Excuse the pronunciation as you can tell I'm not Japanese.
Mythology & Fiction Explained
Your pronunciation is correct.
Just your rhythm is off a bit.
It was good enough. Don't sweat it.
You have a clear and calming voice. I could listen to you all day.
Think you will do a video on the kitsune in the near future
It's fine enough for me.
いいよ。
it takes two to Tengu...
haKurei kura 😂 😂
Get out
You idiot 🤣🤣😂😂😂👍
This is my favorite comment on the internet.
Get out! Lol
The castle grows loud with the sound of scurrying, the Tengu will see to the rats
“Will you hunt rats with me, Sekiro?”
MIRU SEKIROOOOO
MaJestiC TELL ME YOUR NAME
I've always been partial to the story of the Samurai Yoshitsune. The young boy who was trained by the head Tengu Sojobou in the art of swordsmanship, magic, and strategy. It shows a more benevolent side to the Tengu you don't often see.
Not familiar with Japanese mythology but this has peaked my interest
Black Rose I was just thinking the same thing.
*piqued* your interest
You mean 'beaked' your interest? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
👺
Simon ᛋ one of my favorite Pokémon
That's why in german it's tengulist (list= shifty)
While I don't really like Grass types in general.....I keep those who look badass like Shiftry and Sceptile.
I thought he was based off of an Indian Chief, especially since Nuzleaf look like a stereotypical Indian
What about tengu man e.x.e?
Hey sweetheart today I signed up to be a patreon of your channel sorry I can't give more I work in fast food so I'm broke Hahahah I want to see you succeed, dear. You deserve it. Thank you for inspiring me with your sincerity and perseverance. I truly adore you. I hope to talk to you more, dear.

@ Andrea Lentz What a selfless, lovely soul you are! May good fortune bless your path.
I absolutely adore Yo-Kai, and Tengu, and all sorts of Japanese mythology.
@Shealyne Anglin If I'm being honest, I doubt I could pick. Though, Hōō, Gumyōchō, Suzaku, Seiryū, and certainly Kuzunoha, are some of my faves.
@Shealyne Anglin nice, they're pretty interesting.
Then play the Nioh series its all based on Japanese folklore
What about the Oni? They aren’t adorable 😂
Excellent accounts! Love your channel! Keep them coming!
Tengu were said to have taught the first ninja
Davlavi i hear the same
Davlavi Real ninja were just samurai tasked with information gathering, scouting, or occasional assassination.
Which is a common misconception. These stupid stories were told centuries after the war period. No serious japanese historian will find evidence of the so called ninjas. I trained Ninjutsu...It is crap. It is based on nothing authentic .
@@supremecaffeine2633 no,they weren't called like that. A group was once named something like Shinobi ,but it was just a regiment group or whatever they stormed the castle and took it. Samurai warlords never used some paid mercenaries for an important task. They would hire specialised units ,loyal soldiers with a very specific skill set...
Tomi *No Evidence*
Great informative vid good work mythology and fiction team
I would love to see more Japanese folklore😊 keep up the amazing work I love listening to you tell stories
It would have been cool if in Nioh 2, there was a Tengu boss based off the long nosed red tengu which are the more famous type of their kind, one who just laughs and offers you a reword for proving your might to him after winning. Honestly love Japanese mythology and how crazy and wacky it can be with creative creatures spirits and demons. Will always remember that one kite tengu from Sekiro...that one straight up made me laugh. 👺
Omg yes!!! I love and Live for Japanese mythology, please add some tribal African and Aztec/Mayan mythologies too, I love these so much.
like quetzlcoatl?(sorry if my spelling is terrible)
I encountered a Japanese Tengu while I was hiking near the base of Mt. Fuji. I was in shock of what I was seeing, the Tengu was slightly glowing, & it appeared to give me a slight nod as it retreated into the forest.
Bullshit
Fantastic, as always!
You are awesome! I love listening to these
Its kinda funny that in ghost of tsushima you fight tengu in a mythic tale.
There's mythical creatures in that game? I've yet to play it yet, but am probably gonna buy it in a week or two
Thank you for all the cool video's.
Great job on this video
Fascinating to see how they characters have changed in look and deeds. I’m currently playing a Tengu Samurai in a Pathfinder rpg campaign.
who else came here from Ghost of Tsushima Tengu boss fight?
''Do you not fear the demon's curse?''
I'm here because I watched Power Rangers when I was younger.
They are the worst in nightmare survival
I love Japanese Mythology before now I only found year old videos so thank you here's some more information about the Tengu they used to have long noses but evolved into a beak and are used to punish people who do evil their name can mean ' heavenly dog"
Thanks for the explanation.
I love your channel Sir!
Sojobo, regarded as a wise and powerful Tengu. Often considered the king of Tengu, he appears in the legend where he trains Ushiwakamaru.
Making me want to watch Gantz series and movie again
Awesome work bro 👍👍
This is really cool!
The video is awesome, also can you do the kitsune next?
Tengu; one of my favourite Shapeshifter to play in Werewolf: The Apocalypse.
When the tengu summons gold i just imagine the man, pretending for a while, letting the gold rain down while yelling "oh noooo"
Nice Vids Bro

I honestly think they look cool......might be one of my favorite Yōkai's and favorite mythological creature in general
Interesting, thank you.
Great story!
Hey, you displayed the names. I like that a lot. Cool to see that my suggestion made it to a video of yours. :-) Thanks
Yeah it's something I've been trying to do in videos where there's difficult spelling/pronunciation involved.
There is an actual old animation that is an adaptation of the tale of the Tengu and the man with the lump on his face!
Very cool
Well done
If anybody is wondering what that exact words of the tengu in the Nihon shoki says here it is: “9th year, Spring, and month, 23rd day. A great star floated from East to West, and there was a noise like that of thunder. The people of that day said that it was the sound of the falling star. Others said that it was earth-thunder. Hereupon the Buddhist Priest Bin said:-"It is not the falling star, but the Celestial Dog, the sound of whose barking is like thunder." - 720 AD
Tengu are the most unpredictable of the yokai. They might behave exactly like a normal human or could be a flesh-devouring lunatic monster. IMO would definitely classify them as agents of chaos and disorder, but not necessarily evil. They're all over J-pop culture too, one of the few Eastern monsters to cross from ancient stories to modern ones, like the western vampire.
Can you please do some native American myths as well
Jason Garcia there is American mythology?
+khalil uzumaki Yes, both Native American mythology and post-colonization folklore like Paul Bunyan, John Henry, Pecos Bill, or Rip Van Winkle
Strong wind
You expect the windigo
Thunderbird can be a bad omen
Quite a fascinating mythology the tengu is. And by far one of my favorites of Japanese folklore. The two sources that introduced me to this myth are the lesser known anime series "Karasu Tengu Kabuto" (1987), and Tengu Man from Megaman 8.
I was introduced by Naruto
Still trying to figure out what uchiha have to do with tengu….
I love reading about the Tengu in the Usagi Yojimbo comics
Recently I've been to Kurama Mount near Kyoto. This place is linked to Tengu and it is actually a very interesting place to visit.
I really love to watch all your videos bc I really love to learn about god mythologies
Can you please do the Tata Duende it's an urban legend in Latin cultures just like la llorona (the weeping woman), BTW loved the video
duende? In the philippines, we have a magical creature called dwende/duende which are little men with elvish or dwarvish appearances that will give you fortune if befriended while it will give you illness if you offended it. Hoping I would know the connection of the two
NeoredXII It's similar the only differences are that it's only one duende that takes form of an old man ( Tata stands for grandpa or old man, it's a mayan word) he is described as a trickster with no thumbs and his feet are backwards. They are very similar
Great another awesome video. KAPPA!
I see what you did there
Guilty as charged^^
I love the Tengu.
I believe there is a story about a Samurai who traveled up a mountain, and later returned claiming he had learned an unknown sword style from a Tengu.
You should do something on the Hungry Ghost Festival of Chinese mythology. There are lots of interesting stories to explore.
Ayyye!!!
4:20 this reminds me of a story from a japanese fairytail book my grandma would read to me. It was about a kindly old man who recived many blessings as a reward for his virtuous deeds and another old man jealous of the kindly man and always trying to copy him to recieve the same rewards but getting notheing or worse. I think it was to caution against self serving actions.
There’s an extremely similar Legend from the Britain Isles about the fae curing a kind old man of his haunches back, and then giving said disability to a greedy man. I believe the tale is called Jack Madden?
A very good story.
Congrats on you channel, been a supporter since you had 6k subscribers. I hope you got this channel monetized by youtube.
Moar Tengu vids!!
Are you planning to do creatures from Irish/Celtic mythology for St Patrick's Day?
Will Lyon
Yeah! I'd like to hear more about the invasion cycles!
On the X Box and PS2 game Dead or Alive2, the final boss is a Tengu, they were also portraed in the samurai Keanu Reeves movie "47 Ronin". I was always intriegued to know more about the Tengu! Thanks!!!
I really liked that movie, I wonder if it will get more interest with all of the Keanu Reeves memes and things going around on the internet now.
I have a kuniyoshi inspired tsttoo of kido maru slaying the great python and learning magic from the tengu. Love tengu
There’s a badass tengu in GantzO. That’s one sick movie.
Hey, that story of the 2nd dancer getting a lump was in Grimms tails- but with a fairymound and a hump/hunchback.
The tale with the lump is one also curiously found in African folklore. I wonder how they are connected???
please do the yukki onna next
The second type of tengu you mentioned is clearly the kind seen in MMPR season 3
Do one on Ibaraki Doji
The Tengu is also said to have given the Ninjutsu martial art techniques. It is said be related to the Buddhist bird Garuda. In this way Ninjutsu is heavily connected to the Vajrayana Buddhism.
Thanks
The Netflix movie Gants zero is full of yoki and I love learning more about them.
good video
It’s like a back and forth thing with the tengu and mortal humans with getting the one up the other.
The long nosed human (Yamabushi)Tengu remind me of Wim Hof the Dutch Ice Man!
You should do something on the Hindu God's that would be interesting
I’d assume he would like to however Hinduism is an active religion and he doesn’t want to offend anyone.
@@dynamitezverde9748 Buddhism,Shintō,Taoism are all still practiced today and most Japanese people are still superstitious so he could offend them just as easily but as some one you loves Japanese mythology i think he dose a good job.
@@dynamitezverde9748 first of all, shinto is still an active religion. secondly, Hindus dont get offended just because someone is explaining their culture which is what this channel does
I’m your 69th like
Have you seen "The Ritual"? It's a Netflix-exclusive horrorflic with a monster that is supposed to be a god of the northern mythology. A yotan I think it was called, a child of Loki. Maybe that could be a cool new video.
I did actually watch that movie last week and I enjoyed it, it's a video I thought about but I wasn't sure how I'd structure it.
It’s Joutun (giants of Norse mythology)
Fansome #babypanda *Jotünn*
Make a video Sekhet Please!
Haven't heard this much talk of Tengu since I played Rise of Mythos lol
Can you do a video on Dracula?
4:56 there’s an Irish fairy tale very similar to this story
wich one ?
4:22
I thought the folktale of “The Man with a Lump on his Face” stated that it was a group of Ōni (about 2) and other yōkai playing instruments...
I think there are some versions of Kobutori Jiisan (こぶとり爺さん) tale. I heard both.
I'm honestly flattered that you'd make a video about me.
Im a big fan of yours!!
I read some japanese folklore and also the tengu were credited with teaching the samurai the art of fighting iwth two swords instead of one.
2:40 this tengu looks to have the same arm markings like mugen's arms in samurai champloo which I thought was interesting
YES
Trivia: Akihabara got its name from the famous Karasu Tengu, Akiha Sanshakubo. Because of the great fire that almost burnt the town which was then blown by a powerful wind. Many believed he was responsible for this great wind and they made a shrine to honor him along with naming the town after him.
Do one on Nut ,Geb and Amun Ra
M8 i miss ur old channel 😭
can u do tamamo no mae next?
I wonder if u could start at some point a chronological order series to mythology, weather it's norse, greek, egyptian etc..
When a tengu wants to know your name...
I've heard that some considered the human like Tengu as a kind of Japanese goblin.
there’s a irish story just like the tengu one. there was an old irishman with a hump on his back, who so happened to play the flute beautifully (or he sung well i cant remember rightly). one day he heard the fair folk playing music and singing so he added a few notes of his own. the fair folk were so impressed that they took away his hump. of course when word got around of what happened, another man suffereing with a hump on his back tried the same thing, but he only offended the fair folk. they added the previous old man’s hump to his own so he now had two on his back instead of one
Referencing the video game Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. This video has revealed to me the true nature of Isshin Ashina. HE was the one that kidnapped the divine heir, and who kidnapped Sekiro.
Because when Sekiro awakens, he has forgotten nearly everything, he has suffered dementia. He is in a state of amnesia, forgetting that he was betrayed, forgetting the events at Hirata Estate, and forgetting everything between his failures and awakening in the reservoir. Isshin Ashina is a tried and true Tengu 👺 who deceives his victims and has a feud with the Buddhists who live in seclusion and commit corrupt deeds.
the originally tengu reminds me of the dog like men who were also spoke of as the cynocephaulus. Although the shooting star makes me wonder if this weren't originally a reference to the dog star..or something within canis constellations.
In Chinese astronomy it seems the canis major constellation is located in Nán Fāng Zhū Què, Vermillion Bird of the South. The celestial wolf as they termed it also denoted invasion and plunder which makes the shooting star motiff relevant .
Changing the tengu from a dog or wolf into the bird makes sense here when one considers the quadrant of the sky in which the dog is found, the vermillion bird. Again I note the vermillion in many of the depictions of the tengu, having vermillion skin. The cynocephaulus thus was the clue of why the tengu went from being dog like in China, to bird like in Japan.
I dunno enough on the history of how it actually came to transform so this is all speculative at best.
Is the Gerudo mentioned in this video at all related to the race of the same name in Zelda?
no, he's talking about Garuda, not Gerudo
That story about the old man with the lump on his face... there's a nearly identical story told in the Birtish Isles about a hunchback and a troop of fairies.
🙏une belle histoire sur la mythologie japonaise
I love tengu.
They are frickin BORDS
Think you can do videos of mythology on the first nations people of canada.
