- In the ancient Roman world, the introduction of new gods was considered a criminal offense. This put Paul in a tough position during his speech on the Areopagus. Never shy, he goes on the offensive and sows what seeds of faith he can, navigating between affirmation and calls to repentance.

Tom Wright always refreshes and encourages me! He reveals the scriptures as no one I’ve heard or read. Thank you Tom!
It has been written in so many passages
We are his Temple
The kingdom of God is within us
David in the Psalm said if you desired sacrifices I would bring them but what you desire LORD is a broken and contrite heart. We are all branches of one vine being pruned or cut away now .
I rate this as the best fit lecture so far from N.T. Wright per my education. Applause!
This is exactly where the Holy Spirit wanted Apostle Paul to be so that authorities in Athen would come to hear of the true GOD who raised Jesus Christ from the dead.
Oh, I love this. It is still true today
Thanks, again, Professor Wright. I must confess I have thought for many years that the Areopagus was rather like Hyde Park corner in London. I didn’t realise it was a kind of court.
Thank you so much for this series. Coupled with Surprised by Hope, it has been a source of great encouragement and meditation. His resurrection and ascension, the kingdom now and yet to be, and my place in it has taken on additional meaning and significance. Many thanks!
AMEN!! The Holy Spirit moved Paul in places that were hard to talk of Jesus .... but God's word prevailed!! 🙏 As a young girl i thought Paul clever to use the Unknown God monument erected, as a tool to slip the Gospel into the Greek culture! 😊 But as I got closer to the Lord, I realized it was the Word as a lamp to his feet & a light to his path ... the Holy Spirit. To invite Him daily to guide & direct us ... we can be as bold & clever as Paul & speak the words of Wisdom to others. Thank you Mr Wright again for giving us daily Bread for thought!! ❤❤
Thank you bishop.
He has reason indeed!
Paul’s confirmation of what is true about the Athenian culture resonates with me because it seems like our U.S. church culture wants to deny everything in “the world.” It seems like Paul was wise in his evangelism to speak the truth of Jesus, affirm what is of God, and deny what isn’t of the light, as he writes in another letter.
I pray that I may be bold to affirm what is true and deny what isn’t according the Kingdom of God.
Amen and amen.
Where is Justice in God's plan?
Thanks for the good question. As we survey the global atrocities or myriad injustices many experience with compounding oppression of daily micro-aggressions, we might wonder, where is justice? Prof. Wright and Prof. McCaulley delve into some of these issues in our course, 'Ethnicity, Justice, and the People of God'. Prof. Wright also speaks about this in 'Evil and the Justice of God', and many other places. One aspect of justice in the divine plan might be as both individual believers and local communities of the spirit day by day renew our committments to being 'justice-bringers' (in both theory and practice), and resist cynicism or complacency as we join God in his plan to put all things right.
Since Scripture says repentance is a gift from God ..who is the all Paul is referring to? It is none other than the elect of God, those He chose for His own possession. ..to say otherwise is to deny scripture and that means a denial of God.
