- How To CURE BROWN DIATOM ALGAE In Saltwater Aquariums
In this video we take a look at brown diatom algae in saltwater aquariums and the ways to prevent it and also get rid of it. Brown diatom algae is actually pretty common in most new marine aquariums and normally goes away on its own once the saltwater tank has matured. If not we can do some simple things like reducing light and nutrient to starve the brown diatom algae and if that doesn't work we can also use herbivores like snails to eat the the diatom algae.

Thanks so much for this information, I was starting to panic because my aquarium has been running for about four weeks and it's cycled well and now everything is covered in this brown Algae and you've put my mind at rest. Thanks again.
Well, I'm a bit more calm after watching this video. Thank you.
My experience is with freshwater tanks that you did cove. I agree "wait out" is what is needed but you need the self-disciple to leave it and from experience then it seems to clear very quickly.
Proper useful information , thank you.
I used Seachem Phosguard, followed correct doses for tank size, cleared up diatom bloom in 2 days without affecting the parameters and all corals and fish are happy.
Thanks for post. I will be trying that start later today.
Absolutely correct! Seachem phosguard is the best cure for diatoms
How much do we use for 30 gallon tank
@@xwvwj2610 I put about 3-4 tablespoons in a bag in the pump area
It leaches aluminum into the water. GFO is a better option.
You are amazing. You say everything in a way that keeps people calm and hopeful :)
Thank you! 😊
Thank you, a lot of helpful tips.
I listened to this guy the brown algae algae didn't decrease and now my goldfish look small pieces of shit floating around my tank. Beautiful.
That's cause a lot of his info is wrong, like light impacting it. He also keeps referring to it as an algae and it's not an algae at all.
good video. thanks
how old was this tank then and what specifically did you do? my tank has been running for 2 months and am experiencing exactly this. had a little success using vinegar dose but it quickly came back. only running a skimmer 30 gals
Thank you 😊
Thank YOU for Watching!
top info.....
My reef aquarium has been up for 15+ years and recently had a large breakout of diatoms. I use only RO water for top off but had some cyano on a large rock that I couldn’t completely get rid of. Made the mistake of taking the large live rock out and did a quick rinse under tap water, drip dried and put it back in the aquarium. Couple weeks later the diatoms covered most of the rock, sand, walls and pumps. My question is how would you go about removing the diatoms in an established tank with lps, sps, anemones and fish? Not sure if I can starve them with blackout and no food for 4-5 days.?. I have a handful of turbo snails and my water quality is all in range. Thanks
Hey - great video thanks. Can this also be common on a 4/5 month old tank? I seem to have an outbreak.
Can happen in mature tanks as well but its harder to get rid of
How many hours a day for light? Not affecting corals
Sir can i use osaka2000 for tiger barbs fish?
Hi
Could you tell me where could I get the snails you’re referring to I live in the uk
Thanks
Should be available in any good aquarium shop
thanks for uploading i have a 3 week old tank and the diatoms have started....i thought it may be brown cyano or similar as there appears to be bubbles coming off/resting on top of a few of the brown patches...i have 2 clowns and added a very healthy dose of colony at the same time they went in along with using live sand.
Mines cleared up now completely
@@EverydayAquarist that's awesome, cant wait for the next video...thanks again for uploading.
I have the exact same setup and started to get an outbreak after week 7, but week 3 with Clowns
Do you have a video on fresh water tanks
I do yes
Hi I have brown Algee on my glass can I remove it ? And leave the brown the rocks and sand?
how do beat this algae in a bare-bottom how will the green algae and such grow and out compete the brown
My new saltwater tank has this got w snails today and the clownfish I have is doing just fine
should i use phosguard
Thx
Is this dangerous or bad for corals and fish?
It’s a pain in the arse in all new marine tanks
Yeah mine was sparkling now it’s horribly brown
You have your lights on during the cycling process? Did you properly start the cycling process by seeding bacteria? I am new to the hobby but I learned these 2 important steps early on before even putting water in my tank.
Well ik i have and i still got this algea so just be happy you dont have it and stop acting like youre smarter than everyone
@@jdub2722 Well damn... .. .Who hurt you ?
What is your experience with Mollies? I saw one on the video. Do they eat the Micro Algae?
A little bit
Do you think dosing with phosphates could cause a bloom of this? I know right after I dose the levels get high but by 24 hours they are gone! How about using vibrant?
Could be, I have never used vibrant
turn off the lights . I did my cycle no lights low temps to keep algae away.
Can I use hydrogen per Oxide?
Are you running a protein skimmer ?
No
I think this is dino
Hey I know I’m a late comment but I have a question I’ve had my saltwater tank for almost two years and I still have the algae I’ve tried cleaning all of my inserts, and lowering the light in the tank and it still won’t go away do you have any tips on how to kill it
Must be high silicates or nutrients in your tank water
Try watching a video with a product called vibrant aquarium cleaner, I have a bottle coming tomorrow, supposed to work really well.
What temperature would you recommend for your macro algae in a display tank?
Same as a regular saltwater tank, between 24c-26c
God bless everyone who sees this I hope you have a great rest of your day and a great day tomorrow God loves you ❤️🙏🏽🤍🕊🤍
My guppies are eating it off the glass. I assume that’s ok?
They like it it's, fine for them
Will it hurt my clowns? I've heard the fish need certain lights for certain times so I don't know how to do the lights with limiting it for the diatoms. Still panicking lol
Valuable info starts at 3:32
I'm either growing diatoms from absolute scratch or my dry rock has brought diatom cells into my tank and I'm probably gonna grab a snail and a hermit crab to deal with the rocks and glass.
My tank has been running for awhile I had a salinity situation and by that I mean I never knew about it and so I was doing had I finally figured it out and my tank has been strong for 5 months now but this stuff has started taking over all of a sudden very fast in the morning I’ll clean my clean and by 7th hour my glass will be filled of diatoms again I’m so frustrated I’m thinking of selling my tank it’s eating my flower anemones I have 2 but the diatoms are become long and hairy and growing onto my rock flowers and they’re losing their tentacles and I can’t handle watching my wildlife suffer in freaking out and need a fast solution
I don't see anything horrible in this look.
I was shocked when I saw a Molly in a saltwater tank but I realized mollies can be adjusted to saltwater 😂
Mmhmm yummy. My aquarium is brown. It's also only like two months old. Lol
I put some pleco fish in my tank and guess what no more brown algae ..
Would you recommend me getting pleco fish for my 35 gallon tank?
@@careymacskitchen8309
Yes you should get one but only feed them twice a week because if u feed them daily they will not keep on cleaning. i feed the sliced cucumber ..
Hi I have diatoms I think, my water is very cloudy from cleaning the glass all the time, skimmer is full of brown water, socks are brownish orange my tank is 169Gal or 640L have three Green Chromis and a few snails, plus Elegance coral Hammer and Torch all quite small and seem happy but I am guessing the no light option is not doable ? should I just wait it out? I'm worried about the corals, tank is new about 6 weeks old, Phosphates are 0 Nitrate 0 and everything else is good, appreciate any suggestion thank you.
Having 0 for nitrate and phosphates is bad because ur hammers, elegance coral and torch like a bit of dirty water also have very low nutrients can cause dinoflagellates which is way harder to get rid of then diatoms.
It feeds on silicates and them boulders are not ment for salt water tanks diatoms feed on try silicates remover
Why is the Aquascaping so bad? Was that on purpose? Serious question.
Yup. That looks very odd
😂😂
That looks like dino
Salty man Reviews ^
Thats not diatoms thats Dinos!
New aquascape please
2 mexican turbo snails and all gone
Great aren't they
@@EverydayAquarist sure are :)
These are clearly DINOFLAGELLATES NOT Diatoms
The constant movement in this video is annoying.
Shake your head in the opposite direction and it should stabilize
😂
