- Before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Southeast Asian tourism sites were bursting at the seams. However, the slowdown presents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to deconstruct the travel industry. Stakeholders and industry players are now pushing for sustainable tourism with growth that will not come at the expense of the well-being of people and the planet.
Countries like Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia, which are highly dependent on tourism, are shutting down some of their natural sites during the slowdown in order to allow nature to recuperate. Green tourism is also being introduced to protect the environment and increase appreciation of nature.
Efforts are also focused on the negative aspects of conventional tourism on the environment and the importance of enhancing the cultural integrity of local people. The aim of introducing these environmentally friendly tourism activities is also to preserve nature for future generations.

As an American who has traveled to Southeast Asia multiple times, I 100% support small fees and permits to natural areas in order to limit damage and promote environmental health and restoration. Ecotourism has so much potential! Keeping the oceans and jungles in good condition will keep the allure of visiting alive!
