I don't have social media, but felt shocked to just now realise I read with a kindle, run with a podcast, do chores with an audiobook, study with a computer, and "relax" with youtube.. - I tell myself I'm being productive, but the thought of doing any of these without a device.. ouch! This is clearly a discomfort I need to address - thank you x

You're literally one of the very few channels I like to watch, I barely use CZcams, but I always look for reviews on books I want to read, I was doubting about this one but I think I've just found the book that I'll read this week.

The Buddha praised "fewness of desires" a lot and the value of that hasn't changed a bit. A bit of restraint when it comes to social media can have great benefits

    Week One:
Spend one hour a day alone without your devices
Long walk or hobby without a digital device
Where will you go for the hour to find solitude?
What time of the day will you go there?
    Week Two:
    Stop using devices during downtime
    1. Demanding activities is more restorative than passive consumption. (By expending energy you gain energy. You have to spend money to make money )
=Write down two demanding activities, like exercising and learning a new hobby
    1. Using skills to produce valuable things in the physical world is more stimulating and rejuvenating than spending time in the digital world.
=Write down two skill-based activities that produce physical things, like cooking or gardening
    1. Real-world structured social interrelations are more enjoyable and rewarding than social interaction on devices.
=Write down two real-world social activities
    Week Three
    Be an anti-texter
    1. Turn off notifications
    2. Select three times a day that you will respond to the massages
    3. Call them is better than sending infinite massages

I find the summaries are neutral information that if my curiosity is piqued helps me to chose.
Getting the pdf bundle of summaries and considering several will tell you which books you want to read entirely.

    • @RthereNEusernames

I'd say just read the books instead of watching these silly summaries. This is just this guy's perspective of the book. You may interpret it in a different way and gain some other insights. The same is true for all the books on this channel. They might give you a good idea of what to expect, but in my opinion you get way more out of actually reading books instead of just the summaries.

6:35 this is the only part of the book I disagree with. If you have a long driving commute, calling and driving while having an intense conversation leads to distracted driving, especially during rush hour when you have to be conscious of stopping and adjusting asap when needed. If it's a public transport commute, having a long conversation on your phone is really inconsiderate of the other passengers around you, who have to listen to you for the entire hour+ commute.

The only way to avoid it is to not buy a 'smart' phone. It's addictive like smoking or alcoholism. Cutting down doesn't work because the forces at work will win in the long run. Technology is just improved means to an unimproved end.

I would re-read Deep Work rather than this new work based on this review.
Also: if you have a long commute you have an opportunity to have alone time and for example gain an appreciation for classical music. Don't waste such a gift by making phone calls which (even hands free) raise the risk of a car accident.
