  • I said good-bye to my Silver Baby… And picked up a Yellow Piece of Art!
    This Flight Chops episode shares the whole Behind the Scenes process of what goes into the best paint jobs in General #Aviation !
    This Airplane does NOT deserve to look this good!
    - That's one of Jonathan's trade mark jokes, but it is true! - Evoke fixed a lot of little boo-boos I assumed we'd have to live with. It is truly amazing work, and it totally exceeded my expectations of having an "honorary Yellow Bird" scheme to fit in with the warbird trainer fleet.
    I am proud to be a member of the Canadian Aviation Museum (formerly CH2A).
    They are a not-for-profit organization that anybody can visit, and (almost) any pilot can join and fly the planes. Please consider sharing their link, visiting the museum in Windsor, and/or sending a small donation to help them keep our historic warbirds flying!

    If you’re looking to get the best paint job for your Van’s Aircraft, definitely hit them up!

    More insights Jonathan added while replying to comments after this was published:
    "Our design team is well versed in helping builders with their design process and finding a suitable paint shop that meets the requirements of your project. Our design team will work with you to create a unique design, select colors, help with interior color selections, and find a paint shop (or assist if you want to paint yourself). We provide design specs and paint masks or stencils as shown to help with your paint layout and it's very affordable at a flat rate of $1600 for that service. Plus you get me as a phone a friend when you need some quick tips! Our design team designs all aircraft types, not just for what we paint. We only paint about 1 out of every 15 we design. "

    I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 20 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. This gives you some idea of what Oshkosh judges look for... but a fancy paint job won't fool the judges if the plane isn't first rate.

    Jonathan and his team have now done two of our homebuilt airplanes. The first (five years ago) still looks as good as the day it left Gadsden. The other (two months ago) is an order of magnitude better than the first. I didn’t think it was possible, but the Evoke team just keeps getting better and better. The novelty of seeing the plane(s) just never wears off. Frankly, that feeling is priceless.

    I appreciate the education about all of the prep work needed to make the paint look its best! Still... I do love a polished aluminum aircraft! There's an F-86 Sabre (NX188RL) in the Chicago area that always impresses me with its shine, and the restored B-29 Doc seems to have a few square miles of polished aluminum that gleams in the sun. It might be fun to document the steps and effort required to maintain this sort of finish.

    I have begged Johnathan to paint my rare Aerobatic Bonanza but won't touch anymore certified airplanes. RV's and they're sheet metal (flush rivets) are way better to paint than a plane with a bunch of rivets sticking up. This video certainly shows his quality, absolutely beautiful airplanes, congratulations!

  • @goatflieg
    @goatflieg Před 5 měsíci +2

    Evoke has established itself as one of the very best aircraft paint shops in the country, if not the world. Jonathan's enthusiasm is contagious; it's good to love your work especially something as demanding as show quality paint. I wondered if you had any paint codes from the CAM fleet, but bringing swatches home was even better. I'll never forget the first official big reveal at Windsor just before OSH... and how I almost scooped you on the OSH reveal! That was very cool "taxi flight" in the Piper M600. And I'd forgotten that Jason Seavolt's RV-8 was at Evoke at the same time as the RV-14; always a good surprise to see a friend's airplane in a video. I promise not to look for the flaws the next time I see the airplane. My airplane wasn't quite finished (they never are) when I sold it, but I still take pride in the paint job I did on it. Flawed? Yes. Many. You better believe it. But I managed to create the paint scheme I'd dreamed of for decades without resorting to any decals, and that will always feel pretty cool. And in a few more months I'll have an accurate model of it, including the cockpit. Stay Tuned!

    This craftsmanship is stunning. Having back in1997 had a cheapo shop paint our group-owned182, we had to live with the consequences for 21 years until we could afford a decent job. After a few years the red stripes had started fading to pink and we found that the stripes were at different heights on each side of the aircraft! The difference when we had a far better company paint the aircraft was amazing - since 1997 UV resistant lacquers have appeared and the paint shop we employed in 2019 was selected because they mainly paint bizjets whose customers will accept nothing less than the best. A super paint job is not cheap but I m sure that part of its cost will be added to the value of the aircraft when you eventually resell and meanwhile, it'll look fantastic on the ramp wherever you go. .

  • @tds456
    @tds456 Před 5 měsíci +3

    No an Evoke job but I got to see one of similar quality recently. There is some amount of difference between the paint + decals and the fully butted paint with properly done clear coat. Especially on a bright sunny day, just having such a clean shine is unbelievable.

My Cheetah was painted in 2005 with the N# removed from the three colored strips (a lot of work) and it has held up extremely well after nearly 3000 hours and 19 years on it BUT for only $5200! A whole four seat airplane! We had some restoration work and ceramic coating applied a few years back for $2k. She is so pretty for a 47 year old bird. Thanks Steve.

    What was the final amount of work hours they put into the paint job? If it's really in the 500-600 hour range said in the video, that makes for a pretty cheap hourly rate if the final price was just $30,000. (I would have assumed AT LEAST double for such a professional job.)

  • @adamdickson608
    @adamdickson608 Před 5 měsíci +1

    Is the following correct? Alclad layer on the skin is destroyed in places by the 320-grit sanding, but this is more-or-less compensated for from a corrosion-resistance point of view by the alodining step (and the paint itself)? Great looking result on both planes!

    • @EvokeAviation
      @EvokeAviation Před 5 měsíci +3

      The alclad layer is not the safest bet for protecting the airplane from corrosion for the long term. Lots of scratches and marring from the build in addition to contaminants from flying the airplane will erode the alclad layer. We sand the surface not to remove the alclad but to remove contaminants and give ourselves a mechanical scratch on the aluminum for better adhesion to the paint. After the surface is sanded we acid etch as a final step to ensure a perfectly clean surface, then apply Alodine which acts as the fresh layer of corrosion protection. Epoxy primer is applied within 48 hours after Alodine coating for best adhesion!

      Totally fair. For me it wasn't an option due to how many logos I have on the plane. They are impossible to polish around; also, the big upfront cost does tend to increase resale value, and thus it is likely to be a solid ROI.
