heavy lifting used to be fun for me, until back surgery, a torn bicep tendon on my dominant arm, and a broken knee all within two years. Mind you I'm only 33. I still get to the gym regularly, but it's sad what I can do now vs what I used to be able to do. I truly envy those who haven't had chronic, and debilitating at times, injuries. But if you work hard and take it gradually you can regain a lot of your former abilities. At one point I was told by Drs that I would never pick up more than 20 pounds ever again in my life. I refused to accept that, and 5 years after I was told that, I packed an elk off the mountain alone. Over 5 miles back to the truck, and it took all afternoon and all night and several trips, but I did something medical science said I would never be able to. Stay gritty kids! Love your podcast!

So I'd say one of the things that hunters take out of their experiences like the rain hunts you guys talk about, is that it gave you the knowing... that you can survive, it just wasn't about filling your tags, you made it about getting through the conditions to achieve the goals you set.

From Michigan and live at 600' SL.
Had an artery break in my neck that caused a stroke in January of 2010, changed my life forever. I now work to live, not live to work.
Went on my first elk hunt in Colorado that September against everyone's wishes. Haven't missed a year since.
My approach has evolved along the way from training in the months leading up to the hunt to now I started training everyday for 2 years now. That has also changed me. But last March I started weighing everything I eat and staying on target for macronutrients. This alone has been a game changer, keeping garbage food out of your guts.
The extreme altitude change is difficult and I do what I can, I get migraines for the first few days but after that I'm good.
But squats are really good, similar to the same muscles used in climbing hills. Interval cardio workouts.
    Non scripted push-up variations.
Yoga(don't knock until you fail at it once). All my scouting trips for whitetail and hunts at home include a backpack. I typically get 2 weeks out west so I want to be my best, at 50 years old the clock is ticking on my DIY hunts. It's awesome to me how many of us turn to fitness and good nutrition because of western hunting, makes me happy.

I found your channel a few months ago. Ever sense I’ve been sucking down all the podcasts I have time to fit. I can’t believe you guys only gave 50 subscribers right now. I feel like it’s about to start growing exponentially. Especially as this next hunting season rolls on.

One additional comment on getting healthier. Sometimes the way to notice you are improving is your recovery time. This may shorten as you get in to shape.

Just watching this 11/23/21. Tell Ryan the same process that he applies to hunting can be applied to public speaking: see the shot = look at the audience, aim= smile at /engage with the audience, pull through the shot = concentrate on projecting your voice to the back of the room. If he does these things in his mind repeatedly while speaking about the subject. It will take away the time that would be devoted to getting nervous. He/ you will already know the subject matter so all he needs to do is do the delivery process to make the talk pleasant for the audience. Btw love the peanut butter recipe you gave me last month. Killed a coyote today! Happy thanksgiving !

Im sure you guys have covered it, but i'm interested in when Ryan comes into a new spot, and is looking to say do a backpack hunt out of state or in his current state, looking through on-x or google earth and how he makes his decision to what hes going to pursue and thinks will make good country for a successful hunt. WA here, looking at high country blacktail deers is my go to, love out of state as well, but still trying to master the high country blacktails. (rifle hunt) Thanks LOVE this content and the passion for the lifestyle.

I'm glad to see you read these. I find it funny that we do think a lot alike. I'm no runner. In fact I only want to run if I have something chasing me. But I have agreed to doing a 5k. I know I can run a 5k but don't want too. I agreed because my wife wants to do it. I agreed because I want to support her. The training for it is what she wants more than the actual 5k. I'm very supportive of her. I also set small goals that are achievable. The reason is if the goal is to large you wont achieve it. 1 year ago I was tired of feeling bad. So I started by quitting smoking. I then started gaining weight. I started walking but started by doing a mile every day until it became easy. I lost 35 lbs. I stopped measuring gains by losses because I stopped loosing weight. I realized I was getting discouraged by no longer loosing. I was gaining muscle and not loosing so I started measuring gains by how much easier the effort became. Then add more to keep it challenging.

I went Elk hunting for the first time back in the mid-70s in my early twenty's with a 30 od 6 Rifle bolt action and instead of pulling the trigger, I crabbed the bolt shaft a was pulling and bushing the bolt action back and forth and shells were dropping on the ground and my partner asks me why didn't you pull the trigger and I answered I did and turned around and he said then why are the shells on the ground. Buck fever After that, I continued to fish from that moment on especially catch & release. Now I'm at the age of 65 thinking of getting back into hunting no experience your opinion?
