A great album to look into next would be Stranger than Fiction or Suffer. That's just the top of the iceberg. Im so excited to hear such in depth, informed, and intelligent analysis of the music that is instrumental in making me who I am today. I feel like the songs of Bad Religion almost helped to raise me in my teenage years. Thanks so much. Im going to subscribe anyway in hopes of hearing more Bad Religion.

This is a really cool video guys! I'm a 47 year old guy who's been a BR fan for about 30 years, and even though we have a difference in viewpoint (I'm an agnostic atheist) I feel part of the reason we all appreciate this band is that we still have more in common that matters than we do that differs.
Open mindedness is a dying thing in this world unfortunately! We appreciate it!

Just info that you may or may not know, Writer Greg was raised without religious background to my knowledge, while if I’m remembering correctly, The other writer Brett was raised Jewish but has been pretty much agnostic since at least teen years

@@ReactionsToTheClassics I've struggled with this myself since I was 12 years old. Generator came out that year 92. I'm a longtime fan of BR and I appreciate you guys doing these videos. If I can suggest an album or song to analyse, I'd say God song and Slumber. Just from the lyrical stand point, Im curious about your thoughts. Not my fave songs but topic wise I think are profound.

Been listening to Bad Religion for 25 years, and it's been my favorite band for the most part. I never realized what that first verse (of Don't Pray on Me) was about. Wow.
Skyscraper: I think the long silence at the end is just so that they could have a pause at the end of the CD.
Empire: "but even 10 million souls marching in February couldn't stop the worst" Ouch. I was part of that march (in Seattle, which had 50,000 people supposedly, but it was in cities around the world). Here is my take on skyscraper: When people are completely united, if they make a mistake they all jump off the cliff. God mixed up our languages, which caused humanity to be divided into nations... Which means that some of us will always survive because we won't make the same mistakes in unison.

I think you guys missed the specific charge that Skyscraper levies and I was REALLY looking forward to hearing you talk about it.
It's not about "why did God destroy the tower" it's "what was the effect?"
The were told to spread out, but instead they stayed together to build something for themselves. Like you said, in defiance of God's order. God's punishment or wrath wasn't the tower falling. He confused the men's tongues so they could not understand each other. This led to them separating from each other.
The song is pointing out that in biblical canon, this is the root cause of war and racism and all the other evils that happen when people don't understand each other and can't communicate with each other.
He damned us all to a world in which cultures are diametrically opposed for simply trying to live and work together in peace.
I'd LOVE to hear y'all's thoughts on that idea.
Beauty of opinion and as Christians could not disagree with you more. The people thought they knew better than God and went outside of His Word. In that they were confused yes, just as the Israelites were dispersed several times in the Old Testament for disobedience. God didn't create war or racism, people did and do. Plenty of rampant racism in the US between those who speak the same language.

This was the conversation I was looking for when I saw that song come up.
Of course there's racism alive and well here because we built a society on it, but where did hatred begin? When there were in groups and out groups.
Biblical canon suggests that before the confusing of tongues, everyone was of the same tribe (though it was never clear who Cain went off and found... Perhaps the old testament actually only focused on one tribe while there were others?) Would it not be rational to assume that this confounding that spread people out led to separation and tribalism which led to future conflict?
I don't know. I just always read the Tower of Babel story kinda the way I read Job or the flood.
Old testament God was ruthless.
There's a pretty clear shift when the Son shows up, but OG God has stories that portray him as willing to cause immense, long term suffering in response to very little provocation.
I guess I never fully understood how we were supposed to square the tone shift and wondered if this song would be a tool to kinda talk about it.

I don't agree with Christianity. I am a die hard Bad Religion fanatic. That being said, I like you guys. I respect religious people who can engage in intelligent conversations with those who have conflicting beliefs. Here's the problem for me, If I were going to trick a massive amount of people who will basically believe anything you tell them, into to being obedient servants in order to gain power and control, I wouldn't change a thing about the Bible, Christianity, God, Jesus. As we all know, history is the most accurate tool to use when trying to predict future behavior. It really seems more likely that humans made up the whole story in order to control other humans. It's just way more probable than an invisible being who sent us a list of 10 things he doesn't want us to do. And if we do any of them and don't repent or come clean and what not, it's a ticket to Hell. Hell by the way, is a fiery burning place for your soul to be tortured for all eternity. Wow. That's a great scam to run on people who didn't know any better. Check out George Carlin's views on religion and Bad Religion's "Come Join us" Religion has got most people hook , line and sinker. You guys kick ass though, respect.
Appreciate the kind words Shaun, obviously we are on opposite sides of this. The whole point of The Bible is that Jesus came because we cannot keep the law. The law is to show us a need for a savior not a list that we must follow to be saved. Unfortunately as with anything in this world where power is involved MANY in organized religion have gone astray and are phonies and charlatans. That doesn't make The Bible any less true. Your perspective is that it is illogical to think God created all this and ours is that it is highly illogical that everything on this Earth exists in perfect harmony, from the food chain, to the weather being just right for our survival to the wonder of our human body and all systems working just right. To think this somehow evolved out of thin air into this perfect system seems the most illogical thing ever. That said we do respect you taking the time to comment and please know that we will NEVER be in that judgemental camp of so-called Christians. Peace!
@@ReactionsToTheClassics I think the most illogical thing a person can do is to close their minds. I can be pulled to your side and become a believer. All I need is for it to make sense. For me, as we start to understand more about everything, the idea of a God as it is told to us, seems more and more unrealistic. I'm not sure you can be convinced that God might not be what you think it is or may not exist at all. What would it take? Or that the Bible stories are the same ones the Sumerians and other earlier civilizations told. I think humans edited those stories into a weapon and called it the Bible. I wanna believe I was made for a purpose and that we aren't just left over garbage that the Annunaki left here. I believe the Bible stories did happen for the most part. I also believe that Christianity doesn't require us to throw science out the window. As I understand it, blind faith was not necessary during the days that Jesus walked the earth. His followers actually saw him do "things" or use his divine powers. The Bible's "stories" were supposed to be eyewitness accounts of actual events, right? The things JC did could have been misunderstood technologies or maybe a mix of science, magic and great editing to fill in the gaps. If we were kickin it Moses and we showed him someone surfing, with his understanding, that's walking on water. You show him an EMT performing CPR to revive someone and he's gonna say resurrection. I think you and I are closer than you may think we are. Both of us have not been told the whole story. I believe that is why we both need to seek the truth rather than defend a position. I just recently within the past 4 or 5 years found out that the moon is an artificial object according to tangible evidence provided by credible scientists and NASA. And now our government is admitting the existence of UFOs that have capabilities far beyond what our technology can do. My point being, we shouldn't make final decisions when we haven't collected all the evidence. I think our Gods are the same exact thing. Your story allows room for God to tell you a bit about himself and my God which at the moment is misunderstood technology, your God could very well tell you that he's also my God. He could trick us both with his iphone 990x. If wanna keep discussing this I would love to hear more from you guys. I want you to poke holes in my tiny mind and stomp out my logic. I hope JC is real and I get to chill with him for a second. He's supposed to be here soon, right? We got a Rapture and an Armageddon on the schedule soon. Got love for you guys!!! The first song is fast paced and manic like you said. Fast drum rolls and good guitar lead. The lyrics are interesting how it's put together. I rate it a 7.0 , a little below your ratings. The second song is interesting on the lyrics. You guys made reference to the Tower of Babel in Genesis. That story clearly and simply shows the power of God, how He foils man's rebellion. I wasn't into the music that much. Your rating is similar to mine. I rate this a 6.0. The third song is a straight Rock song with good lead guitar and a solid tempo and solid lyrics. I agree with you guys that it's the best of the three songs in this video. I rate it close to yours at 7.5 I agree with both your comments especially on the theme of Christianity. You guys are honest in your reviews and you are right that sometimes we don't have to agree with the lyrics but we listen out of respect. Trey, that's awesome you have a degree in Religion and Shawn, that's awesome that you said you were a Pastor. This is interesting information you shared. The best part of this video is the commentary and opinions by you guys.

I didn’t really care for the music or the political or religious aspects of it. I thought as a Christian, Trey and Shawn made some great points on that first song. The people in Babel were being disobedient and was building a tower to themselves and God proved his might and gave them different languages so that they would scatter across the Earth.

@@jasontheoldmillennial7197 The last sentence of your post contradicts the second sentence of your post. If God has such a problem with people building towers, where is he now that there are skyscrapers in every major city far taller than anyone in Biblical times could have built? It's a myth that attempts to explain why people have different languages, when we know that's not how languages developed, any more than snakes are legless because of some divine punishment.
