The great thing about comps is they expose areas of the game to work on, mostly mental, which u may not discover in normal practice. But u learn from them and add them to ur practice and put them to test on the next one. Chin up mate, keep grinding and learning and get after it on the next one 👊

Hey James, I’ve been watching you for the last 3yrs or so, around the same time as I have with Shiels and Finch.
What I have learned is that your journey and therefore your content and delivery is completely authentic and organic compared (in my opinion) to others. My point is I am now sooo into your progression and development because I am completely on board with the way you break stuff down ….. which is why I am championing you and the journey/ride/ experience that you’re on.
Mate, your swing is poetry, best looking golf swing out there, Can never work out what’s going on when it goes squffy.

You like many other golfers have to conquer the pressure . The pressure you put on yourself to get a good score is crippling your potential . Go out in the next round forget about pressure de clutter your brain from swing thoughts you know how to play . Relax swing from your natural movement and that’ll be far better than overanalysing and heaping the pressure yourself . Basically in a nut shell the only obstacle in the way to you playing great golf is YOU , give yourself the best chance and dump the pressure , relax clear your mind of swing thoughts and all the best ….

The difference I've only really learnt after years away from the game (I struggled with this when I was pro), is the vast difference between focusing on what you want to do (hit this shot at that target) and anything else - like swing thoughts, stock shots or a million other things. It's such a pure thought pattern, almost child like, to see where you want to hit the ball, then try to hit it there (and you've got all the tools to do that). ...another great video, lessons for everyone here, it was a hard day but you learnt stuff and that's always a W.

When you play your best you have a slight arrogance about yourself (that’s a compliment not a dig) sometimes you seem to underestimate yourself and knock yourself down that’s when all of a sudden you have a stinker. Maybe it’s time to embrace the inner gorilla James with your more progressed swing - go out there just swinging with the mindset of f***k it hit ball go find it and hit it again

All individual sports are difficult under pressure. You can't practice these things out of your system. You are either born with it or not. Some people don't even practice that hard. They are just good under pressure. It's hand eye coordination or their nervous system or god given talent or just pure luck... who knows... But golf is a crazy hard game and you are a great player. Please never forget that. We are rooting for you. Go 🦍!

I often joke that the more I practice the worse I perform in club comps. And when you tee off with someone who says they have been on holiday and haven’t touched their club for 2 weeks and/or they are carrying some injury……and they wipe the floor with me.
I have come to the conclusion that expectations are a prime enemy for me at least. I often (not always) play my best rounds when I have good reasons to expect I will underperform and play my worst when I feel positive, have an excellent warm up etc. i also have so many slow starts and then perform better once I realise I have blown it.
I really don’t know how you can replicate the competition nerves outside of competition.

Each level is a learning step. Today it appears you found yourself focused on the result and the process was missing. Tomorrow might be the process but the result doesn’t happen. The sweetness happens when your process produces your desired results- that happens through experience. The truth is you have more than enough game to compete. Now you lean into producing your best results on demand.

At the top level of play..everyone can hit the ball very good..... but you don't have to hit every shot perfect. And everyone is good enough to win... but everyone doesn't win...and some guys win often. The big difference is how well you manage your mental game. Expectations.. negative self talk.. outcome focused... technique focused... these are the things that kill performance.

James. Replay some of those critical holes on the range. U know the course... Ex. Hole 2 450 yards. needs a bleeder fade 320 landing in the right side. If u hit ur target try and hit your scoring approach. If not play a recovery or plan the percentage shot to save par. Keep score. Save 20 min at the end of practice to play and hold urself accountable. It makes each shot valuable and adds pressure. And adds an element of rehearsal for the shots u know ur going to play. Gotta take some time away from block practice.

  • @gmac6871

To get that pressure in practise rounds, you should aim to beat a certain score, and if you don't, send a sum of money, say £5 per round or some other meaningful amount that will grow to something that hurts over time if you don't improve, to Flower or another friend, and you can't touch it for a year. This will definitely put pressure on you to perform. Also because you can't touch it for a year, you won't want it to build up because it could be vital funds you'll want to spend during the coming year. It's an accountability thing for poor performance also. Hope that helps.

Understand the frustrations, clearly you have it in your game, it's just not happening. The mental side of the game, letting shots go once they've happened and staying relaxed is undeniably hard but you've got it. Get what you mean about practising tournaments, your game is at its best when you are relaxed and swinging freely. With regards to shot shaping, i don't think the criticism is that you do it, but rather you seem to change it every shot and it doesn't feel like you've got the stock one to fall back on. When you play Steve is when it's most noticeable as 90 percent of his game is a stock shot and yours can change from extreme cuts, to hooks back to back. Ultimately, you need to find your game where you are most comfortable and dial it in. Plenty of season left and you can definitely compete with your game

  • @el_carbonara

as someone who isn't from the UK bovey is just an amazingly beautiful place.
I think the difficult part is simply having a process and sticking with it, not many people can. Look at sergio in his day, waved his club around a billion times in the most annoying fashion ever and god knows all the crap going through his end during that but it worked for him. For example, it is easy to say I won't think about anything and shape it around by feel but when that starts to not work then it is natural to go back to the opposite end of that spectrum and over think it to the point of multiple swing thoughts and the cycle continues. I think basing a small sample size of a couple holes after the pressure is off from the front 9 isn't a rational approach to solving the root cause.
I feel like you should just stick to what you're doing and just get back to what your swing was in the saffer land, it looked tight there and in control and you had a bit more of a strut I belong here type vibe. I feel like you should sit down with yourself and really focus on what the root cause of the problems were that made you uncomfortable on the day and make some small adjustments on it. Season only just starting and I think having different characters chiming in with advice only makes it worse for you.
I don't feel like golf is unique when it comes to not practising simulating the real event properly. The problem is you simply cant replicate real pressure without being in the moment. I could play 18 every day and take it serious but ill still shit my pants on the first of a regional that matters. All sports I think of suffer the same issues, maybe golf is a little unique in the fact that 1 bad hole could really screw you up.
If you hit driver on the first at bovey and made a bird without fearing the outcome of the season your whole outlook might be completely different, just some food for though :)
I mean well, just trying to offer a different perspective

James, Totally agree, not a good start. Also don’t think Tiger, he’s a freak of nature and as the SKY commentator Radar says “Tiger is a once in a generation player and we don’t currently have one, we will get one, we just don’t have one at the moment”. Difficult as it is, your practise rounds are good, you just need to get into the mindset of repeating it in tournament golf. I was tracking the scores today as I have met some of the guys that are playing from my caddying days. Although they had a better round than you today believe me, you’re as good if not better. If you’re going to think Tiger, two things he always says after a poor round, one is “mom says you’re going have days like these” the other and arguably more importantly is “you have to be patient”. It wasn’t your day so chin up and knock those flags out tomorrow. Leaders were -5 when I last looked.

What’s funny is the short you made about play with your golf is below this video.
Feels are for practice, not tournament rounds.
    Feels come and go.

Seriously James I honestly honestly think you need to decide if you’re playing to win or playing to survive.
You can’t just be a robot and hit the same shot over and over it’s boring to play like that and not sustainable and you didn’t start playing golf to be a robot.
Be creative and trust yourself trust your ability you’ve done enough practice and start to enjoy it.
If money is an issue earn more money first through coaching you need to go to these with a fuck it attitude.
That pro is right it would be more enjoyable to play golf standing on a tee seeing the ideal shot shape and just hitting it?
    I might be wrong.

If you can sort the mental side of the game out, you’ll realise that was the smokescreen all along! They all say, the guys on tour don’t all hit it that great, but they can all grind a score under pressure! Pointless beating hundreds of balls under no pressure to then try and strike it nervous in a comp. It’s two different sports. How do you practice for tournament nerves??? I’m sure you’ll answer that down the line……

James is this not similar to what you learnt with Marcus @ Zen? I know he works on body movement, but his teaching is away from things like wrist angles and tilts etc. etc.

Afraid to say you simply ain't good enough. Top 3 in the order of merit? Winner of play offs? BMW at Wentworth? Yes, it's good to have goals but you're living in a fantasy land I'm sorry to say.

Feel like I've seen this video from you before a few times after a poor performance talking about mindset in the car. Go see a sports psychologist or something or a couple of years down the line you'll be making the same videos. Also, doesnt everyone play better after blowing up on the front nine? You've blown it already, pressure is off.

James I feel like you proved it yourself with the Filthy shot vid, there was a specific intent in flight and result and you exectuted it. You seem to shape the ball well, just playing golf swing with no specfic shot intent or result doesn't seem to work for you.
Your body subconsciously knows how to move to deliver those flights, let it do it. If the only focus is moving the body to produce a "perfect swing" and you get it wrong the shot will be shit.

Mate I think the only thing holding you back is you. You have the tools but lacking that one result. I think when you do get that result you'll leave all this behind and wonder wtf you were struggling with.
