  • Florian Ross wrote a fresh big band arrangement for "Twin Flame", composed by Marquis Hill, featuring Marquis Hill on trumpet, Karolina Strassmayer on alto saxophone and Billy Test on piano. Recorded at the WDR Studio 4 / Cologne in May 2019.
With his groovy and impulsive trumpet sound, Marquis Hill is one of the most promising "youngsters" on the American East Coast. Hill has worked with jazz greats such as Marcus Miller and Joe Lovano, among others. In addition, he maintains his own band "Blacktet" and with his musical playing he has managed to successfully overcome the boundaries between musical genres. His compositions include contemporary and classical jazz, Hip-Hop and R&B, but also Chicago House and Neo-Soul. Hill himself says about this: "It all comes from the same tree, - they simply blossomed from different branches."

Marquiss embodies the tradition of Black Classical Music. The intelligence and sensitivity of his approach is amazing. The influences of Roy Hargrove, Nicolas Payton, and Freddy Hubbard and many others are very present in his playing. Although you can hear the past in his playing, as you should, he is beautifully his on. He is an initiate of Black Classical Music.

Today I fortunately stumbled upon the wonderful trumpet playing of Marquis Hill while checking out his video on how to produce sub-Tone on trumpet, very fortunately I must add! He sounds equally fantastic here and I've found a new trumpet idol! Kudos Marquis, you are a joy to listen to as is the WDR Big Band! Nice arrangement and Karolina Strassmayer's alto playing was superb too!

Something about this tune (probably the use of Maj7th chords) put me in mind of classic 1970s sounds. I'd love to hear the WDR band take on some Hank Levy tunes from that era! Hank wrote a lot for the Stan Kenton band and was known for his tunes in odd meters. My personal favorite is "Chain Reaction" in 13/8 (3-3-2-2-3). There's a nice version on CZcams by the U.S. Army Field Band, and one that's more "far out" by Don Ellis. The arrangement is bit less subtle and sophisticated than what WDR usually does, but perhaps they could bring more nuance to the sound.

Some have dark skin, some light. Some wear glasses, some do not. And yet, they all have great musical talent, and they perform excellently together. What point could you possibly be making, pray tell?

I swear if I see one more big band video in the studio I'm going to trow up. One of the main reason jazz is dead is because jazz musicians haven't kept up with the times. We consume media so fast. And we need to be visually intrasted also. No one wants to see a bunch of dudes in a room for a music video. You need to tell a story . When you write the song your are telling a story . Now tell that same story with your video. I'm not just being a cenique I truly want jazz to be hear by more people. I hope you see past the harsh comment and understand my point.

Jazz is not dead. This video has received more than 42000 views at the time I responded. It is about the music, not technology. This is something that is missing with the videos of today. Quality can not be compromised or mimicked. It has to stand on its own.

Sorry, but if you were going to create a rock style video with big production values, we wouldn’t get nearly as much music output. If you subscribe with WDR, you are constantly rewarded with new, challenging big band sounds that have great variety and outstanding quality.

If you don't like it, don't watch. The ironic thing about your criticism is that this song is very much modern jazz. 😂 It's just arranged for a big band setting. Marquis Hill flirts with many genres within jazz.
