Building A 2021 VW Tiguan R-Line For The VW Enthusiast Fleet

- Volkswagen has been nice enough to include me in building a vehicle for the 2021 VW Enthusiast Fleet. The vehicle in which I have had the pleasure of building is the 2021 Tiguan R Line Black Edition!
This project has been a bit of a challenge with the unfortunate timing of bad weather & delayed shipping on parts. In the end though it all came together & I am very pleased with the build.
One of the more exciting things about this project, is the amount of genuine VW Accessories I was able to use! ❤️
I was able to finish the project just in time before loading it on the truck & shipping it down to Florida for the Euro Tripper show. There are a few small touches that will be done to the Tiguan once I meet up with it in Florida.

Amazing video. I have a 21 SE unfortunately not R line, out of my price range at the time. Do you have video or pictures of removing the faux exhaust cover ports? I pulled the 2 clips on the edge but it seems that the rest is still attached. Any advice or response would be great. Following your builds after seeing what you have done. Thanks

Tiguan looks really good in black, almost as good as Ralph's editing and camera skills! Hopefully the pandemic will subside and you can come to South Africa for Camp Fest in September!

Looking into getting a 2021 se r-line. It doesn’t have a lot of power but that can always be added later, it looks great.

Saw a R-line Atlas the other day, just helped fortify my need and want for a Atlas, but I also really like the Audi Q7 S-line
Both great vehicles but I loved driving my Atlas Cross Sport ❤️ This Tiguan is just as fun too !

Just snagged myself a 21 Tig today. Is the rear valence custom to fit the quad exhaust? Or did you just snap off the fake dual exhaust accents on the oem bumper?

Can I get the full specs of the wheels and tires? I just got a Tiguan and I like your set up. Also coil overs or lowering springs?
The wheels are Rotiform OZE 20x10" with ET40 (with spacers from BFI). The tires are 285/35R20 from Continental. The coilovers are from SoloWerks and are specifically made for the Tiguan. :-)

Jamie, did you keep the brackets for sidesteps on for a reason when you loaded it? Just curious.
The sidesteps were being painted at the time the vehicle was being loaded. We put the sidesteps back on once in Florida ❤️

I'm shopping for a built B5 Avant, I can't find one, next thought was something like these (Q5, etc)...but there was never a modified enthusiasts base to begin with so really don't exist.

You’re that guy with that base model mk7 just got rid of mine but I miss it something about that 1.4 and So good on gas super sleek. Man I miss my Jetta. This Tiguan is super clean too man you got good taste.

Do the tires rub at all?? I have a 2020 Tig R-line with Solowerks coilovers and 20x9 wheels and 255/40/20 tires.... I feel if I put spacers on I'm totally going to be rubbing??? My coil settings are almost maxed out at full high on both front and rear?? 28.5" from ground to top of fender trim in front and 28.75" in the rear
They will rub without having the right ride setting for sure.. :-)

What kind of front lip do you have on the Tiguan ?

This is a factory USA model; we can't import non-USA models until they're 25 years old unfortunately. :-)

Wow... I love my MK5 gti. Its candy white. 6 speed Manual. Slammed. And has gold BBS rims with the chrome deep dish lip. Well, it appears there is a new car that has stolen my heart and it's this all black Tiguan. Thing looks amazing. When and if possible, please be sure to list all things done to the car and where to buy them. Cheers.

Damn was planning on getting either a GTI or GLI but now I think im getting one of these .. Do they offer with vr6?
Only the 2.0T in the Tiguan (which you can do most of the same engine things with as the GTI); the Atlas and Cross Sport have optional 3.6 VR6 engines :-)

do you have to adjust the sensors on the tiguan after lowering?
It's not mandatory - the parking sensors get a bit annoyed when driving slowly at funny angles, and if I went really low it would be nice to change the headlight adjuster, but otherwise, no issues really :-)

Thanks! They are 20x10" Rotiform OZR with a final offset around +25 and +28, they do rub if the suspension height isn't set correctly.. :-)

Thanks Elliot! Yes, the USA Tiguan is basically a Rest-Of-World Allspace. We don't get the short wheel base version here. :-)

They usually move around at a few shows all over ! This year will prove to be a bit difficult with some shows being canceled due to covid

It's a new kit from SoloWerks specifically for the Tiguans - it should be on the TheSuspensionSource.com website this week I think :-)
How much were the wheels and tires if you don’t mind me asking.
The wheels are about $1,400 for a set of 4, and the tires were about the same price for a set also. :-)

They're from Borla, who sent them out based on me explaining what I wanted them to look like - I can't see them in the catalog.. :-)

Looks great! It is, however, increasingly frustrating that VW doesn’t offer true performance trims in the larger, family friendly models (in the U.S.). Their idea of slapping an R badge on models with no engine upgrade is disappointing.
A full R model would be nice, and I totally understand what you're saying :-) The R-Line is the appearance package which I do like visually of course.. :-)

Ok I really like the 2020 Tig. Just upgraded from a 2018 Tig.
My biggest complaint is lack of power. Of the line no power, merging onto to freeway no power, passing no power and overall no power. So yea, it’s powerless. I actually contemplated the R line but again adding the R still has no power. Decided my wife can drive it and she tells me no power???? WTF VW give this dog some power to go with the great looks. Did I mention the 2020 Tig SE has no power? Is there a remapping that can give this sled a little more?
You can definitely remap it, but honestly (and I really mean honestly), I haven't felt like it suffered from too little power. It''ll cruise well above 100 and butt dyno estimate puts it around 15sec 1/4 mile - which isn't by any means fast, shouldn't leave you worried about merging etc.
You're totally correct on R-Line being appearance only, so the USA does indeed not have factory power options. The fun thing about the Tig 2.0T on the MQB chassis is that almost anything that works on a Golf GTI with the same engine will work on it, so you can power increase to your hearts, and throttle foots, content if you wish.
