The Perfect Blackened Fish Recipe // Easy Way to Blacken Any Fish You Have!

- What’s up, y’all! In today’s video, I’ll show you the easiest recipe and method for how to blacken fish. Now, this recipe can be used for all types of fish you have on hand, which makes it the perfect and easy weeknight meal or dinner for you and your family. You can use tilapia, snapper, whiting, catfish, monkfish, etc., or whatever you have on hand. This recipe also cooks pretty quickly in under 5 minutes depending on the type of fish you choose to use. All you will need is your fish of choice, butter, cajun (all purpose) seasoning, black pepper, salt (optional) and paprika. All you need to do is season the fish, then place in a skillet with some butter and cook it until it blackens to your liking and develops a nice crust. This should take no longer than 5-6 minutes depending on the fish you use and its thickness. I mention it in the video, but what I mean by “blackened” is simply developing a nice crust and color on the fish while still keeping the fish nice and juicy on the inside. You don’t need to cook the fish in the skillet for too much longer than 5-6 minutes or you run the risk of overcooking it. Hope you enjoy the recipe!
INGREDIENTS
- fish (fillet) of your choice
- butter
- cajun seasoning
- black pepper
- paprika
- salt (optional)

when your butter browns like that it's burning, to keep it from doing that add 1/2 tbs of olive oil. It will def taste better.
Where yo fish video
The butter isnt burning, the dairy in it is toasting and it is what creates the blackened crust

Thank you. This is what kills your people, butter. Olive oil, avocado oil, and even vegetable oil is wayyyyyy better than butter. What is your fascination with butter guys?
I did this tonight and it is now a regular part of our home menu. Thanks, Chef!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed!
This made me look like I know what I be doing in the kitchen lol! Thank you for making it so simple and easy yet delicious!! ❤
I just made this today with flounder and it' absolutely delicious. So tender and moist with just the right kick of Cajun heat. Thanks for this one.
Succinct and to the point. Love recipes like this! Love this recipe.
I usually incorporate a super, super thin layer of corn starch (or potato, whatever) on top of the seasoning when I blacken fish - it’s not traditional but I find it helps get that glassy, snappy texture I want, it adds to the depth of the color, and it even helps the seasoning maintain a little better flavor, I imagine because it’s a bit protected from the heat
Thankyou!!! Yum! You just saved our 4th of July!!
God bless!!!
Great i love blackened dishes thanks for teaching us how to do it. Your food definitely has a new orleans flare to it meaning extra delicious
Glad you enjoyed the video! Blackened fish is one of my staples! Thanks for watching and commenting! 💪🏾

Oh you DID that!!! Thank you for sharing your expertise! It looked absolutely scrumdilliumptious!!!!
Thank you!💪🏾 I’m glad you enjoyed the video, and I need to add that word to my vocab!😂
@@HOMECOOKHERO LOL. You definitely need to add it. Most people swear by olive oil. I used your recipe and it didn't stick to the pan nor did my kitchen get all smokey. Oh, and I actually made that with tilapia and it was absolutely delicious. Thanks again for the wonderful video.🤜🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Glad it turned out so well for you! Thanks again for the laugh!😂
great simple and yummy recipe! Thank you yo!!
Glad I could help!
I do the Cajun seasoning all day on my catfish granted I always fry mine maybe I'll try this way since it looks delicious.
Looks delicious!

Made it with Tilapia. Tasty! Thanks

Going to try this one tonight because I have some Pacific pod that needs to be cooked. I'm going to finish mine with lime juice and be kind of Daring. You did a great job

Nothing but tge GOOD Stuff
I have some walleye in my fridge now and had no idea how I was going to fix it. I’m gluten free and lower carb, so I didn’t want to use flour or cornmeal. This looks PERFECT! Thank you 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽!
A flakey fish is best.
Walleye is the best tasting fish ever insult you people get eaten cuz mostly have to catch it yourself. There's a type of freshwater bass called striper that's actually just behind walleye.
Either Pacific or Atlantic Cod would work well for this
@@gaittr it was absolutely amazing. I took some of the basics from this recipe. We have a good friend who used to live in Alaska. He goes back a couple of times a year. He always brings us back, fresh salmon and haddock.
@@gaittr relax. I agree walleye and striper are delicious. I've caught, cleaned and cooked both. The texture doesn't lend itself to this preparation method. Catfish, snapper and other light and flaky varieties work best.
I’m sorry that people do not know how to give polite constructive criticism in todays society. I personally enjoyed your video. I usually watch a video through completely before attempting to replicate on my own. I loved your video and am so excited to cook mine now.
I’ll let you know how I do. I have never cooked fish in this method but sure love to eat it.
Man I tried this on some walleye fillets........ Thank you for sharing!!
Hey bro, glad I could help out! Glad you enjoyed 💪🏾💪🏾
Oh! Am I going to do this..... I also like to make Oven Fried fish also...
Making this tonight
Yes, hope it turned out great! 💪🏾
@@HOMECOOKHERO it sure did I used flounder 😛🤩
Cool😉
Perfect recipe sir!
Thanks for sharing!
#New Subbie!
Hey there, thanks so much! Definitely appreciate the support!
Good job.
Thank you
Yum 😋
Looks good YALL
Thanks, Y’ALL! 😂
Loved the ease of this recipe thanks, but I didn't have the cajun seasoning and used Old Bay instead and it came out way too salty. Next time I'll get the correct spice and not use so much.
Interesting. Check the sodium, a lot of Cajun seasoning is salter than Old Bay
Looks DELICIOUS
Thank you!
boy get outta here with that teflon ass pan!
IM just messing man this recipe helps so much. 😂 appreciate you brother!
I have bought some triggerfish and will blacken it tonight!
I love this free information ❤ as I’m typing. I’m cooking this.
Good video
I tried it last night and it was very good!!
I like your pan. What kind is it? I'm trying your recipe tonight.
It looks like it’s a T-fal pan
What could i sub the cajun seasoning for ?
You can use an all purpose seasoning mixed with some paprika, or even chili powder, for some color!
Looks good 😋tfs. God bless in Jesus name
Man that's some very tasty looking fish! I was wondering though can I use the same method on cast iron?
Appreciate it bro. And yep, I actually prefer blackening on cast iron myself.
@@HOMECOOKHERO Awesome! I have a couple of stone coated pans but have a bunch of cast iron which I prefer to use myself.
Yummy…sea bass!
I found it too salty with the cajun seasonal.
I did the other half of the batch with jerk seasoning and it was perfect
Nice! I love jerk seasoning on fish!
You should make your own Cajun seasoning so that you control how much salt is in it, instead of buying the store bought premade seasoning. It will probably taste a whole lot better too.
I’ve found the same thing. Any commercial spice mix you buy will have salt have the #1 ingredient. With the salt from the butter and from the fish, it was too much. So I’ve got a blackening seasoning recipe with no salt at all. Now with the butter and fish, it’s about perfect.
@@mikebennett9356 The Cajun seasoning he is using has salt as the 3rd ingredient and is not salty at all. And you can use unsalted butter, best yet clarified butter made from unsalted butter, than you don't have to worry about it burning as well.
I'll try this with Clarified Butter. Good idea or not so??
Great idea!
❤❤❤❤
Could I combine avocado oil with a tab of butter to cook in? Thank you.
Definitely! I used more oil/butter than really necessary lol, but yes avocado oil and a bit of butter would be perfect!
What brand of skillet you are using? Thx
T-fal nonstick skillet!
@@HOMECOOKHERO Thanks!
Still waiting for the first cook on CZcams who says, "Don't touch it. Don't move it" to actually follow their own instructions. 😂
What kind of fish is it?
❤
😋😋😋😋😋
Is your cajun seasoning not salty af?
I gotta try this. Normally, I salt and pepper the fillet, with a light covering of flour but this looks too good not to try. I have a nice pickeral fillet (I'm Canadian) and that will be my supper.
Which fish did you use ?
Hey, this was a sea bass fillet, previously frozen.
what fish did you use??
Sea bass!
Looks just like swai
With that much seasoning it would have a good crust, but being such a light meat it feels like it would be salty? Apparently not :-)
Drop the you all No southerner use it like you do
Y’all y’all y’all y’all y’all y’all y’all y’all y’all y’all y’all
Does Sea Bass really need anything on it besides salt and pepper maybe ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Just saying. Sea Bass is already so buttery and flavorful, but these do look amazing.
Take a shot for every time you hear “y’all” the fish will taste great
Y'ALL YA'LL YA'LL YA'LL
😂😂💀
So hoped for the recipe for the Cajun seasoning, y'all. Lovely, but if y'all can't get the commercial seasoning, it's a crap shoot. Y'all.
Yikes! Pretty good idea for a future video though!
hey ya'll cooking fish ya'll i use cajun seasoning ya'll cook in butter ya'll
😂😂
The butter looks a little burnt.
how many times he used the word "y'all "? comment below.
This looks absolutely delicious, but for the love of Pete please stop saying y'all
😂😂😂😂😂 You got it!! And thank you!💪🏾
As a guy who has been fishing and cooking all of my life I have to ask this question. From the beginning of your video you refer to the fish as this fish. Four people out there who are trying to follow what you're doing you're not saying this trout or this flounder or whatever fish it is. Why would you make a video and never refer to the name of the fish? You guys make these videos and it kills me that you don't take into consideration that everyone watching Once all of the information. Your presentation was fabulous I absolutely loved it. You've just got to name the fish it's that simple. Don't feel alone. Almost everyone who makes these videos does the same thing. There are even fisherman making fishing videos and they'll catch the fish and say this fish is awesome this fish is Big this fish is blah blah blah but they won't say the name of the dog on fish. I don't know if it's the weed or the meds you guys are taking but please seriously give all of the information.
Did you not watch the video?? It's a sea bass.
Why such a salty comment ?
Sorry to the catfish I've caught this day. But a fellas gotta eat
😂😂
I stand corrected. You finally said Seabass. Why it took you till the middle of the video to do that I don't know. If I was making this video it would have been the first thing I said prior to putting any spice on it.
You are right! I realized that after I uploaded.
Yall
🤣I know haha
He said it 32 times in a 4:42 minute video 😆😆😆😆😆
It's not sea bass ya basa from Vietnam 😂 ya all
Blackened ANYTHING uses NO oil
YOU SAY YALL TOO OFTEN
I agree!
Nah u don’t. Do you.
Do you even realize how many times you say "y'all"?
Yes, I definitely do now y’all 😂😂😂
Good work brother. That is exactly how I am gonna fix mine next time. I always use oil and I bet that butter takes it to a whole new level. Don't know why I never thought of that. Will let you know how it turns out.
ya'll b ya'lling, and ya'l be ya'll yo yo.
that's catfish
No it’s sea bass fillets. Thanks for watching! Cheers!💪🏾
you're an awesome cook
Nice video, looks delicious and easy to cook. But constantly saying "y'all" detracts from the enjoyment of the video. 😉
Thank you! I’ve definitely realized that haha. Appreciate the feedback.
Armature cooking at best,you'll, know what I mean yu'all,you'll. G't it ya'll.
Not tryna be that guy but dont use metal on non stick pans
Your fish looks good but this is NOT BLACKENED! this could be considered “bronzed” please go and study the history of the dish !
Swai ???? Gross.
I know it's probably just a nervous tic, but try to get through just one presentation without saying "y'all" ever other word. Just to see if you can do it. Very annoying.
Said 30 times! Count 'em!
