Best New Years ever!
Second season coming soon, this january. 2021 at least starts off good.
There's an OVA about influenza
love from tokyo!
did you know they have an episode of covid-19 as their latest release?
In time for season 2 and cells at work black which is a more adult themed one edit I commented before I started watching 😐
The translation didn't make it obvious but the red blood cells that were transfused were speaking in a different dialect.
Wait really? I dont recall any of that
@@ducks7015 you didn't recall them speaking in a slightly different Japanese dialect?
In the English dub they all have southern accents, if I remember correctly
@@embrefrosste6044 yeah thats normally how its interpreted in English
The transfused red blood cells were mostly speaking in either an Australian accent or Canadian accent but I'm not sure
One of the things I always liked about this episode is that the transfused blood cells are dressed for cold weather. That says to me that they were from blood that had been kept in cold storage.
Huh...I never thought of it that way.
Let's not forget they speak a different dialect
Or given it is Japan and the different way of speaking there is a chance the blood is from someone living say in Hokkaido where it is usually a lot colder than Tokyo.
They WERE kept in cold storage
If you watch the episode, after they were taken out from the donor, they were centrifuged and kept in cold storage.
It wasn't in this video, but in the episode, the blood cells mention how they were pulled from their host body and centrifuged (high speed spinning/separation), therefore, they would have been in cold storage ready for transfusion. It's also why we probably don't really get to see the transfused platelets and plasma that Dr. Hope mentions
Also, as someone who's read the manga, let me tell you that this isn't the only time you'll be seeing these new blood cells :)
That Killer T-Cell being like "You idiot! Don't be a wuss! Live!" made me laugh so much
That has the same energy as "dying is gay"

can't wait for its new season and the code black!!
There is an episode 14 tho for season 1
@@standersam4097 Agreed! Still an OVA though but a canon OVA nevertheless!
@@standersam4097 is that the pocari sweat one?
I love the attention to detail in this series.
Actual doctor: "Oh look at that text on the backpack of the adorable little platelet, that is-" _flashbacks to medical school lessons on clotting_
I agree. I remember learning about clotting and plasminogen pathways and it was the hardest part of my human health courses.
Fun fact, that might be lost on most english speakers; the blood cells from the transfusion not only has a slightly different uniform, they're also speaking in a different accent
I always wondered if that was representative of a different blood type (like the foriegn blood is O-)
@@peacefulinvasion684 Nah. It's most likely to make it clear that the blood comes from a different person. It's the easiest way to demonstrate that without outright saying it.
The blood that got transfuse had Kansai dialect, i love this little things. It show how detail oriented the author is.
@@therewasoldcringe The new red blood cells wearing thicker clothing might also be alluding to the fact that they were kept in cold storage.
in the dub the new blood speaks southern while the main/old speak with no accent
13:11 & 13:19
He puts on a brave face, but you can see Dr. Hope getting choked up! He cares for these precious red blood cell characters just like we do! I love it so much! ❤
That story you told was the same for my mum when she gave birth to me. She took a lot of blood transfusions in order to survive and so she always tells me that we owe blood now. She can’t donate her blood due to certain issues, but I can. So I donate fairly often to make up for what was used to save her when I was born. And of course I don’t know the exact amount so I’ll just keep doing it, no reason to just meet the amount and then stop.
Anyway good job gettin it done right before season 2 and black are going to air, and they’re going to be airing at the same time. Obviously you won’t be able to keep up with both as you’re busy and such, but I look forward to watching your videos on those too!
I'm also someone who, like your mum, cannot donate my whole blood, so I want to thank you, from the bottom of my _heart,_ (pun intended) for paying your blood forward, and helping to make up for those of us who will never be able to contribute as much as we need to take.
Thank you for having been a constant blood donor. You make the world a better place.
Thank you for giving life forward
That's great. I don't donate blood but involved in phase 1 clinical trial (healthy volunteers) because you can only choose either one as the trial take amount of blood pretty much the same amount. But rather than one go, they jab us 3 times a day for however long the trial is 😅.
I really want to donate my blood but Idk if ppl who overweight can donate their blood. Because I am big :'
My whole family are O- blood donors. My Sister and I are also missing a common antigin in our blood that allows us to donate to newborns.
That's amazing! I'd love to donate blood, but I'm chronically anaemic (my doctor said that if we somehow managed to get it under control, then maybe I could, but it's not looking likely sadly).
I'm O+ while husband is O-
This is amazing, thank you all so much! You probably saved a lot of people!
A+ here
I'm an universal donor too. But sadly, I don't fit the standar for donating blood T_T beacuse of my heigth and weight doesn't reach the minimum required in my country. But in here you are a donor unless you or your family said the opposite. So when I was 18 I decided to make sure anyone couldn't take away my right to donate and became a listed donor for organs in case of necesary. Also, I've make sure to tell everyone around me that I am a donor, is my right and I want it to be protected and respected. Hopefully someday i will be able to donate blood.
Is it me or is someone cutting onions near you Doc🤔

I knew the coagulation cascade once. Then I finished the exam. Gone.
I remember watching a video about secondary coagulation on Khan Academy once. The activation pathway was confusing as hell, and I remembered it for like only 5 minutes.
Guess it's a good thing I'm not a medical school student...
@@BicyclesMayUseFullLane I work in pathology so it helps to understand it. It rings a few bells but nothing like when I was a student
I've got to admit, this was a hard one to watch. My grandmother died this way. She received massive trauma during a bad car accident. The doctors at the hospital did their best, but she was losing blood faster than they could transfuse, and the damage was too bad to fix. My mother had to give the doctors permission to stop giving blood. I think it was probably the hardest thing my mom ever had to do.
I'm sorry for your loss. I lost my great uncle the same way.
@@alexandralugo1743 Thank you. I'm sorry for your loss as well.
Ok I'm sorry if she was losing more blood that they could transfuse

U may hate ur body for many esthetic reasons.
But always, ur body loves u.
*Aesthetic
@@luther0013 I read that esthetic is the American way, while aesthetic is the Brittish, so both are correct.
*hugs self*
what about autoimmune diseases
@@Daiacos that's what I was going to say hahahahah
I mean, I have an autoimmune disease, so is it okay for me to hate my body for an aesthetic reason?
About a year ago, I was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. Over the next six months, I did five rounds of chemotherapy, each one requiring me to receive several blood and platelet transfusions as my bone marrow rebuilt itself. I've now been cancer-free for almost half a year, and I am eternally grateful to the people who donated the blood and platelets that kept me going through my treatment. To all the blood donors out there, thank you.
I kind of wonder how a show like Cells at Work! would depict the kind of leukemia I had.
I'm a blood donor and comments like this encourage me to keep doing it.
@@ghostmoon7965 Keep going! :D
I want to give my blood more often but since I have anemia, I can only give it once a year...
I'll try to eat more meat
One thing I love about the blood transfusion scene is that the new blood cells, on top of having different uniforms, also have a different accent from the native cells. It represents how the body they come from is a different region where these cells grew independently of the ones we've come to know and love in the show, thus they have a different accent. Another thing it could represent is that, in Japan, there's a belief that blood type impacts your personality. Them having different uniforms means they're a different but compatible blood type, so supposedly a different personality?
This man was full of life at the beginning of 2020. He has been working so much overtime hasnt he. I dont know why I realized right now but checking his thumbnails through the months he progressively grows more and more tired.

Yet he found time to bring us a little happiness. :)

"Dont be a wuss! Live!"
Jotaro to Joseph
Is that a Jojo reference
They're cartoon cells. And the episode makes me cry every time. It even made my mom tear up, and she's a retired nurse!
Finally, 2020 has completed.
Fun fact: Around 18:08, the new RBC came from outer world, is speaking north-east accents in Japanese. If UK dubs exists, original cells speaking standard Rondon speakings, and the newcomers may speaking Scottish or Irish.
"O'Negative's me name. Type O'Negative. Right feckin' mess someone made of this place, aye? Let's get to work, boyos!"
In the English dub, they all started to speak in Southern accents while Cherry (red blood cell) was talking in her usual neutral American accent. Loved the distinction!
In elementary and middle school, it was a treat to watch “Bill Nye the science guy” and “magic school bus” in science class after a big test or just before a school break. I can definitely see this series being used for the same thing. I know if this series had come out when I took biology classes that I would have been more excited to learn about it.
This is something we've been looking forward to. It was worth the wait.

Happy New Year doctor. I was waiting for this.
ps. transfused red blood cells are also speaking in different dilect to further emphasize that they are foreign
Oh, that is such a nice touch! Very creative!
In fact depending on the dub the dialect changes too. I think the Japanese was a northern japanese dialect and hokaido region. For the american english dub they are from the south
@@goldcharizard of course they are
@@dontspikemydrink9382 they do that for like literally any Japanese dialect sadly. It kind of makes sense for Kansai or any southern part of the country but it really doesnt make sense in this context.

I heard that Cells at Work manga will end tackling Covid-19.
Yeah. . .I don't think so. There hasn't been a manga update on the main series in years.
Yeah, that was in the official HS twitter in may
I got a blood transfusion yesterday and I made my mom watch this episode this morning with me and we both cried since I almost went into shock :(
Cant wait to see your reaction to Cells at Work Code black. Dealing with the body of an alcoholic, ED, blood transfusion and energy drinks among other things. My favorite of the manga by a long shot
I think he already did. Check his playlist
Been waiting for this but I know you’re busy so I’ve been patient
He’s the Doctor and we’ve been patients
A Turtle has also been a patient
The most inspiring part about this episode for me is at the end, when that little red blood cell we've been following for the entire series shows uncharacteristic resolve, saying that while there's only so much she can do, as the world itself literally dies around her, she'll continue to do her job until she's no longer able.
I've tried to adopt the same ethic. Not just death, she stared the apocalypse in the eye, and she didn't blink.
Dr. Hope, sir, I commend you for your continued selflessness during this pandemic. Please stay safe.
Yea and not like the other guy
This... Somehow surprised me in that it makes so much more sense now that I was SO COLD after I had my son. I had a postpartum hemorrhage where I lost enough blood where I was juuuuuuuuuust on the precipice of needing a transfusion but not quite. And I kept needing more and more warm blankets cause I just couldn't get warm
Can't help but notice that he looks quite a bit more tired than in the last episode. Being a doctor in a pandemic must be reallhy exhausting. I really do appreciate that he found the time to complete this reaction series.
I really, really hope that this series will be accepted in schools as learning material. Honestly, as student, it was a pain for me to learn, how the body protects itself and I wish I had this anime to learn from 😭😅
It‘s just beautiful and now I can really say, that I can understand better, how our body works... Even so, I am still confusing veines and arteries 🤣
I've tried actually watching this anime for myself, but without the running commentary from this channel it just isn't the same. So here's to covering season 2 :-)
Half a year in the making, so glad it's finally out. Love the explanations and how you broke down all the important scenes in this episode. Can't wait for your reaction on Cells at Work Season 2 and Cells at Work Black, thanks for your service Dr. Hope!
OMG! That happenes to me! After I gave birth to my second child I lost a looot of blood. I received 3 blood bags.

When he said studying blood clot is a nightmare, he does not kid. That, and ATP production, has had me on sleepless many nights

Thanks for the video! I think during the pandemic Cells at Work, especially these last two episodes, make us *ordinary people* appreciate all the front-line workers out there even more, cause this is basically how they feel I imagine. The world is going through an enormous shock right now, just like the body in the series, and if not for all the front-line workers I can't imagine how bad it would've been for society. Thank you all so much, I wish the world could appreciate you more ❤️ Happy New Year everyone :)

Red blood cell and her padawan... Dr. your Star Wars side is showing! :D
The Black spin-off is so good too.
It goes to greatly effective lenghts at portraying an unhealthy lifestyle's body, and does so in a way that makes viewers go "wait is this what's happening in my body just for doing this one unhealthy thing? ...I should stop".
Even with full awareness of it being just a metaphor, it's just that damn effective at portraying the effects of bad life habits. a true goldmine.
Also, fun fact! The blood transfer in this episode actually came from the body featured in Black! You'll notice right away that the uniforms are the same.
Really? They seem a bit _too_ chipper to have come from either of _those_ bodies...
@@Dusk_Shade 1-it'd be after the end of Black, when things somewhat change.

@@OpXarxa First, Jesus that was a fast response.
Second, you definitely have a point, but the thought would be that the poor guys would still have PTSD and such. Imagine the first time this body has alcohol, and all the transfused cells either break down sobbing or be like "ah shit, here we go again"

16:51 "ABO Antigen" is somehow censored in YT Auto Subtitle lol. And looks like Doc is ready for Season 2 just in time!
I don't know if it's censored or if the AI just couldn't understand what he said?
The word ABO written in lower case is a pejorative term used to refer to an Australian Aboriginal person, so I think that's why it's censored.
I can think of one other apart from @Green Wren's reason, but I don't think it's a serious enough thing to warrant a censor from Auto Subtitle.

Well done! Honestly, watching your analysis of this series helped me learn a lot about immunology. And knowing at least something about it helped a lot when Covid struck. I didn't feel quite so ignorant and helpless. You're a great doctor and a superb teacher, and if hospital work ever stops being an option for you I encourage you to strongly consider a classroom.

Thank you! I was waiting so long for this.
I’ve been looking forward to this for so long
I mentioned this in the comments of the last video, I cried to these last two episodes. Obviously, this episode is very sad, but the subject matter touched on something personal to me.
My grandfather passed away last February from complications brought on by hemorrhagic shock.
When I had heard about him being in the hospital, I dropped everything to go see him and was running around the hospital frantically trying to find him. When I found him, he was just lying there, hooked up to all these machines. On my way to the hospital, I received a text from my father saying that the sub-arachnoid was uncontrolled and that an elequis reversal seemed to be effective. Laymen's terms, the hemorrhaging had lessened. While at the hospital, I learned that my grandfather had a no resuscitation order in place that hadn't been honored so that news made his eventual passing a little easier to swallow. He died the day after my visit. I still have some regrets, some things I wish I had done while he was alive to see it, but for the most part, I've come to terms with it. I still get sad when I think about it, and these last two episodes definitely make me think about it.
This person clearly lives life on the edge. Definitely has an appetite for life with little care for personal regard.
If you mean the human body this takes place in. With the ease with which it catches various diseases and injuries, I assume it’s the average young child.
