Tadamichi Kuribayashi is perhaps the most underrated commander of the Axis Powers. Not only was he a skilled, pragmatic general who inflicted some of highest casualty rates the United States ever suffered during the war, but he was also a compassionate, rational human being.
He evacuated civilians so they wouldn’t get caught in the crossfire, he shared the hardships of his men living in appalling conditions, he visited wounded soldiers in the hospital, he forbade the use of banzai charges (believing them to be futile and a waste), and he openly opposed going to war with the U.S. (believing it to be last nation Japan should fight). It is said that the Japanese government sent Kuribayashi to Iwo Jima, knowing he wouldn’t make it off alive. Kuribayashi himself knew defending Iwo Jima was an inevitable defeat, but he also knew if the U.S. captured it, Japan would be in full range of American bombers. If defending Iwo Jima meant protecting his nation’s civilians from those bombs for even a little while longer, then he would gladly defend that island to his last breath. The Battle of Iwo Jima lasted for over a month and resulted in nearly 28,000 American casualties, and it climaxed with group of Japanese soldiers launching a sneak attack on an American encampment before being wiped out. It is said this group of Japanese soldiers was led by Kuribayashi himself, making him one of last generals to lead from the front and die in the front. The reason his body wasn’t identified in the aftermath is because he wore the uniform of a common soldier, not an officer.
Tadamichi Kuribayashi was one of the best men the Axis Powers had to offer during the war and it’s a shame he isn’t widely known like Erwin Rommel. I honestly can’t thank this film enough for giving him the recognition he rightfully deserves. Rest In Peace General Tadamichi Kuribayashi (1891-1945).

Banzai charges were banned since 1904 since the Siege of Port Arthur.
By 1944 Banzai charges were more of a thing you do if the situation has truly gone dire.
But of course in Iwo Jima it was a completely different story, most of the garrison was already demoralized and the hope of reinforcements coming was all but for nothing. So Banzai charges were done mostly out of desperation.

He only served briefly as the chief of staff of an army and otherwise was only commanding a division. As a divisional commander you do not strategically think out of the box in the way rommel or other field marshals did so he cannot be compared to them, he has no noteworthy achievements. In Iwo jima he used the difficult terrain to his advantage, but since world war two brought up thousands of generals like him most of them would have more or less been able to do the same thing. Iwo jima was doomed right from the start and he only perhaps postponed the inevitable outcome a little bit longer than another general would have.

Hey maybe they'll bypass the island and never come who knows. Will the tunnels even work? Will you starve before the Americans come? Like Eugene Sledge said on Okinawa "War is mostly waiting".

In the 77 years since the end of the war, Japan's SDF has not engaged in combat or murder in other countries.
but The United States has encouraged Japan to rearm, and the Korean War is the background to this.
And in 2024, the United States expects Japan to act as a bulwark against China.
Of course, Japan has no intention of sending troops to the continent as in the 20th century, and it does not have the economic and military power to do so.
As a Japanese person, I believe that Japan is aiming for a Swiss-style defense strategy.
However, it is also true that Japan's vassal state status in the United States cannot be erased.
In Japan, the war in Ukraine has sparked debate over whether to resume arms exports, the first since the Korean War, and plans are underway to develop a new generation of fighter jets in cooperation with the UK and Italy.

    The Constitution of Japan.
    CHAPTER II.
    RENUNCIATION OF WAR.
    Article 9.
Aspiring sincerely to an international peace based on justice and order, the Japanese people forever renounce war as a sovereign right of the nation and the threat or use of force as means of settling international disputes.
In order to accomplish the aim of the preceding paragraph, land, sea, and air forces, as well as other war potential, will never be maintained. The right of belligerency of the state will not be recognized.
※Under current legal interpretation, the Self-Defense Forces do not fall under "land, sea, and air forces, as well as other war potential," and are considered to have the minimum necessary right to self-defense.
Amendments to this Constitution shall be initiated by the Diet, through a concurring vote of two-thirds or more of all the members of each House, and thereafter shall be submitted to the people for ratification, which shall require the affirmative vote of a majority of all votes cast, either at a special referendum or at such election as the Diet shall specify.
Exclusively Defense is the basic stance of Japan's independent defense strategy since the end of World War II.
"Exclusively defense" is described as a passive defense strategy that follows the spirit of the Constitution, in which defensive forces are only used in the event of an armed attack by the other side, the form in which they are used is limited to the minimum necessary for self-defense, and the defensive forces possessed are also limited to the minimum necessary for self-defense. This definition has been used in subsequent Cabinet decisions in responses to questions in the Diet.
In other words, threatening attacks, preemptive attacks, retaliatory attacks, and attacks on enemy territory (with the exception of missile launch bases, etc.) are prohibited.
To put it simply, "You can't shoot until you're shot."
Furthermore, the Japanese Constitution prohibits military tribunals, so there is no military law.
There are also no related laws that allow for the arrest of spies from other countries.
To put it bluntly, Japan's security is a national defense strategy that assumes the presence of U.S. forces in Japan.
