    I have a carrier comfort pro apu on my 579. It has almost 24,000 running hours and still kicking it. Mine has its own coolant reservoir and I have an evaporator under the bunk with the condenser on back of cab. I’ve used both carrier and thermo king and I honestly prefer carrier.

    I really like this Carrier idea that you have going on. Doing it for $5,000 is a little steep on price, but you’re also rebuilding the engine to go with it. Place in Missouri sells used APU’s and installed they cost $5,000. Can’t wait to see the end of the series on this and see which is the better idea.
    I currently run a generator off the back of my truck and use a portable ac unit in the cab. If this pans out I might just hire you to do another one of these builds, lol

    I had TriPac's in company truck's, and I bought a Carrier for my own truck when it was new. I can say 100% the carrier is a piece of noisy shit, and the dealers are not much better. I live with the regret of making this decision every day on the road. I will never purchase another Carrier product as long as i'm alive, TK forever!

    In my opinion......yes the carrier is louder than the TK by far but if you intend to use a lot of house power (110v) for cooking and whatnot the carrier is far superior in that aspect. It has a 6k ac generator built in the unit whereas the TK uses a 120 amp ish 12v alternator and an inverter to create house power. It all depends on really what you want do with the Apu. More house power..... carrier.....basic needs .... TK. That's just my opinion. Take it as you want.

    Besides heat and cooling, I thought an APU made 12 volt power to charge the truck batteries for the truckers using Microwave ovens, coffee makers, TVs and dvd players or Cpap machines and everything electric. And now for a question. What is stopping you from mounting an APU up on the frame rails a few inches from the cab? The only downside I can think of is that IT will be destroyed if you jackknife the trailer. But you're not supposed to do that anyway.

    Hey Ryan! I am in the unique situation where I am also looking at both units (with limited frame space).
    Can you tell me the space in inches from your Fuel tank to the suspension mount that your APU sits in?
    Both carrier and TK need 24 to 26 inches of frame space and your space looks pretty tight, I would love to know the space you TriPac takes up.

      I don't know if you have a headache rack or not but I have seen them mounted at the back of the cab before. not sure if it's a special mounting kit or if it's a custom thing but I've seen it several times done that way mostly on short wheel base trucks.

  • @aj44ish
    @aj44ish Před 3 lety +1

    Ryan, I like the plan you’ve come up with. If you couldn’t get a used APU, I think that I would basically do what your doing, except I would probably mount an electric start 6 kw kubota and mount a 5 or 6 thousand btu RV A/C unit on the roof of the truck and compliment it with a Chinese wabasto bunk heater knock off unit. Having said that I would also carry a 1500 watt electric space heater in winter just in case the knock off failed, till I could get another one for $130.00 on Amazon.

    • @cweber9112
      @cweber9112 Před 3 lety

      This only works if you have a shorter truck that can accept the unit for height. Taller trucks like my 780 wouldn’t be able to have a roof mounted a/c system.

    • @aj44ish
      @aj44ish Před 3 lety +1

      @@cweber9112 Very true.I guess it would depend on the type of truck you had as to what would work.. I have seen some Condo units on the road that have the RV A/C units mounted on the front slope and the white cover painted to match the colour of the truck. They do make some nice compact units now, not like old days with those big ugly bulky units. Being as I’m frugal, “cheap”, I think I’d figure a way before I’d put out 15 or 20 grand for an APU. Just my thoughts but good point Bearded Trucker.

    I choose Carrier over the Deevolution. The older tripacs were great and blew ice cold ac. You could turn the heater on when the motor had a fault. And you could get the trouble code without the usb. The usb is a good idea, but bring back functionality when stuck in cold weather and the apu won't start or breaks down and don't use cheap parts. As for the heater. You need to change the atomizer screen once a year. It's a cheap easy job. They were designed to run on kerosene and not dirty diesel fuel. But if you keep them cleaned out once a year, they will not let you down. Espar is quality they just hate not getting enough air to start when clogged with carbon.

    You only need 1 HP to power each one ton (12,000 BTU’s) of cooling, plus I guess maybe enough to charge the truck batteries. So, I think they could make a small 1.5 to 2 HP unit identical to a trailer reefer unit, but much smaller and mount it on the back of the cab. I am certain “they” could make it smooth enough and quiet enough to mount on the cab where it would not be submerged in salt. They could make it a heat pump with electric heat strips. Thanks.

    I say screw both of them, especially the carrier unit. The coolant for the APU should NOT be connected to the truck's coolant that's just ridiculous. I rather get an RV and a generator and install that and probably have a stand-alone a/c unit and some batteries to charge up when the diesel truck is running.

      Truth is a lot truck drivers are braindead and drive until the last minute before they have to take a 30 min break and keep driving. It’s such a retarded and dangerous move since they can get hit or cause an accident. Instead of going to a rest area or gas station or at least exit off the ramp and pull over on the other ramp back onto the freeway . I’m a truck driver myself and they still do this . Angry DOT officers sometimes get them and give them tickets 🎉
