A frail looking Pope John Paul II paid homage to the Indian independence leader Mohandas Gandhi on Saturday.
The 79 year old pontiff's visit has angered some Hindu groups accusing Christians of forcibly converting the poor.
Police beat and kicked three Hindu nationalists when they started to protest near a grassy hill overlooking the river where Gandhi was cremated and where the Pope laid a wreath.
It was the only violent incident amid tight security for the Pope's visit.
It is the Pope's first visit in thirteen years to India.
He was received by a guard of honour after arriving in New Delhi.
The ailing Pontiff inspected the guard, but turned back halfway down, clearly in need of a rest.
Still on the parade ground, he spoke with Sonia Gandhi, the Italian-born leader of the main Indian opposition party.
And in the Presidential mansion he met with the Indian president K.R. Narayanan and Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
The Indian government has been eager to play down tensions between Christians and the majority Hindus.
Hindu groups are angry about Catholic missionary work in the country and have recently staged protests against the Pope.
But despite a ban on protests and a heavy police presence along the routes the Pope was travelling some protestors were undeterred.
    They were quickly dealt with.
The Pope later paid homage to the Indian independence leader Mohandas Gandhi.
On Sunday, which coincides with the Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights, the Pope will lead thousands in Mass in a New Delhi stadium.

@no If people have the freedom to choose their religion, then why does your country kill and persecute Christians?
"And you shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that endures to the end shall be saved." - Matthew 10:22
The truth is only one thing, not all things. And Jesus Christ is it.
"Jesus said unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man comes unto the Father, but by me." - John 14:6
