I had just graduated high school & was visiting him for a couple weeks. He took me to a concert at Ebbett's... it was Mr Miles Davis. Little did I know at the time that I was witnessing a legend. Cute lead and follow with Miles and Chaka. Loved his face like "Got her!" Anyone thinking that Chaka was out of her league here is sadly mistaken. She is one of the most prolific Jazz singers, and the lift that she has in her upper register is incredible. She easily scales up to a B5 without even using her head voice, and her total range is ridiculous. She clearly didn't know the song, as she came out with written lyrics, and was enjoying the improv. I will say had she known the song better, it probably would have been a different performance. But they had fun, and it was a nice set. #mastersinsession

Chaka did a beautiful impromptu job. She grew up to Miles Davis's music and her dad was in a jazz band. That's likely why her voice sounds so jazzy. Another thing that helps Chaka is her superb enunciation while singing out the lyrics, confidence and willingness to patiently sing off the band's performance. She has a great ear for playing off the band. Anyways, Chaka is a pro on stage, make no mistake. Started her stage singing at age 17, and still current on tour... she's no rookie.

This is a a crowned King of Jazz in my book.He opened many doors for artists who worked under and with him.Black music in general owes him a great debt of gratitude. An extremely talented individual on talent perhaps only Micheal Jackson and James Brown are better than him.A sharp dresser and never under anyone's instructions on what was style and good fashion taste.Salute to the king.

    • @justjohnny6559

That's bullshit! Those guys were athletes who studied long and hard and had intense hours of practice. Don't buy into the "he was just born with it" or "it just comes from the soul." Yeah, after being in the woodshed for fifteen hours a day. Otherwise, their fingers couldn't physically do the things that Parker and Cannonball Adderly do. And they couldn't hear the notes that Miles plays so beautifully.

Geert Van Boxelaer Semi-disagree. I suck at 85% of most intermediate rock songs. Never mind metal type double bass. But I CAN do funk. I have natural timing already. I'm a fan of the 'nome for sure, but CZcams is FULL of little bumble bee effers flying around on a kit with 8,000 hits per measure and no groove at all...jmo. I think funk might be in that "in the crack" pocket. Not straight, not too much swing, but smack in the middle.
Think "I want you" Marvin Gaye's "sofa practice tape." It's got a weird beat. 1, 3 on kick. 16th on HH. Snare JUST on 2. Forget the stupid and dated disco final product off the album. THIS is interesting. I've showed it to guys who play way better than I do and can't find the pocket on it at all. Because there has to be room for despair in that beat.
James Gadson. He's a master at that.

    • @ronaldkool6109
