polo for 45 minutes while we both furiously tried to explain how we weren't looking to purchase right that second, as we had two more cars to look at. Normally I can use my 6'3", 260lb frame to clear a path, but the sales guy was bigger. Once we did make it back out to our car, my back was killing me, and I can't decide if it was because the seats in the Santa Fe lacked the support in general, or they just couldn't handle the joyride we'd been taken on.
Unfortunately, with that being the only Hyundai dealer in the area, I'm not going back to give it another try. I want to like it, but both Hyundai and Kia dealerships are still the reason I can't enjoy the Santa Fe, the new Tucson redesign, or the Stinger GT.

Assuming you have the cash flow and the right management, I think it's easier for a new car company to improve fast and compete with established brands than it is for an established brand to remain good.
This is just my guess and it may be a stretch but here's how it goes imho: the up and coming brand has an incentive to produce good stuff at a lower price if possible because it's got a reputation to build and marketshare to grab. They don't need to reinvent the wheel, instead just implement the best practices in the industry (ie. be like Toyota, don't be like Nissan) which is why they had actual automatic transmission instead of CVT like Nissan for a long time. In the case of Hyundai, it also helps that they're a metallurgy company too, sourcing most of the metal and high strength steel in-house, a competitive advantage so more money can go to development to do better or catch up to others.
Compare that to established brands like GM and its subbrands, or Ford. The pressure is high to cut as many corners as possible because they already were established as big players decades before Hyundai even came to existence. The focus is pleasing shareholders, not building an image for reliability.
Last but not least, Korean businesses are simply going after the market share of the Japanese, trying to replicate the Japanese business models that have worked. And it's working wonders for them. Today's Hyundais and Kias go toe to toe with the likes of Honda/Toyota. Samsung/LG all but dominate the home appliances and tech etc.

They paid attention to what the better Japanese companies were doing. They also have an unusual degree of vertical integration, with metals companies also being related at a corporate level, as well as making their own transmissions and a lot more.
That's the exact opposite of the Ametican makes, that used to be like that, but spun off all those subsidiaries years ago to generate cash, but lost control of their quality. If Hyundai transmissions are troublesome (as some have been), they get that division to redesign them. Ford or GM have to negotiate such changes, which takes time and costs money they don't want to spend. Their joint ten-speed is an example, having to meet the needs of numerous models in both companies. It can't be changed that easily.

Yeah, much like other people in replies mentioned, Doug is not really a reviewer. He gets cool cars and neat things thanks to his 4+M subs, but at this point some of the things he wrongly describes or the features, he must be doing that on purpose.
Either that or he doesn't care enough to find out (like calling Unimog hydraulic hookups "power outlets for electric power tools"). Easy things to verify or research, but he doesn't care. I'd rather he said "I am not sure what this does" instead of calling it a power plug.

I test drove one today. They finally did a model here in Canada called "Urban" which gives you leather without the Pano roof and normal gauges. I personally dont like Pano roofs, to much glass and added weight for no reason. Bummed about not getting the nice digital gauges but, meh. As for this 2.5T. Just incredible. Good lower end torque to get you up to speed pretty quick. Finally, a good sized based 4 cylinder in the 2.5 with a turbo. This is more than likely my next vehicle and to replace my 2014 Santa Fe with the 2.4 GDI, which for me has done its job well enough. Cheers, love your channel!

Sure, minimalist interiors with lots of screens look great in a magazine, but physical buttons are so much safer and easier to use than having to dig around 3 different menus to do simple stuff, like turn on a seat warmer. Earlier this month I was thinking to replace it, I checked what is around today from Subaru, Honda and Toyota, looking for at least the same driving experience on twisty roads above 6500ft/2000mts, same interior space and quality, same torque even if it was a little more expensive, but no way!!! I decided to keep it. I’ll check again in two years.

Seems like Hyundai hit another home run with this updated Santa Fe. Very, very appealing vehicle. Hyundai mastered high-value cars for low prices for decades. They're still great at that, but now they're mastering luxury looks and feel for their respective class and price. It was one of the reasons I bought my 2018 Elantra. Compared to the other compact sedans I drove, it looked and felt premium. I was sold.
