    Another great video! Had no idea you could alter the axis of an object that way. The confirm object addon is a great tool to help with this type of situatuin. Would love to see you do a video on that addon if you have any experience with it. Thanks for all the great content.

    Another great video, thanks for making it! I've run into that same challenge of spike rotation, but after watching your other videos about Instancing, I've come up with a partial fix (that maybe you can make even better!). I make a plane (or a series of planes) roughly around the shoulder pad and put instances of the spike on the faces of the planes. I use ring cuts on the planes to get enough faces for a spike pattern that I like (although I will frequently delete some of them later) and the Shrinkwrap modifier to put those faces onto the shoulderpad. The rotations can still get a little bit funky if the plane structure got too distorted by the Shrinkwrap, but after making the instances real, they only need minor cleanup. I suspect that there's an elegant way to do this with Geo Nodes, but that's an area where I'm a total noob!

    • @ArtisansofVaul
      @ArtisansofVaul  Před rokem

      I was reading your message and I get the feeling GeoNodes is the answer. I did a recent video where you raycast instances to a surface and it can align them with the normal of the face hit. I haven't tried it for this case but I think it has a good chance of working. You can find the video here: czcams.com/video/wFaODMBxZD4/video.html

    Another great video!! I just had this issue the other day while making something and ended up just positioning them by hand x_x . I will definitely be using this in the future.

    • @ArtisansofVaul
      @ArtisansofVaul  Před 2 lety

      Great to see it being useful. Positioning by hand can just be such a pain to get "right". I just wish I could solve the local Y axis not facing down issue.

    Never you you could move object origins with the transform tool, that could be helpful.
    I couldn't find a way to add this to a shortcut, but I did see you can add it to the quick tool bar.
    Edit: it looks like CTRL+. is the default short cut to toggle this on and off

    If you want to control the x and y directions on that surface you can achieve this using the geometry nodes. A little more work but will help with larger surfaces with multiple items like that. Look it up.

      @ArtisansofVaul  Před rokem

      @@KareemHenein Ah, this doesn't really "stick" them to the surface, instead its just using instancing. I use something similar when wanting to create something where I can swap out certain items (though for the shoulder pads an instance on a face would be more appropriate as its easier to control the direction of the normal of the face and therefore the direction of the object (say for the spikes).
      Thanks for the link though.

    Great tips! How would you go about lining the spikes up/centring?

    • @ArtisansofVaul
      @ArtisansofVaul  Před 2 lety +1

      That's the tricky bit. Annoyingly with this on you cant really lock to an axis as it affects how it moves, so that's a really limiting feature I'm afraid.

  • @muratix07

    Thank you for a tip but I have a question. I do what you do but my object turns by itself when I try to align it on a surface. How can I fix it?

    • @ArtisansofVaul
      @ArtisansofVaul  Před 29 dny

      When you say that it turns itself it is likely for one of two reasons.
      1. You have not applied the rotation to the object (it will always try to face itself so the "down" side according to the Z axis is towards the face you're aligning to.
      2. The face it is aligning to has the normal facing in the wrong direction.

    I have an architecture project of an old building and there is a curved wall on the side of the building, with three arched doors (middle-left-right). All of the doors need to have a specific brick design around them and it needs to match the brick line going all around the rest of the building. My problem when using shrinkwrap is that it warps too much and I just need the brick design to curve to the facade so they follow the curvature. Any suggestions on what to do? Simple deform won't work ether. xD

    • @ArtisansofVaul
      @ArtisansofVaul  Před 2 lety +1

      If the curve is consistent you could use a curve modifier to match the curve, that way you can control how much the bricks warp by your placement of loops in the bricks (you can even have none and then the bricks will remain flat). The best thing about this is you can do it before you place the objects on the wall so you can change anything you dont like.
