  • In this update, I start removing the transmission from my 1983 Mercedes-Benz 240D for purposes of replacing the clutch.

How can I know how the transmission guides do not mark them and I cannot put them in their position?

did you get a brand new clutch kit or are you planning to use the one from the 79 parts car?

Michael Sackstein The car has come so much further than I ever thought it would from the wreck it was when I pulled it out of that garage/barn in 2012 that I opted to put in a brand new clutch. I haven't even separated the '79 engine and transmission yet.
The seller of the '79 told me that it was parked with a new clutch (no further info on that), but I tend not to trust what he told me about that car. That clutch may be like new, or it may be unusable. Plus, to really be safe, I'd also have to swap the flywheel from that car. So... I opted for a brand new clutch for the '83. Hoping to get the transmission out of the car tonight. Would have done it last night, but I didn't feel well (something I ate on Sunday, I think).

Oh man, sorry to hear that! I've been there before, food poisoning is no fun, but hopefully it's not that bad! I agree a new clutch is the way to go with this car!

Michael Sackstein Thanks. It's all good, though. I'm already back to 100%. It wasn't full-blown food poisoning. I just felt really "off" yesterday. Honestly, I just ate better yesterday and got a (rare) good night's sleep, and I'm fine.

glad to hear. as far as the clutch replacement goes you may have to resurface the flywheel. I guess it's kind of hard to tell right now because you haven't really driven the car any distance at all. but if it looks ok then you should be good to go with just a rag and some brake cleaner.

Michael Sackstein Looks like it probably is OK as-is. Have yet to make a final determination on that, but I think I'll be good to go with a cleaning.
