- Steppenwolf performs "Born To Be Wild" live at the Farm Aid concert in Austin, Texas on July 4, 1986. Farm Aid was started by Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp in 1985 to keep family farmers on the land and has worked since then to make sure everyone has access to good food from family farmers. Dave Matthews joined Farm Aid's board of directors in 2001.

Farm Aid's performances are donated by the artists in order to raise funds and raise awareness for family farmers. They've raised their voices to help - what can you do? - Hudba
This song impressed quite a number of us in Vietnam in 1968-1969. It was heard over Radio Saigon and on the club juke boxes a million times. Never got tired of it.
Was 16. Parents gone far away...for a long weekend!
Dad left his keys by the door...
A few hours later I sat in his Le Mans. 350cc...
Had never driven a car before. I floored it till the end of the song... it was flying! Windows down... Spring had just started... second biggest rush in my life!
@@edmourgagnon1504 I thought you were going to say you wrecked the car lol!!
Thanks for your service, keep rocking with the best of them all, Steppenwolf!!
@lesschoenberger3070
Well almost....
Although I had been watching dad for 10 years doing the shifting..... I came in too fast in the parking lot of our home... I was on two wheels for what seemed like an eternity!
;) told my dad about it 15 years later. And he did not believe me...
:)
@@edmourgagnon1504 Lol!! Glad no harm was done!!
Steppenwolf deserve to be in Rock Hill of Fame as much as any other late 60's band!
I have a rock channel..please come to join my page.
more so.
The R&R Hall of Fame doesn’t deserve them! Same for the Moody Blues.
@@wlodell Exactly! I'd also add Jethro Tull to that list of legendary rock artists.
True story. A club in Bloomfield, NJ booked Steppenwolf and advertised the show. Except they forgot to tell John Kay and Steppenwolf. So somebody from the club calls John kay in New Orleans and, lo and behold, he says, "okay, i'll get the band together and we'll come up and play. It was a small place in the mid seventies and my sister went. She said it was outrageous and Kay and the guys were gracious and wonderful with the crowd and blew the doors off the place.

The best driving song along with Highway Star.
Highway Star was a bad ass cruising tune.

One of the best driving rock songs ever recorded.
This and Radar Love. And believe it or not, Karen Carpenter has a few tunes that make great diving music.

Don’t forget Deep Purple ‘Highway Star’...
So many more great song s Mr kay did. Thanks for that😂

1st Heavy Metal song, PERIOD
John Kay…an incredible early life. Born to a German soldier during the war in what is now Russia. Father killed. Mother and son refugees on an arduous journey in East and West Germany eventually to Canada. Partially blind…never spoke any English.
Just an all around compassionate human being. He never forgets his humble roots.
If an alien came down and asked, "What is rock-n-roll?" I'd have them watch this.
Do u think the Alien will be impressed?
@@chinchang5117 yes!
So your gonna lie to em ???
They were smart enough to get to our planet, I don't think they are gonna buy it..
Now had you said
Grateful Dead, pink Floyd, ECT yes everything gonna be cool, got nothing against the wolf but they are not the poster child for rock and roll.

I introduced my kids to classic rock at an early age. They all know immediately when a Steppenwolf song comes on the radio.
Well done!!!
1969. I was 9 yrs old. Started listening to Steppenwolf. I had older bros & sisters. Started everything at a very young age. No regrets
Same girl,same 😆
A great song, the first time I heard HEAVY METAL mentioned in a song or reference in music and first time I heard a guitar mimic a motor engine, I was hooked on this wild sound as a 60s and early 70s kid. That legendary howling 1 man chorus is for me still one of the most extravagant exclamations of youth power to this day 🙏🏽
This song was so ahead of his time. Sounds like it belong to the 80s, but in this video was almost 20 years old
EXACTLY 👍🏽 you couldn’t have said that better
Beautiful footage, Beautiful Band, Beautiful Song, Beautiful performance. And John Kay was and still is at 77 one of the coolest badasses to ever walk the p!anet!
One of many learnable tunes of my era, 1970. Steppin' Wolf still has it.
He became better with ages...wow..my favorire song...(I felt in love in 1971.).....
No wonder why this Song has been used in so many Movies,
Sitcom's etc. This Song KICKS ASS! Johnny Kay and the Band
are killing it.....OUTSTANDING!
Thank you so much for Posting this Beauty..........🎸💚
One of the top rock tunes of all time.
Generation Gods immortalized by this song!!
America's anthem 🇺🇸 🤘🤘
I remember trying to isolate all the instruments in this song and hearing something I couldn't place. It was John's slide. Truly great band.
42 year old John Kay was in fine form that day !!!
One of the greatest rock voices of all time! John Kay rules!
On a par with Paul Rodgers - both their voices have lasted.
Nowhere near as good as steve marriott though ...that man stood alone
Come on !!! Let me tell you a few names: Ian peace , Jim Morrison, Axel rose, Ozzy Osborne, Freddy Mercury, Robert plant, Chris Cornell, Steven Taylor.
This guy is good but no where near this singers...
Pues ya no la tiene, vaya gallos!!!!
Hot damn -- YES!!
That was just GREAT ! J.K.'s slide part in the ending was excellent !
Had a crush on him in the 60’s❤️. Loved their songs!!!
Amazing, take-no-prisoners mind-blowing rock and roll.
Where's the water 2 put out the fire?! John Kay was so cool w/his hot moves. Whoa! Such a great song..& these guys rocked it !!!
I remember listening to this when I was a little kid. It was on 8 track in my dad's 1976 Chevrolet pick-up. I used to run back and forth on the bench seat from my dad to the passenger door rocking out. At 5 years old! Wow! Memories!
I saw this performance at Manor Downs live in-person in 1986 and it was astounding. The entire performance.
fabulous drummer!
First rock band and song I ever heard. I was 5 yrs old and my dad was jammin his Steppenwolf vinyl on his old record player. The good ol days
I saw him live John Kay was one of the best Rock and Roll Singers in History.Peace. Jc

Remember dancing to this as a 17 year old 1969/70 in the disco. Brilliant.
One of the all time great songs and guitar riffs

awesome- and THE ONLY rock star i've ever seen WEARING A WRIST WATCH while performing - and i'm old
He kept his guitar pick there!
Absolutely BRILLIANT,,,,,,,,, thanks guys
One of my obbesions. Love this man ❤️💋
saw them in ny, dropped some acid could not find my car, thought some one stole my barracuda. just made the last bus to nj,the next day i remember that i parked on the other side of the lot, took a bus to ny and found my car, what a trip.
That's a great story haha. That sounds like it would be been exhausting, but if you had acid maybe not so much haha
Funny stuff.
😂😁🤘🤘
A loooooong, strange trip!
Thank god this song was invented especially for driving and yes I listen to Steppenwolf even though I was born in 03
@Can Yavuz awesome
I saw them live c. 1970. They were the tightest band I ever heard. Sounded exactly like the record, unlike here.
They are tight, for sure. But are they as tight as 0:41 ? Looks a bit painful if you move the wrong way.
Beth Dunham your dad played it in the band.
😎
Kevin Kelly not really. some of their early songs were recorded “live in the studio” meaning rehearsed until ready, then recorded in 1 take without punch-in overdubs. i had the extreme pleasure to do foh on a one nighter and it was seriously impressive how much they did play songs just like the recordings i had listened to for years, which helped me tremendously. just sayin too...
@Kevin Kelly They sounded better
I believe that they purposely dragged it out for farm Aid.still sounded great.
Great era of the American rock, for love unity and peace at home and love and admiration for other nations, not the imposed conflict and wars, by our failed two party system.
Wow, great sound for an outdoor festival. Iconic song.
Off night vocally for John. Lifetime fan. He has always had it. Love him.
They had played a show earlier in the day and were flown in late to do this show so I'm sure he was a little "spent" by then.
To be honest his voice sounds tired, like he either had a virus or symptoms of fatigue. He still knocked out a decent attempt at the song, a great professional.
@@Pulsonar Read my post above yours, it explains it.
@@lesschoenberger3070 yep, I didn’t read yours I just answered direct, at least we concur 👍🏾
The slide guitar work by John Kay is awesome as well here. One of the greatest rock legends of all time. An incredible talent here!
And it was LOUD too, probably heard across half of Texas!!!
So badass to go from singing without a guitar most of the song to throwing it on at the end and just jamming on the slide.
Awesome performance.
Great frontman!
Amazing!
YES!!!!.
"Born To Be Wild"
Get your motor runnin'
Head out on the highway
Lookin' for adventure
And whatever comes our way
Yeah Darlin' go make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once
And explode into space
I like smoke and lightning
Heavy metal thunder
Racin' with the wind
And the feelin' that I'm under
Yeah Darlin' go make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once
And explode into space
Like a true nature's child
We were born, born to be wild
We can climb so high
I never wanna die
Born to be wild
Born to be wild
Get your motor runnin'
Head out on the highway
Lookin' for adventure
And whatever comes our way
Yeah Darlin' go make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once
And explode into space
Like a true nature's child
We were born, born to be wild
We can climb so high
I never wanna die
Born to be wild
Born to be wild

One of the original “hard rock” bands
Great band ! I have all of their albums !!
All these years & 1st time I seen Steppenwolf live.Singer shows teeth in born to be wild the great bikie easy rider true, rock.
This song actually coined the phrase "Heavy Metal."
@Chris Ward "this song... coined", i.e. the song literally used the phrase 'heavy metal' in the lyrics before anyone had referred to the music genre as such. This isn't a comment on which band was the first of the genre
@@yesdcotchin fuel or punk of last hippies times!
Wrong! It was HELTER SKELTER by a nice little band called BEATLES..
@@jackcrane7853 HUH? He was talking about the first time a phrase appeared in lyrics of a song that WAS HEAVY METAL! NOT the first time a song might be described as being an example of it.
Wow, I didn't realize Steppenwolf was active in the 80's but damn, they really killed this performance. I'm impressed
Great road song - Steppenwolf songs need to be rediscovered

I think the Most iconic Song in the 60s
John Kay and Steppenwolf, at least in its original incarnation of
Goldy McJohn, Jerry Edmonton,Monarch and Nicholas.
were one of the 1960's greatest rock and roll bands.
.. their influence was monumental on future rock and rollers, and rock music in general. They should have been one of the first inductees into the rock and roll hall of fame!
Brilliant album, and I think the first album I got high to. Some friends in a band tried to play The Pusher at a church basement dance and the pastor cut the circuit breakers :)
The best song for working as stock market trader 😍...
It’s easy to see how keen John Kay was given it all on his long road in reestablishing the name Steppenwolf after all the hasle with the bogus bands ruinning the name of Steppenwolf. This event mend a lot to John Kay & Steppenwolf and he knew it and delt with it A+.
Omg so cool I do remember this looks when I was a kid growing up in the 80’s...carrera sunglasses and moustache....one of the greatest song ever recorded in history...please Steppenwolf is beyond legendary....absolutely phenomenal legendary
This song represents the late '60s as l remember them.....
heavy Metal thunder
Their old drummer stayed at my house over the weekend and performed this song and magic carpet ride in downtown Hiram Ga with my uncles band
When did that happin
@MW Actually Jerry stayed with the band until they split up for the second time late 1976. Steve Palmer was there 1980-late 1984 and then it was Ron Hurst as you said, so yes who actually was it?!

Great song, and a great show, from this video. Thanks for sharing.
That 'TOUGH' look was John Kaye's ever lasting contribution to ROCK. When I was a kid, during the '60s, Steppenwolf and MC-5, were the 'outcast nonconformists' of ROCK MUSIC. I was just fascinated by the look, the image, and the music of these two bands. As a teenager and through out my life, Rock bands that 'Shake Up The Industry' are my favorites. Thanks John Kaye, for your contribution to ROCK MUSIC!🤘🎸😝!
