  • This is a how-to video of upgrading a 10 year old "blue box" Athearn Ready To Roll SD40-2 which came "DCC Ready" when it was introduced in 2015. This video demonstrates the installation of a Loksound 5 DCC decoder with a dual Scale Sound System speaker set and LED light upgrades.

Nice work! I have the SSS speakers in most of my sound-equipped locos. They are so efficient, I found it necessary to turn down the overall volume. ESU tends to run the default volume "wide open." I'd suggest about 50%. Also, some roads make the top (cab) light run as a MARS. I don't know if ICG did this, but the decoder sfx can make that happen.

How much lighter would you say the locomotive got after losing those weights? I wish Athearn would do upgraded chassis like they did with the SD40T-2/SD45T-2 series locos.

Thank you, while I did not do a pre- and post- weight assessment of the locomotive, the weight loss is negligible. The front weight is probably less than an ounce and the rear may be 1 ounce. While the speakers to add weight back to the locomotive, they are certainly not the weight of the lead. Overall, you will not notice.
