You have described the learning process of living in your car extremely well. I'm in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where I live in my truck. For food, I do a number of things. I cook in my truck, I eat at the Walmart deli for three dollars, I do breakfast at the Golden Corral Buffet on Saturday morning, and, from time to time, I get Chinese takeout. King Chinese Buffet here in Colorado Springs sells takeouts from their buffet for only $4.75 a pound. I can usually get two meals from it for around five dollars. Lunch takeouts from Walmart cost under five dollars, and I usually buy lettuce and an avocado and make salads. Golden Corral also has takeout for $6.99 a pound. I usually spend around 380 dollars per month on food and I eat like a king. In the winter when it's cold, I keep fruits and perishable items on the passenger floor where everything like eggs, cheese and meats stay refrigerated. I don't use a cooler. I hate buying ice, and the stupid thing takes up all my space.
I haven’t thought about places like Golden Corral that have by the pound!
I've been living full time in a Dodge Grand Caravan for a year and 4 months now. I quickly learned what I truly needed and definitely what I didn't. I continued to get rid of things little by little and don't miss anything. I love my bucket toilet, works great.
Shelf foods and fully-cooked foods are delicious and easy to keep, but in small quantities.
Avoid the safeway on San carlos Ave to dangerous

Try using a soft sided cooler with a damp towel covering the food and leave it open ( swamp cooler idea)

You'll learn how to pee in a jar. I have a whole little bin with hygiene wipes, doggie pee pads (put under you when you pee in jar), and one pkg of diapers for emergencies. I won't go into bucket method for #2, you're not there yet. Only in the beginning is the bathroom stuff a problem. CZcams is rife with videos on mechanics of living in car.
