Yes, there needs to be a Grande Commissioner in cfb. I would like Kelly being in that position. It HAS to be an innovative person.

I'd choose him 10 x out of 10 over Saban or Stoops, or Meyer

They should have kept the traditional conferences and created football only conferences.

Neal Brown said EXACTLY that (about coaches being well compensated).

As soon as the players get organized with lawyers to develop a collective bargaining demand, that will force the issue. Right now each conference is trying to protect its stash of money and give them a stiff-arm. Hence, the attacks on Harbaugh who is a players champion advocating transfers, expanded playoff, NIL, and now revenue share for players. Chip needs to be careful otherwise he will get hunted by the greed at the top of college football, just like Harbaugh. Conferences and the NCAA make gobs of money for themselves, paying big salaries and bonuses to its employees. They are the obstacle, not the solution.

this will never happen because there are 3 full levels of NCAA football below this with players who would happily take their spots, and every year there are more graduating from HS and want to play. This isnt the same as the NFL where the players are the bona fide best in the world and theres a big drop off between a 5x pro bowler veteran and the practice squad rookies. there is way more parity in terms of players talent in college

Greg McClroy made a great point that expecting 18-24 year olds to safely and intelligently participate in a collective bargaining organization is a lot to ask. I have no problems with unions but asking college students to run one is not as simple as we are making it out to be.

12 or 6 Super conferences and you get all this done.

It can be done quick and easy. With the Pac-12 gone it makes it even easier. Big 10 has the north Big 12 has the West SEC has the south and ACC has the east. You have ABC/ESPN get the SEC, Fox has the BIG 12 CBS has the BIG10 and NBC has the ACC. Each super conference has a championship game and the winner gets in the playoff automatically with a bye. The rest are picked from how they finish in the last regular season pole to get to 12. The Rose, Peach, Sugar, and Orange host the top 4 seed games. Fiesta, Cotton, Holiday, Citrus host first round games (can be rotated around other bowl game spots). Semi finals are in LA and Indy and Championship in Vegas. You can still do bowl games for the other teams that don't the National Playoff like is done now.

Only problem is the big 12 doesn't really have west coast teams. Not even schools from the original PAC 8. Every team that went to the big 12 had worse ratings than wsu.

Bottom 8 relegated - plus bottom 1/2 two years in a row. Top 16 get home field bonus.

If there is a Commissioner of CFB, the NCAA should disappear completely from CFB at that time

Rich, you know who might drive it? ESPN (and maybe others) could come to the top 64 (128?) teams and say, let's do this and pile up the $s for all of these schools.

Rich keeps adding details and bs, but he is not concentrating on the central issue of football.
Everyone knows that BCS football is giant and the central issue is money. The discussion could be cut in half if they just concentrated on BCS football and money.

As a university dean I can fully attest that college is not ‘higher education’ at all. It’s simply more or additional education. Most college professors have zero idea how to teach. Of course professors in education departments have instructional design training, but thats about it. Chip needs to be the Commish…

One meeting between the Big 10 and SEC commissioners would get it done.

This might be a hot take, but why aren't players with NIL deals paying for their own college instead of having a scholarship? Save the scholarships for the kids who need them, not the QB making a mil on NIL

That is somehting that will not be sorted out anytime soon. For now, it ends up being an unsustainable mix of pros and amateures not only on one team's roster but within the conferences (Think of the "football" money disparity between Ohio State and Northwestern). The idea of an athlete simply being on scholarship will soon be a thing of the past at the top 10-15 universities.

I love Rich's analysis most of the time. Here is one area I actually disagree with him. I feel if we want to start compensating these players then the football teams should be disassociated (apart from name) from the collage in general. I do not feel the college (and me in turn) should have to pay for these athletes when my child wants to get an education. In many cases we already are supporting these athletes through scholarships and other programs which are often not available to no athletes. Actually paying them makes me think that we should just have a minor league system and let them come up through that route.

Why not? Because it's all about greed and money and those are very bad reasons
