My god.. this sounds friggin' epic. How cyberpunk is not a more popular videogame genre is beyond me. The year of the zombie needs to end, bring on the year of the android.
Looking at the things he predicted in Cyberpunk 2020 about the way society would change, and judging by the way he talks and looks, I would say that this is a very intelligent man who sees and judges the world clearly.
The fact that this guy and the devs showed so much passion for this project (some of which you can still see in the game) only for the launch to be ruined by decisions made by higher ups and investors will forever depress me. I enjoyed the game but I can tell the devs wanted to do so much more but their time was cut short, and that’s without going over bugs.
"Cyberpunk isn't about saving humanity, it's about saving yourself." Hits way different when we now have *_that_* particular ending from Phantom Liberty. c':
Pity CDPR's "make peace with mortality" philosophy was too nihilistic and depressing for any gamer of cultured taste to buy this golden turd of corpo propaganda. Persona 3 did that better. Ubisoft's Watch Dogs, the new Shadowrun games and the adult visual novel "City of Broken Dreamers" would be my go-to cyberpunk experience. Sincerly, with all due respect to you Mike Pondsmith, you could've chosen a better game developer unbound by corpo contracts or assigned said developers to roleplay the tabletop game for deeper context and have Keanu Reeves play a more original character instead of SIlverhand. IMHO, apart from the above rushed release and farfetched storyline that strangled the step-above anime adaptaion's potential to tower above said game into its own, this is a next-to unfaithul iteration of your creation as much as Disney was the wrong business for Lucas to sell his beloved IPs.
@@Chinothebad It's not just depressing, it emasculates and disempowers players of their agency and ability to impact the story even on an an interpersonal level. Not helped by the hastily written, farfetched story. Judy's arc is the prime example where next to nothing goes right no matter your actions. If the story was about facing mortality as above, it should've given heartwarming, meaningful rewards from good deeds or well-intentioned actions, like saving Evelyn Parker from her pointless death (including via the part where you cut Deshawn out of the deal) and helping her achieve her actress dream. Seriously, Cyberpunk isn't misery porn or contermplating helpless fatalism, it's about rebellion against a broken society. That's where the "Punk" in Cyberpunk comes from.
@@skymabile2855 For rebellion against a broken society, you more or less fight Arasaka in most endings that leads to them being crippled. Writing would of no doubt suffered due to the devs having to be told to release the game in the state that made it infamous but to say there's no impact on an interpersonal level, I'm sure there'd be people that would disagree considering how you have people calling the player during the credits depending on what ending they aimed for. And how exactly is this game corpo propaganda?
@@ChinothebadMy bad not being clear from the get-go. What makes this game feel like corpo/pro-capitalist propaganda is that the corpo dictatorship system as a whole is treated as the most truly invincible form of tyranny that can't be beaten till mankind's extinction, if not exaggerated the dystopian aspects to cheesy b-movie levels. And everyone is too scared to fight back or badly depends on it the way a handicapped, socially-isolated child depends on a neglectful/abusive sugar-daddy paying for the same life-support, i.e. the environment, food, entertainment and infrastructure. Even if you screw-up Arasaka, it's rival Militech and other megacorps will undoubtedly swoop in like tapeworm-infested vultures and reap the spoils that you sow and keep Night city a nasty place. Not to mention corporations are run like dysfunctional, cartoonish, Bond-villain country clubs. Even if it was overthrown without a planned replacement system (barring maybe Yorinobu the renegade Arasaka prince or his sister Hanako, who is not Azula 2.0 especially if you go by tabletop lore), another, nastier dictatorship will rise like a fresh new Hydra head. Look how that went for the French Revolution's Robespierre or Lenin's Bolsheviks who took their eyes off the ball and devolved into homicidal maniacs. Not to mention most named characters (examples like River Ward, Judy Alvarez and Evelyn Parker excepted) are selfish and greedy. They don't want to make their environment more livable nor cut-down on the crime-rate, even the white-collar crime that corpos are known for. They all have the same dumb idea of scoring a quick buck through pointless backstabbing even when there's long-term enterprise available through human decency. That's the definition of insanity in Cyberpunk; next to everyone prizes the American dream: championing monetary wealth and individual freedom at everyone's expense over spiritual wealth and collective freedom. But in all honesty it's never easy to overthrow tyranny, but far from impossible as Ghandi quoted along the line "The values of goodness and love always triumph." The most ideal ending in any cyberpunk dystopia is that rebels don't try to outright dismantle the system completely, but rather spank it in line, cost Megacorps more money oppressing the people than their income can sustain them. And in a karmically poetic, round-about way, the majority of people band together Nomad-style communities together buddying with the surviving Native American tribes and embracing the same native values and philosophies that their ancestors tried to exterminate. Sooner or later the corpos go broke from a lack of sufficient customers, unless their crazy Bond-villain bosses get replaced by a saner employer after the former suffers the "price of failure" they inflicted on their employees. I hope you liked this as much as you may have found it educational. If so please at least leave a like.😉
Maelcum produced a white lump of foam slightly smaller than Case's head, fished a pearl-handled switchblade on a green nylon lanyard out of the hip pocket of his tattered shorts and carefully slit the plastic. He extracted a rectangular object and passed it to Case. "Thas part some gun, mon?" "No," Case said, turning it over, "but it's a weapon. It's a virus." "Not on this boy tug, mon," Maelcum said firmly, reaching for the steel cassette. "A program. Virus program. Can't get into you, can't even get into your software. I've got to interface it through the deck, before it can work on anything..." He slotted the Chinese virus, paused, then drove it home. `Okay,' he said, "we're on..." "Christ on a crutch," the Flatline said, "take a look at this." The Chinese virus was unfolding around them. Polychrome shadow, countless translucent layers shifting and recombining. Protean, enormous, it towered above them, blotting out the void. - Neuromancer

Hey Mike, If you ever happen across this comment I want you to know that regardless of how this game was recieved on launch, It has fully invested me in your world of Cyberpunk. I have read through the cyberpunk 2020 rulebook, and I plan to buy Cyberpunk Red when it's back in stock. I absolutely love TTRPGs and I had no clue how massive and detailed of a world you'd created. So thank you for that
Cyberpunk really is an under-represented gaming genre. I hope this game does amazing and affects tons of people. Zombies, fantasy, and modern warfare are all overdone: we need something fresh, like this. looking forward to this game
This video being 10+ years old now is simultaneously crazy and depressing. In that same breath, it is truly awesome how watching this video still gets me hyped that decade later.
CD PR don't rush things for the quick money and that is (sadly) something that sets them apart from almost any other developer. Such a great company that really loves creating interactive art, an atmosphere you can lose yourself in, a story you want to experience. I'm looking foreward to this game!
The game didn't launch in a good state gameplay wise. But the story, the themes, the lore, the atmosphere were always great. And it's because they included Maximum Mike and a great team of writers for the world-building and story.
When he says they have been dragging him to Poland several times a year it sounds like he has been working on it for at least two years beforehand. If this is true then we are looking at a decade of some kind of development. Also, MY VISION IS AUGMENTED.
It was announced 8 years ago, but at that point it was just an idea. Nothing more than an animation and ideas on a drawing board. They did not start any real development work till they finished the last Witcher 3 DLC. Which was in 2016.
In the early aughts I looked at the prices of cellphones and service in the Cyberpunk sourcebooks and laughed "they're way too high!" and yet at the end of 2016 it's pretty much just as predicted...
To be honest it's a nice touch but they didn't need him in it, to step on stage, or anything. Fans and gamers alike are sold on what CDPR did with the Witcher series, how gamer friendly they are, sound design, story design, quest design..etc. Any movie fans of John Wick that don't play video games aren't gonna pick up the PC version of Cyberpunk 2077 to play just cuz Keanu Reeves is in it now.
It would’ve been better if he wasn’t honestly, we could’ve had Johnny silverhand. I like him as a person and I enjoy him as an actor(to an extent)but they spent how much money for pretty shallow line delivery for a character that’s supposed to be very expressive and have layers and he’s kinda just “I’ll raise my voice here…. And be empty here”. Looking at old Johnny Silverhand concept art makes me realize how robbed we were.
Just started on my fourth 100% completion play through and I just wanted to say thank you to Mike and CDPR for creating such a captivating and interesting world. Though I know it's had a very uneasy launch I myself haven't had any major problems and I must say I've enjoyed this game far more than I could've anticipated. (Funny how this was just recommended now though lol)
I hope, and I really hope, that with a massive cityscape that this game will be set in, we'll be able to fully explore and traverse the interior of every building and nook and cranny. I love GTA but they seem to never be able to let you do that in their games. However, this is CDPR and they know how to make fantastic games. So I have a damn good gut feeling that they'll make a masterpiece for the ages.
The game is going to be 5 times bigger than The Witcher 3 which is about 15 times the size of skyrims map lol so yeah there are probably going to be huge cities in it
SEaster IslanderS To be fair the reason you didn’t see that much in GTA V was because they restricted like 95% of enterable buildings to the online mode, along with all the other content. I don’t know about EVERY building but I’m confident we’ll have a shitload of places to explore.
This makes me so happy. I haven’t seen a community of gamers from all sources (console, pc, and xbox) come together for a video game in so long. It makes me feel like a little kid, especially knowing that the developers actually CARE about what they’re making and listen to their audience while still sticking directly to source material and letting the original creator shape the new world. Regardless of how crappy these years have been, I’m glad to have been born just in time to play this game.
If you guys can read this, that means Witcher 3 has been released and Cyberpunk 2077 is NOW in active-production. It was placed on halt months ago to finish off Witcher 3. Now that its done, we can expect Cyberpunk 2077. I hope they pull it off. I also won't mind it being released in 2016. Update: I also won't mind it being released in 2018. Take your time, CDPR!

+yousonuva It's just that the game is worth a lot more. Paying 50% felt like I stole the game, I want to give something to the devs. It's like you having someone else pay for your food, you want to pay them back.
"Cyberpunk isn't about saving humanity, it's about saving yourself." The Relic and how it works is just the extension of that mindset. This game makes you face that. Even under an oppressive system, you can still lead a meaningful and impactful life. Stay true to yourself, uplift other people and find joy in life and you'll be able to say that you've had a decent run.
Too bad you don't get much of a vote in the matter story-wise, less stellar branching paths rewarding or punishing your choices meaningfully that made you feel content with your impending death, ala Fallout. The only message I get is a nihilistic cop-out that our choices never matter. It's misery porn to the end that makes your player death feel more like an escape than a well-spent heroe's sacrifice. Not helped by the games rushed release that cut out good story branches. My biggest repulsion to the game is the many pointless/tragic deaths you can't prevent and characters you can't romance. I.E. in both cases, Evelyn Parker!😭 DAMN YOU CDPR!😡 Spoilers for Edgerunners anime below . . . Don't read!😰 I feel that the tragic ending of the prequel Netflix anime by Studio Trigger is an emotionally manipulative marketing ploy to motivate people to buy the game just to avenge the ill-fated characters. Even getting the character's weapons and cyberware feels like getting sour candy as a consolation prize. Since said anime is tied to a crappy game with a crappy storyline that punishes more good deeds than bad because of industrial f***ery, I'd rather write a fanfic than buy the game.
I played the table top. I wonder if Pondsmith would be as stoked today... did they honor Night City? I look at Pondsmith and Gibson... is 2077 the true essence of dystopia or just another corpo scam?

@@skymabile2855 Corpo propaganda? What makes you think a gamer of some cultured taste would find the game all too nihilistic and depressing?

"Thas part some gun, mon?"
"No," Case said, turning it over, "but it's a weapon. It's a virus."
"Not on this boy tug, mon," Maelcum said firmly, reaching for the steel cassette.
"A program. Virus program. Can't get into you, can't even get into your software. I've got to interface it through the deck, before it can work on anything..."
He slotted the Chinese virus, paused, then drove it home.
`Okay,' he said, "we're on..."
"Christ on a crutch," the Flatline said, "take a look at this."
The Chinese virus was unfolding around them. Polychrome shadow, countless translucent layers shifting and recombining. Protean, enormous, it towered above them, blotting out the void.
