Unions are a form of mob rule, just like government, which charges you for unfair representation and treatment, just like government. Striking will only lead to an increase in automation, which is coming sooner or later anyway.
Friedman's negative income tax, from Capitalism and Freedom, would give all U.S. workers far more bargaining power, as well as provide a more efficient safety net than our failing welfare system and pathetic EITC, imo.

God bless Chris Hedges - I truly hope that there are younger people out there to replace the philosopher-journalists of the 20th century who are getting on these days. Noam Chomsky, Chris Hedges, John Pilger... There are some, though: Max Blumenthal, Ben Norton, Lee Camp, Aaron Mate, even Jimmy Dore - comedians who talk politics are often able to be brutally honest about the world. I think a big problem is the end of print journalism and book-reading - people think and learn differently when they read longer articles or books than they do watching videos or TV news. The world moves on, though - and we must be ready to move with it.

Our system of democracy puts power in the elites, corporations, lobbyists. There is only one country, Switzerland, where the people still has the power. Since very few people understand this, changing the system to give the power back to the people will not happen in US. Smart ones who understand this already have plan to leave the US when this country falls apart. The downturn has started since I see more homeless people in many US cities than when I went back to Vietnam this year.

no use getting excited about the 'working class,' they have no political cohesion and were never intended to be the directors or benficiaries of usa politics. hedges is a good person, but he sings his song to a nation of deaf-mutes. rather like noam chomsky has been doing for 60 years. and with similar prospects of effect.
the parties have not betrayed the workers. they owe nothing to the workers, both are vehicles to power for sale to whoever will subsidize their election process.
the people of the usa will have to build a new organization to serve their interests, but that requires a social cohesion notably lacking in usa society. it will not happen, on evidence to date. not every society survives, and in some ways usa is beginning to resemble the austro-hungarian empire.

So rather than working to control the Democratic party he wants to take on both parties simultaneously, which only splits opposition to the GOP thus keeping them in power.
