  • Many elders (including your parents?) who need assisted living, memory care or an adult day health program for safety or better overall health are in denial and require convincing.
If your parent or other loved one has difficulty dressing, cooking, doing laundry, housekeeping, opening mail or paying bills on time, it may be time for getting some care from outside. However, many older adults are in denial about these matters. Preparing for a discussion with them works best when you are honest and open about your observations and concerns. Enlist agreement with your siblings, then talk with a geriatric care manager or clergyperson-who may even mediate-to have this important discussion. If the elder is resistant, try again later on to avoid a crisis.
