[PTX] Avi Kaplan hits an F#1 Live!

- Headphones are advised! Major thanks to 'Blake Richter' for recording PTX live! Just a short video basically showcasing Avi's INCREDIBLE F#1 that he sang in 'Natural Disaster'. As is explained in the video, the Live version of the song was taken down by half a step, so Avi turned that G1 into an F#1! Impressive!
I may do more videos like this in the future, maybe as part of a mini-series where I just showcase individual, yet impressive, notes by various singers. If I manage to think of a name for it, I'll re-name this video. In the meantime, I'll just have to deal. Lol. Anyway, I hope to get some good notes showcased and uploaded for you guys! Hope you enjoy!

I've been to a PTX's live before, and Avi's voice was so low that the ENTIRE stadium was LITERALLY shaking, and for a moment I thought my heart's going to explode.
I like how no one really makes ANY noise until Avi's voice starts blasting out of the speakers.

mitch's #1 trash I made the mistake and my eardrums are THROBBING. Common sense should have told me to turn it all the way down. I turned it down half way and the vibration thru my earphones was STILL extreme. Holy shit he's amazing!

(honestly I think singular they would all get three votes on any of the the Got Talent shows and probably The Voice shows as well.) Super-bass singers are a rarity. Avi seems even more extreme as he apparently hasn't focused just on singing bass. He's got a natural skill combined with an apparent fascination with perfecting it in many ways.
Bass singers are hell to find at the best of times.......he's on a different level from almost anyone I've ever heard. (I don't know shit about singing) The only other bass singer that amazed me was Larry Hooper. I wasn't even alive when he was. (Something about the clarity of sounds that deep......I don't know what that is)

Either I need better speakers, or Avi just surpassed what they can clearly produce. My speakers just have bass noise, there is no clear sound... I can hear it properly through my headphones, but I think Avi has just beaten my speakers.

I think one of my favorite concerts was pentatonix at the hollywood bowl. they asked the whole crowd to be dead silent so avi could do a solo song without a mic. the most quiet i’ve ever heard a group of people, not a peep the whole time. just avis voice filling the whole fucking hollywood bowl…magic

Its incredible how much he's grown! A little over a year ago on twitter he said an F# was the lowest he'd ever gone (and he was sick when he did it) but now he's blasting it out with a crazy amount of power! Man, if this keeps up, I wonder what else he'll be able to do.

I have a 7.1 3D surround sound headset omg! Nevermind your ears it will blow your head off lmao. But it makes Avi's bass sound even better but nothing like when I saw them live it literally vibrated the whole room and you feel it through your whole body.

just a thought: what avi is doing here is not "singing" in the familiar sense. he is not producing sound in the modal register, the "chest voice." instead he is vibrating his entire soft palate to produce the shaking, airy tone he uses at that section. anyone (on any part, male or female) can do this technique; even i as a tenor 1 can approximate an F#1 using it. the difference is that i can't really control the pitch when using this technique, while avi presumably hits the note on the head every time. plus i imagine they turn up the bass EQ's and the subwoofer for those notes.
I'm not saying it's not impressive. i just feel like what avi can do with his normal voice is even more impressive than something like this
I'm not sure which technique you're referring to, but I know you don't mean vocal fry. At the end of the day, he's still a bass singer, and whilst it is the extreme part of his lower register, Avi has proven that high-end 1st octave notes (G1, A1 and B1) are indeed manageable for him in his chest voice.

It sounds more like Avi is doing something with his tongue and lips to create that distinctive sound (i.e. partially-closed mouth, kinda like blowing a raspberry into the microphone). This could be the reason why the F#1 sounds louder than the D2s as well (either that, or the sound crew keep doing things, like you suggested). In actuality, I imagine the F#1 is quite weak, but he's using the microphone as well as his mouth to amplify and project the sound. But that's just my take on things.
now that i think about it that raspberry technique could conceivably work in a live setting if the mic were turned up high enough. ive used a similar technique while beatboxing
the technique i was referring to is definitely not vocal fry it's a slow vibration in the back of the throat that to the extent of my knowledge doesn't involve the vocal cords much or at all. i unfortunately don't know what it's called so if you dont know what im referring to i dont know where to direct you

giggityguy I think, you´re right. If you watch another live videos, you can hear just raspberry technique, or something similar. I think, that Avi hit the tone (which is easy to hear with "full bass" system, I can do that too and it causes an earthquake in the room), and Kevin does a raspberry.
If you listen closely enough, you can hear him articulate his signature "yeah" on the note.
What I believe is going on is this:
We humans actually have a second set of larger vocal folds situated above the ones we usually use, the folds used in the modal register. They will ring an octave lower if used at the same time as our modal folds (as in certain styles of mongolian/tuvan throat singing. With practice, one can isolate them to sing those low notes.
I'm fairly sure that's what he's doing, because I can do it too (only after listening to Avi)
