If these "Forced to Choose" videos have taught me anything, it's that I needn't even bother turning the microphone on. SO many people just do not listen. I see people getting upset or actually offended that their favorite knife isn't in the video. That I've somehow "sold out" because I did not pick or show what they like. I think these videos could be half as long if I didn't have to constantly repeat what it is I'm doing here. And even doing THAT, people STILL can't grasp it.
The "Forced To Choose" videos have NOTHING AT ALL with recommending knives! Absolutely nothing. Zip. Zero. Zilch. The Forced to Choose videos are about looking at what you have in front of you...all the knives you LIKE...and having to analyze what you need, or what works best for you on a subjective, personal level. Throughout the series, some of my favorite items did not get picked. I really do not understand why this is so difficult to understand.
The next big thing, is people freaking out because a certain knife was not seen. What about this?? Where is that?? Such and such wasn't in there, so I call BS!! What...the hell?
Exactly HOW MANY knives do you ACTUALLY think I need? They are just going to sit on a shelf. Because 75% of the time when I am in the woods, I am using something that I am reviewing. I'm not even using my favorite stuff! Yet people somehow feel slighted that I knife I used to have, or a knife they think is the best wasn't in the video. I can't USE all those knives folks! And I'm not a miilionaire. Not even close. In order to keep getting things to review for you, I have to let things go. And I'd rather a good knife be in someone else's being used than sitting on a shelf collecting dust. Let's hit the big ones...
WHERE IS THE BK9?!?! I stopped using the BK9 the day I got Jess-X. Which was years ago. Remember, I designed that knife because I loved the size of the BK9, But I wanted something different. So I made it. I sold it to a friend who really wanted it, and was going to actually USE it.
WHERE IS THE TAHOMA FIELD KNIFE?!?!?! It's a great knife. But I used others more. And when Bryan Stevens had his TFK stolen out of his truck, I asked Andy Tran if he would mind if I gave mine to Bryan (because Andy gave me mine). Because it was Bryan's FAVORITE knife. I'd rather Bryan have it and appreciate it, than st on my shelf.
WHERE IS THE EL CHETE?!?!! I even put it in the video. The El Chete is with Tac right now. I asked if he wanted to borrow mine to review it.
(From the last video) WHERE IS THE HONEY BADGER?!?!?! The HB was one one my favorites...no doubt. But I have a friend who loved it more. And when he was in between jobs, he was forced to sell some stuff he didn't want to get rid of, one thing being his Honey Badger. Probably his favorite knife. I have lots of knives. So I packaged my Honey Badger up and surprised him with it. Sometimes it's better to give than receive. I'll get one from the next run.
WHERE IS THIS KNIFE OR THAT KNIFE?!?!? Again, outside of the knives I review, I can only use so many. And I'm going to use what works best for me. So I'll sell stuff I don't use so I can get MORE stuff to do more videos....which is my job.
Stop taking shit SO personally! And LISTEN to what I'm telling you in the video. As I said, the FTC series has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with recommending what to buy. Nothing at all. I don't know how it is even possible to make that any clearer than I already have.
PREPAREDMIND101 Chris your putting yourself out there for better or worse, people like your videos and respect your opinion that's why they ask where's this and that, and why not this, and why not that. It's because they actually want to hear the why....and the where... the alternative to this is nobody watching and nobody giving a shit... so spending half a day killing 10 paragraphs on why people shouldn't ask or enquire is plain dumb..... man get your shit together your not here to please the masses your here with your experience and opinion which people are genuinely interested in so complaining about it is contradictory and going to put yourself into the light of someone who believes their shit don't stink. I remember your first videos alot more humble and alot more patient with your viewer's. Also to viewers should be more respectful of your knowledge and experience.
+William Russell No, It's simply something that I've just been noticing a LOT lately, and it's not like you said that "people want to hear why". It's that nobody is listening. My videos are often longer than they need to be because I explain my thought process in detail. But then I have to answer countless comments (this is a problem that has been becoming exponentially more frequent) where people either have either made snapshot judgements about what they THINK the video is about and then want to argue about how I'm wrong, or make great leaps of assumptions of something within the video and get upset about it Such as: I SEE A VIDEO ABOUT KNIVES-------------------------------->VIDEOS TELL ME WHAT'S THE BEST--------------------------------------->I DON'T SEE THE ONE I LIKE------------------------------>HE DIDN'T SHOW OR CHOOSE MY FAVORITE, SO HE JUST CALLED ME AN ASSHOLE!". Meanwhile, I'm trying to teach something about analytical choice, the video has nothing to do with what I think you should buy, and I've spent 1/3 if the video time explaining myself carefully.
The comment I replied to right before yours, was someone giving me a laundry list of all the features of as particular Nitecore tactical flashlight and why it's better than the Olight my video was about. Here's what he did:
I SEE A VIDEO ABOUT A "TACTICAL" FLASHLIGHT----->TITLE SAYS "AS CLOSE TO PERFECT AS I'VE FOUND"----->I WILL NOW SEEK OUT A BETTER, MORE "TACTICAL" FLASHLIGHT AND ARGUE.
That would be all well and good....IF the video wasn't full of me saying things like how Flashlights are such a personal subjective choice, how my opinion was based on what I personally like and look for, and how my assessment of the flashlight had absolutely nothing at all to do with whether or not it was "the best TACTICAL flashlight"
See, I at least understand the nuances of subjective likes and dislikes. I know that I cannot tell a few hundred thousand people what will work for them. So I go out of my way to explain in great detail about how my videos reflect my personal thoughts and preferences. But at least 1/3 of viewers who watch review videos might as well mute the sound on the computer.
My recent video "The most important survival item nobody cares about" had a lot of that. Maybe not TOO much... But there were plenty of comments where people started reading the title of the video, apparently got sleepy halfway through the sentence and just settled on "Oh, this video is about the most important survival item ever, let's see what it is. A tourniquet?? Use a shoelace... Fire is way more important!"

I know it looks like overreacting from your point of view. Understand I have the birds-eye view. I have an app that feeds me the newest comments streaming in from over 1000 videos. You'll have "trends" of comments. The current trend is "not hearing a single word I say and arguing about what I assume you were going to say".
To me... It's a monumental time waster because I'm not content with just plopping out generic videos... I'm trying to get people to think in new directions.
Bro it's okay! there will always be butthurt little 18 year olds out there complaining. Youre videos are great, don't be phased by stupid comments ok? keep up the good work! love your reviews!
PREPAREDMIND101 no doubt that would wear anyone down but most people from all of your subscribers come here for your knowledge and appreciate everything you take the time to review and go over.
As for me I have always appreciated these reviews probably more than any other reviewer so a huge big thank you and keep up the good work!
PREPAREDMIND101 the thing with CZcams these days is that everybody has an opinion, but nobody’s allowed to have one (or at least speak it out loud). I may not agree with everything you say and I may have different priorities and preferences sometimes, but if I didn’t value your opinion you wouldn’t be the first channel I usually go to for knife reviews. If anything you are generally the most specific in clarifying the difference between facts & specs & your personal opinion and preference (which is sorely lacking in general across the platform), so I have no complaints. Trolls will be trolls no matter what you do. If you weren’t doing something right you wouldn’t be where you are today. 👍
Finally got to take my Vengeful 1 into the woods this weekend to setup a deer blind, and clear away some brush. Awesome knife! I love it! It just breezed through light brush, and small trees. The only problem is that is was so much fun to use that I may have cleared away more brush and shooting lanes than I needed to. Fantastic design. Definitely my first pick for a large knife.

If you need a break from the FTC series that's OK, but please don't end it! You can still do axes/hatchets, full size machetes, saws, digging tools, sharpeners(home/basecamp, field, powered and non-powered. That's just to name a few. Anyway thanks for the video and keep em coming.

Hi Chris . Great vid and I'm very surprised the parang made the final cut! The parang is an original tool that the Malaysians use for all tropical rainforest growth, its used from tall weeds and grasses to tree trunks and its really the "King of blades" for outdoor woods use hands down. I am a convert, and will not use anything else but a original Malaysian wild PARANG!
If you're allowed to of course you should pick your knife. I actually love all of your choices. When I tried this I didn't have as many large blades as you do. I went Kabar Kukri machete as my budget, my Esee Junglass because of versatility, and finally instead of my El chete which I love, I chose my GransFors Bruk, small forest axe. Yes I know it's an axe but the El Chete is heavier, and more unwieldy.
I use the Condor Bushcraft Parang all the time in my yard and woods for clearing brush, cutting out saplings and harvesting fatwood. The best thing I like about the parang is it's blade grind which gives it chopping power and durability that other large knives don't have. I have no fears of chopping saplings close to the ground and accidentally hitting a rock hidden under the dirt (as does occasionally happen); the parang shrugs it off and keeps going.
I knew it again! I am basically just picking the three out of your pile that you would be able to do the most tasks with and I am coming up with the same results you are. When you eliminate in your mind the ones that are the most badass but not as practical considering the other choices that have been made, that's what you come up with.
I was hoping the T field knife would be here, but I completely understand, I've shortened my "knife stock" this last year. Thanks for these pick 3 videos Chris! Hopefully I can make a video here shortly with my choices.

PREPAREDMIND101 have you ever thought about trying one of those Miller Brothers Blades? They are the most sick and devastating knives I've ever seen. Plus, most are made from the Z-Wear PM steel...which is supposed to make cpm 3v look like 1075. However, I would not know first hand cause I'll never be able to afford one, but I would love one of their M-8.

J Rapp I've actually got to put my hands on a Miller Bros gladius type blade. It was pretty nice. Not a bad price either for the size of the blade. It had a 3point shoulder harness that was really made well too. Had I not just placed a large kydex order this week I'd probably have to order one out of impulse now that I'm thinking about it.

I’ve got an idea. You pick three favourite knives. Belt knives, folders,choppers... then you give away all of them. Lol
You should try to build a INCH bag,. That would force you to choose from all your gear, items in each category that not only you like the most, but also that complement each other and work together to provide everything you would need. Daves 10 C's, the 5 tool rule, the 10 essentials and all the checklists you can download vs the weight and capacity of your pack.
I don't need Dave's little rulebook. I don't think I could make an INCH bag. I'm too gear happy.
G'day Chris, I reckon these two 'Forced To Choose' vids have been the most enjoyable offerings from you in recent memory because they compel one to think and prioritize functionality, versatility etc. Spookily, I was in lock-step with you on the first video; sameo, sameo. In this vid I've got the Vengeful and the Condor Parang... haven't been able to source the new Ka-Bar down here yet. Often I've looked at my collection and thought: 'Out of my favorite blades, what are the ones I 'could' do without; man, that's a tough call. I've got 'history' with all my precious knives and no matter what their cost they are still as important to me as they were when they were purchased; even if I don't use some of them as often as I used to.
There are some great knives I still can't justify, like your USD$35 Kershaw Camp 10 is still, unbelievably, over AUD$100 !! So as much as I want one, it's out of the question.
Anyway, mate, great videos and I'll be on the edge of my seat discovering what Mr Jackalope and Mr Tactical do when faced with a similar conundrum. Cheers, BH

Well done, Chris. I like and follow your logic. HOWEVER, you're not done. Now you should choose 3 from all of the final sets of three you did earlier. So, you would wind up with 3 final knives to compliment each other if you only had 3 knives for all of your chores.
As an aside, you should also tag Jacob at ThePreppersBunkerOutdoors. That young man has a bunch of big knives/choppers, too. Yes, I agree, there's no end to guys with lots of big knives...ha.

Def sad that the Tops el chete and the bk9 didn't make it, but if you don't have it what can you do. Anyway, already ordered "the choppa" and can't wait to try it out.
The real question is that if the Bark River knife is your first choice, why isn't it being produced? We are left to scrounge on ebay for an overpriced used one. So is it really "worth" 2x to 3x the original price? It's hard to justify using a knife at that price point vs just "collecting"

My only chopper is Fox Pathfinder kukri. It's made from Nitro B (a good stainless steel) and has a good handle. It's $150 and imo it's worth every bit of it. The sheath could be better but it's not a cheap piece of crap.
I know this is a very old video but I’m doing some blade research currently. I was curious why the Zombie tools Parabellum wasn’t in this group. Or do you not really consider it a good all around blade for survival/bushcraft. Thanks in advance of you see this and comment!
There's not a better one tool option then a good parang. I have never used the Bushcraft parang by condor so I can't speak on that one. Absolutely 100% if you want a super tool get a village parang by condor also and mod the blade shape & grind, handle design and make a wooden or kydex sheath with a dangler an you got something IMO. If you carry a 3 tool system put a mora Bushcraft and SAK Trekker with the awl, saw, gut blade and normal spear point blade and its nothing you can't do in the SE United States. Great video Brother!

I don't understand why you would need 3 large knives. Even one large chopper isn't necessary most of the time. A folding saw, a good 3in to 5in knife and a tomahawk will do more for you, and will be lighter and use up less space.
Many fine blades there. Just a short comm. about rapping the handle with sticky tape or something, I use it on my B.R. Bolo Grossa 7 and one more I don't remember the name though.(Bolo also lineyard locked with rubber til needed)

I like these videos, Chris, but it doesn't make sense to me, to decide on the knives as if you were making a kit of only big knives and you have to cover all of your bases with those knives.
I think you should just pick the overall best knives in each category (large chopper/small bushcraft/ mid camp knife) to ultimately build up a kit that covers all of the bases together at the end of this series
TackStash779 fucking AAAA. He DOES do that this video is FOR FUNNNNNNN. and if we do what you're saying ( build a kit) then he's picked his 3 favorite folders, 3 favorite belt knives, and 3 favorite choppers. Now he can pair them all and he'll have 3 perfect sets of knives.

Very cool 👍🏻 if you had to choose a large knife/machete under 100 dollars that was primarily used to chop and split what would it be? I am in a marsh so an axe is kinda pointless for me. I usually carry a machete (sp-53) , a belt knife (LT Wright Genesis), a neck knife sometimes( mora Eldris), and a saw(Corona). Or better yet which tools would you choose for a set like this? Thanks👍🏻

I don't get why the Kabar Cutlass Machete gets overlooked so much, especially when compared to the Kabar Kukri Machete. I've had the Cutlass Machete for years and use it for cutting willow and mesquite on my property and for $50-55, I think it's an awesome value.

I like the big shining mountain bowie the best by far but i just love big old bowie knives.
If it was 3V I'd drool all over it. It's Mike's fault. You can't offer all the best super steels and make me OK with A2. Even if A2 is great it's a mental hurdle that even I struggle with. Plus A2 doesn't like me. Some say O1 stains easier, but for me it's always been A2. And that's a problem for someone with Knife OCD.
Good video, good concept, and something I think most knife guys find themselves having to do eventually.

How does a genuine kukri stand against these, seems like the weight forward head would chop better, pair with a scandivex bush knife and silky saw and ur set.
Hey does anyone know why Bark River no longer makes the Vengeful 1 cpm 3v?
Really like the blade on your vengeful knife. Handle looks good to but it really needs a guard of some sort to keep your hands from slipping on to the blade.
If you look at all the other knives they all have something to prevent that. I would buy it in a heartbeat if it had a guard.
+R.D. K No it doesn't. I don't know why people think they need a guard unless you plan on stabbing stuff. A guard goes against the POU oof the design.

I thought about this as well, but I guess the BK9 is more of an all round camp knife and not so much a dedicated chopper as the knives featured here.
Condor Bushcraft Parang is my main choppa

My chopper of choice would be the RMJ Tactical Eagle Talon tomahawk.

Woodland Warrior according to what Chris said, he no longer owns one. It's all about personal preference, but I would take the bk2, bk7, and bk9 over any of those knives, including the super steels. From personal experience, I believe they perform better. However, like Chris says, "it's all subjective."
