The DIY Mason Jar Soil Test ~ Do You Have Clay, Silt, Or Sandy Soil

  • One of the first things I did to my new lawn was to check my soil's texture-I wanted to identify the soil type by separating the sand fraction from the silt and clay fractions.
    Knowing what type of soil you have is important for understanding how water flows through your soil, how nutrients are held in your soil, how moisture is retained in your soil, and to a lesser degree can shed light on the CEC or nutrient holding capacity of your soil.
    I used a basic soil jar test to learn a lot about my soil and in this video I show you how you can do the same thing to different parts of your yard.

    Love this! You're the first "Lawn Tuber" I've seen that clearly explains why soil texture impacts your watering and fertilizer impacts. Excited to see what you do next!

      Glad to be the one! 😁 At some point I'll have to make some dedicated content for dealing with different soil types. Lawn care in sandy soil is different than clay...and rocky soil for that matter. Thanks for watching!

      Thanks John, your feelings are probably shared by many others, myself included but I'm already starting to get attached to this one as I think about everything I can and will do to improve it. Just gotta get fully unpacked in the new house first, it's such a huge chore relocating at this stage in life. Thanks a bunch for being part of the TM family!

      That's awesome, if you've got kids it makes for a cool science experiment to do with them too!

    Your the best thanks for doing these videos. My lawn is a mess. So I'll be watching your videos over and over. Because I know nothing. But want to start fixing my lawn.

      Donna, thanks for saying that; you are the exact type of person that I hope to be able to help at least a little bit with every video. Hope you have a great Thanksgiving!

    Great demonstration. I have a sandy loam soil here on Long Island and found spoon feeding fertilizer to work better as well as having to watering more often during the Summer to keep my KBG going.

    • @TurfMechanic
      @TurfMechanic  Před rokem +2

      Sounds about right to me, plus those kbg roots are some of the shallower roots of most grass types...just another reason to start pumping more natural sources of N 😁 Feather meal? Alfalfa? Blood meal? That will allow more time between fert sessions.

    You should look into jadam wetting agent. You can use it in any situation you need it, as it is all natural and fairly easy to make. It also is only 1$ a liter and you use 1 Oz a gallon.
    Also jadam sulfur is a natural fungicide, while jadam herbal solution is a natural pest repellent (no chemicals that harm kids or yourself) they are really helpful in gardening, with powdery mildew and bugs, I suggest you check it out!
    I look forward to more renovation videos and how you fix up this lawn!

    What is the plan for raising CEC? Off the top of my head I would guess humic/carbon and AZOMITE, maybe some peat?

    • @TurfMechanic
      @TurfMechanic  Před rokem +1

      That plan is yet to be determined but my instincts tell me I'll probably amend each "zone" I work on as i go with compost, azomite, biochar, and humic acids then enter an eventual pattern of core aerating a couple times a year as I have in the past. Topdressing the lawn after each core aeration with rich soil each time. I fertilize with natural products usually so that will incrementally help as well. When I do a lab soil test I'll see my current cec so I'll have to do an updated lab test later next year to see if I've improved.

    Your going to be going all organic correct? Still using lawn box in the new lawn?

    • @TurfMechanic
      @TurfMechanic  Před rokem +1

      Yep, although I'll probably use some chems to kill off some of the common grasses before installing the new lawn.
