I was surprised to see that Hololive Productions has a wide range of activities, including collaborating with the American Major League Baseball.
I think a lot of things just seemed to have lined up for it. AX weekend, the Dodgers having a very popular JP player in Ohtani, who they have a big 10yr contract with, so the team wants to market itself to a JP audience, baseball being a BIG sport in JP, cover looking for more US based collabs... etc. The press releases framed it as beneficial to both parties.
It seems to have worked really well too. The dodgers came back from being behind, and I saw a dodgers player compare the atmosphere to being in a playoff game. It looks like there were really no downsides to it. The dodgers already do a lot of themed nights anyway by the looks of it, so the regulars are probably used to things like this.

I was shocked at how successful it was. I mean I am sure many Baseball fans had no idea what "those odd cartoon people" on the screen were but the amount of fans that came to support it and make that event a success was really something.

I have to give props to the people behind the scenes on both sides that made this marketing decision. I never in a million years would think something like this would work out as well as it did. I was scratching my head when they announced it, but having seen it now, apart from the merch line thing, this ended up being pretty cool.
Meanwhile we've got company B marketing a similar collab thing using their western branch to western markets but with merch only available in Japan because they don't have a license to sell outside of japan

Longest Merch Line for sure. Their problem was not pushing to integrate into the main stores. They had the supply but cut it off at 11pm, an hour and a half after the game ending.
Also the drones went so nuts two of them crashed
I do feel kinda bad for ppl that waited for and didn't get merch, but if I had had the chance to go it wouldn't have been for the stuff I honestly don't need more of. What i need are happy memories and getting a chance to see Dodgers baseball's biggest traditions done by 3 of the biggest names in Vtubing would have been the most surreal and fun experience for me. I hope something like this happens again when I have the means to be there.
I think more booths and a website would've helped with selling gangbusters and satisfying consumers, but, in COVER's defense there were probably restrictions on the Dodgers' end. Plus, this is their first time collabing with a major non-Japanese organization (MLB), so them learning from it is a literal guarantee.

Ever see the Comiket episode of Lucky Star? That scene that begins with the guy cosplaying as Commander Riker blowing up because a booth had sold out of show exclusives? I'm sure that had more than a little grounding in reality.

I agree, I also have to believe that Cover just underestimated how well their fans would turn out for this. The Dodgers are really turning out the Japanese fans because of Ohtani and Yamamoto (well, Ohtani mostly), but not every Japanese is a VTuber fan. I read that the LA Times asked Yamamoto about the collab and he didn't even know what a VTuber is.

No, planes are not in danger. These drones fly between 50 to 100m high in the air. Any plane that LOW is more in danger of stalling than of some small drones
And how the drones don't crash into each other? Well, they do, when you don't program them correctly.
But what also is forgotten: These drones don't move during the performance. they just switch on or off their bright LED lights. The sky is made literally to a huge LED screen and then according to their programming and timing certain drones turn off and on their lights. And after the performance they just land again one by one.

Actual drone pilot here. OP is mostly correct about the drones, though there is one spot that they are off about. The drones do move, just typically the movement is not only rehearsed extremely well way ahead of time, but they are also kept to a minimum so as to limit the number of potential accidents. For a drone show like that there were probably around 400+ drones used, by my best estimate, and typically the batteries of the drones used for displays like that only last around 15-30 minutes, so they likely had a system of having drones with low battery slip out of formation when dark and a fresh drone slip into the first one's place before it is time for the next wave of light in that slot. That display is even more hella impressive the more you know about how drone displays work and what efforts go into making one successful. The pilots probably put in hundreds, if not tens of hundreds of hours programming in the movements, timing, and art needed for that display. I say bravo to them.

It's a learning experience, that's for sure. I knew there's some people disappointed that they had to wait the long line that they missed the game, so hope they considered to open more booths for merchs if they doing something like this again.
Also, Gura's singing being a blessing for Dodger to win the game is probably the best thing happened that night.
It is the venue that generally controls how large a merch booth a sponsor gets, and they just had no idea what they were in for. I mean this is baseball we are talking about here. The stadium management just had no concept of what idol or rockstar fans are like and the sheer numbers that would show up.

Considering Kiaras recent Football arc a Hololive Football collab would be hype as hell although probably way harder to do considering how much more massive football is. Also like unlike American sports there isn't really many breaks in football to really do something and breaks like the half time break are general not really used for any show (honestly i think in general all the ads, collabs and shows that happen during every single break in US is considered a very American thing and trying to bring it to football will only cause lot of displeasure for football fans. Football culture is already trying to fight the Americanization of the sports for the longest time.) and there is usually also no after show (fans way to busy celebrating just like that for any events afterwards). Maybe at most performing for opening ceremonies for tournaments however considering the we already know the venues for all the bigger football events in the next decade i have my doubts we will see it sadly.
A National Hockey League collab would be pretty fab, they even have a team based out of San Jose named the Sharks so there's Gura again. (And a team in Anaheim called the Ducks which would be perfect for Subaru. 😉 )
