    Have you ever seen a railroad modeled in black & white? Join us for a look at Steve Redeker's On30 Hetch Hetchy railroad. The real Hetch Hetchy railroad was a 68 mile standard gauge railroad built in early part of the 20th Century to construct the O'Shaughnessy Dam that created the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir which has been providing drinking water to San Francisco, CA for over a hundred years.
    This model railroad uses battery powered motive power, so it's running on dead rail. Did I mention, it's modeled in black and white? What's more, Steve's personal connection to this railroad makes his model of it even more endearing, with more character than you can shake a stick at. It's one of the best model railroading stories I've ever heard.

    This guy give me a scant sense of hope that maybe I am not to old to still jump out of my armchair and start nailing together some wood someday. I like his approach. The 52J story is what makes this the greatest hobby in the world with the greatest people in it!

    Steve, you presented to us a big part of your life, a railroad, a boy scout camp you spent summers at possibly, experiences with your father and son, and of course your wife. You did it in a charming nostalgic way. I've seen alot of Jack Burgess videos, he's a perfectionist as to structures and rolling stock at a very particular time on the YVRR. What you and he have in common is the research in photo form that you utilize. The difference is that Jack uses them as a reference for model construction, and you actually present your photos to tell the story as a back drop with the modeling of the scenes and trains in the foreground as you take us on a stroll down your memory lane. One of these days I will have something in common with you as I will be modeling a much shorter version of the ACL as it ran through the county I've lived it since 1975, the similarity being its gone now, converted entirely to a bike trail. When I was 20 I took a job at a lumber yard that had a siding for box cars for studs and plywood and bulkhead flat cars for long length 2x4's. It all has to be done from memory. Once again, great presentation!

    I think that in some ways model railways are a reflection of their builders - this is clearly a lovely model railway built by and presented by a lovely guy. Fun and a little quirky (and the railway is cool too)!

    I admire Steve's approach to building his layout. Build what you can do at your own pace and within your own skill set and who knows?. . . you may even pick up some new skills and ideas along the way. Great video John!

    On30 is usually used to model narrow gauge trains. This is an interesting use of On30 to model standard gauge trains. The "30" indicates 30" between the rails while standard gauge is 56-1/2" between the rails. The original was standard gauge.

    Wonderful model and great video. I've shared this with people interested in Camp Mather. (BTW, the current understanding is that we should say math-er, not MAY-ther. The second pronunciation would be an insult to the founder of our National Parks.) Can the model be visited? Have any arrangements been made for the day when the model might have to be relocated? -- to a museum, or?

    • @patlatorres7000
      @patlatorres7000 Před 8 měsíci

      Yes, there are at least two books on the Hetch Hetchy Railroad, "Hetch Hetchy and its Dam Railroad" is the older and there is a newer book on the railroad as well. As Steve mentioned, the California State Railroad Museum library has MANY photos of this railroad (and many other California railroad subjects).

    I don't quite understand, If the real Hetch Hetchy RR was 4' 8 1/2" gauged, why did you use On30 to re-produce? With all the stuff that is available in HO, I guess I would have used HO! However, it is your RR!!!
