Keaton Henson - Initium

  • “Initium is the first movement from the upcoming album and symphonic work ‘Six Lethargies’.
    Shot in one take, with nature somehow perfectly mirroring the changes in the music, the accompanying film is a visual representation of the unrelenting struggle to see past current traumas, and the desperate attempt to keep your head above water.
    It is designed to heighten the effects of the music, adding further subconscious responses to an already effecting experience.
    And in spite of being so seemingly simple, when watched fully can be profoundly moving, as a perfect expressionistic representation of a humans desperate attempts to stay afloat and breathe among the chaos.’

    I just wanted to say, that my best friend and I discovered Keaton Henson when we were in high school. I came across him on CZcams one day and i remember playing “you don’t know how lucky you are” for her in the car on one of our numerous late night drives. She took her life 9 months ago. Playing Keaton Henson always puts me back in that car with her, her smile, her laugh. Thank you for being apart of the best memories I have with her

    Keaton,
    Years ago I wrote you a letter from the bottom of my wretched traumatized heart. I wasn't going to live and your music literally saved me. Elevator song, in particular.
    But I felt too worthless to mail it out. Also knowing you are an introvert I doubt you would read it if it reached you...
    So I say now....i hold onto the letter, and read it every now and again.
    Your music saved me. I cried watching/listening to this. A new chapter in your life song, as well as mine....thank you for the music.

    I am. At a loss for words.
    You are one of- if not my all time favourite artist. And to see an upload out of the blue gave me such overwhelming feelings of joy and anticipation.
    The start of this beautiful piece could be considered calm compared to the rest of it. I felt myself there. Lost at sea, trying to keep my head out of the water. The waves themselves seem to get bigger and more intense, fervent to keep me under. My heart was beating so fast. I felt the overwhelmingly powerful feeling of wanting to give up. To stop fighting. That no one was coming to save me.
    Not only can this amazing piece of yours be equated to an actual drowning victim but it is also a metaphor. A metaphor for life and how it tries to pull you under again and again, making you want to give up and stop fighting, feeling as though no one is there. But as the quote at the end says 'The physiological fact remains, while there is breath in your lungs you will float.', and as hard as it sometimes seems that is true. No matter how much you want it or how hard you try to fight it, your body- your mind will hold onto that final breath as long as it can.
    At the end, the music slows and the waves crashing seem to calm, however still fighting against you, despite that I can see waves on the horizon. And ending black while you began white. Starting looking up at the sky and ending looking down at the depths below was so poetic.
    I love this. I love your work. It always comes from such a deep place, and you can tell, with or without your voice. And I can relate to every note.

    This song makes me imagine all my problems as an ocean, and, I realize it's a shame I never learned to swim.
    Because everything we do we had to learn to do. Nothing we fail at is about us but what we've learned. If you dont want to drown, then learn to swim.
    But facing that great vast ocean, Is overwhelming.
    Because you cannot swim forever. You will drown, and creatures that will feast on you your remains and the water pressure will crush your bones. Swimming is not enough.
    Everything that hurts us isnt because of who we are,but what we learn.
    You can keep punishing yourself, tell yourself your not good enough or take that time you used to on those toxic thoughts. have and jump in the water and breathe. Because, if you breathe deep enough, you will surely float.
    I thank keaten henson for this song. Its despair, but it fills me with hope that things will be better.we can make our lives better.

    I cried out to God with my voice-
    To God with my voice;
    And He gave ear to me.
    In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord;
    My hand was stretched out in the night without ceasing;
    My soul refused to be comforted.
    I remembered God, and was troubled;
    I complained, and my spirit was overwhelmed. Selah
    You hold my eyelids open;
    I am so troubled that I cannot speak.
    I have considered the days of old,
    The years of ancient times.
    I call to remembrance my song in the night;
    I meditate within my heart,
    And my spirit makes diligent search.
    Will the Lord cast off forever?
    And will He be favorable no more?
    Has His mercy ceased forever?
    Has His promise failed forevermore?
    Has God forgotten to be gracious?
    Has He in anger shut up His tender mercies? Selah
    And I said, “This is my anguish;
    But I will remember the years of the right hand of the Most High.”
    I will remember the works of the Lord;
    Surely I will remember Your wonders of old.
    I will also meditate on all Your work,
    And talk of Your deeds.
    Your way, O God, is in the sanctuary;
    Who is so great a God as our God?
    You are the God who does wonders;
    You have declared Your strength among the peoples.
    You have with Your arm redeemed Your people,
    The sons of Jacob and Joseph. Selah
    The waters saw You, O God;
    The waters saw You, they were afraid;
    The depths also trembled.
    The clouds poured out water;
    The skies sent out a sound;
    Your arrows also flashed about.
    The voice of Your thunder was in the whirlwind;
    The lightnings lit up the world;
    The earth trembled and shook.
    Your way was in the sea,
    Your path in the great waters,
    And Your footsteps were not known.
    You led Your people like a flock
    By the hand of Moses and Aaron.
    Psalm 77

    Listening to this as I work on my book... I hope to one day touch people with my poetry the way he does with his art. He has such a SPECIFIC and unique way of touching the nostalgic nerves in your heart. As well as such a magical way of creating narratives and conversations in your mind that are only a product of your own imagination. I’ve never laid on the beach during a cold Janurary evening crying, clutching my chest in agony in an an attempt to keep my heart from falling out of my chest. One of the waves manages to spill my cup of tea on to my legs and the hot sensation juxtaposed against the frigid ness that surrounds, reminds me of a Warmer time in my life.

    I think this evokes such a perfect feeling of anxiety - the ebbs and swells of the ocean reflecting the turbulence of the music and your emotions so well. Because when you're trapped in uncertainty and the memory/effects of trauma and fear, everything feels like it's too much; like it would be enough to drown you. So it's like every day you take a deep breath, hoping the fear will pass, not knowing how long you'll have to hold your breath, hoping that you'll break the surface in time, but not knowing that you will. And even after that, there's the heartbreaking realisation that another wave is building, and another, and another...
    Ultimately, I think the only rescue from this is to reach out and ask for help. And realise that although it feels like it, you're not alone.

I sat at my room and listened to it over and over again. Felt that song, over and over again. I was feeling exactly like this. Overwhelmed. Drowning. My mind was thinking so badly about stop trying to swim, my body was trying so hard to lead me toward the bottom of the ocean. I felt mentally exhausted and my body was so damn tired, but then everytime i came towards the end of the song instead of putting a end to everything i just pressed the repeat button again and again. You floated me through this night Keaton. Your work has been the air inside my lungs and the strength to keep swimming for so long that i felt like i must write you something back. I’m too sad to tell you about 'I’m Too Sad to Tell You'
    [by Juliet Jacques]
    Sometimes, journalists call me and beg me to tell them about Bas Jan Ader. I’ve always told them it’s too sad to talk about, but as time has passed, they’ve become more persistent, so I’ve decided to tell you about 'I’m Too Sad to Tell You'. But this is the last time.
    *
    I studied with Bas Jan in Los Angeles. One day he invited me to his studio. He arrived as I did, camera in hand, and led me inside. He handed me the camera, stood against the wall and started weeping. I turned on the camera and made the lens stare at him.
    After three minutes and twenty-two seconds, the 16mm film ran out. Immediately, the tears stopped, the last one leaving his cheek the moment the film finished.
    I put the cap back on the lens and turned to leave. He tapped me on the shoulder, then led me to a café, bought me coffee and sat down.
    "Did you walk here?" he asked. I nodded. "You saw anti-war protesters everywhere, yes?" I nodded again.
    "Why?"
    "Well … they believe America has no right to be in Vietnam," I replied. "And they’re angry about the senseless loss of life."
    "You’ve read the papers," said Bas Jan. "They’ve misunderstood - perhaps deliberately. The war stimulates their anger, but it doesn’t generate it. Intellectually, those protestors think the war is wrong, yes; but their protest provides an outlet for emotions that they aren’t allowed to express. The fundamental emotion is sadness - the most painful feeling, and the hardest to comprehend. People feel angry because they can’t understand their sadness - the way society shuns those who make it explicit means they have to repress it, and it becomes anger."
    "So why isn’t everyone out protesting?"
    "Because people act on their anger in different ways. Some people protest against wars; some make them. Some don’t express the anger at all - they feel they’re not allowed to express anger any more than sadness - and they become depressed. That’s why we’ve made this film."
    "Won’t it make people more depressed?"
    "No. It will make people reconnect with the raw emotion they repressed as they became adults, and force them to confront it."
    "Why not challenge them with happiness?" I said. "The happiness we all felt in our childhood."
    "The happiness we claim to remember from our childhoods," he replied. "I think that before people can even contemplate happiness, they have to understand their sadness."
    "People will say the film is too much for them."
    "They will become ready."
    "You think you’re Christ."
    "I’m not dying for anyone!" he declared. "I just make films."
    "How will people know you’re not faking it?"
    Bas Jan stood, without looking at me, took his camera and left. I didn’t call him: I heard nothing from him for several years, until I heard that 'I’m Too Sad to Tell You' was screening in Los Angeles. Bas Jan’s handwritten title flashed silently across the frame, then for the next three minutes and twenty-two seconds, his head rolled in genuine anguish, tears streaming down his cheeks.
    I felt a tap on my shoulder.
    "You’re crying," said Bas Jan.
    "You made me."
    "My next work will make you happy," he said. "Come to my studio tomorrow."
    *
    His door was open when I arrived.
    "You inspired me this," said Bas Jan as I cast my eyes upon the boat that dominated the tiny studio. "This is the Ocean Wave. It’s the only tangible part of my next project, 'In Search of the Miraculous'. You think it’s very small. It is - only 13ft. When I sail from Massachusetts to Falmouth in England, it will become the smallest craft ever to cross the Atlantic."
    "That’s insane!"
    "The project will hopefully contain elements of what some consider insanity. The mental voyage is far more important than the physical one. Amidst the calmness of the ocean, without any distractions, my mind shall be focused purely on attacking the roots of human sadness, until it can only collapse and give way to pure happiness."
    "How do you propose to do that?"
    "By focusing upon nothing else, until I’ve found the answer," he said. "The journey I record in my logbooks shall be purely psychological. When I return to land, I shall publish them. They will show the way."
    "You imagine yourself finding a universal formula for endless happiness?"
    "Of course not! I hope to find happiness for myself, within myself. It’s up to other people whether or not they follow my example."
    "It’s too much for you. You’ll go mad."
    "This is an experiment. If I fail, I fail."
    You think you’re Christ, I thought, but I didn’t repeat myself. I shook his hand, wished him luck and walked away.
    *
    The telegram arrived as I was alone in my flat, half-watching a family strive to win thousands of dollars on a quiz show.
    EMOTIONAL PATTERNS ESTABLISHED BEFORE CONSCIOUS MEMORY STOP SO THE FIRST STEP IS THE ONLY STEP STOP ACCEPTANCE OF SADNESS IS VICTORY OVER SADNESS STOP HUMANS LOOK FOR HAPPINESS WHEN THEY SHOULD BE SEEKING CONTENTMENT STOP THE MIRACULOUS HAS BEEN FOUND AND THE SEARCH CAN STOP
    The Ocean Wave was found drifting off the coast of Ireland, nine months and two weeks after I received the telegram. They never found Bas Jan Ader, or his notebooks. When I heard, I sent a copy of the telegram to several national newspapers, all of which said that Bas Jan was not famous enough for them to publish it, especially as its content might upset emotionally fragile readers. Since then, I had kept it in a box with the paintings I have been unable to sell, and it’s too sad to show it to anyone.

    This is what art should be. Moving. Leaving in a state of restlessness, commotion. Making you feel and think in equal proportions. I loved this piece- both music and the video itself. It's uplifting and heartbreaking at the same time. Incredible.
