Painting & Basing Winter US - Getting Ready for Bolt Action V3! [How I Paint Things]

  • We've had a peek at the upcoming platoon organization charts for Bolt Action, and as well as the core rifle platoon, it looks like players are going to be able to theme their forces around what support options they take. Now, the 'platoon commander' requirement for a lot of them doesn't specify that it'd necessarily be an officer... but it doesn't hurt to have a few extra replacement butterbars around, especially with Bolt Action 3rd Edition's launch box being plastic winter US forces and Fallschirmjaeger!

    Good old Russian Uniform WWII. Good for almost everything. Except Russian uniforms from WWII. (those were less green and more golden brown, as I understand it, VMC Khaki Grey being a close fit)

    Another great mini (!), US uniforms had always been a bit tough to obtain, expecially those of early war.
    Now there are a lot of colours useful for this, very effective trick for 5 o'clock, when I was doing 1/35 figures I used (strongly diluited) Feldgrau.

    One thing on the gloves. There were two styles of the standard issued ones. One was green wool with black leather sewn on the palm side. The other style is actually the style still issued to this day which is black leather with green wool liner.
    Then there were all manner of special issued gloves and mittens as well as woolen ones knitted by the red cross.
    In this officers case it would be most likely he would have acquired the green wool with black leather palm if he wasn't able to get his hands on mittens

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  Před 19 dny +1

      Go figure! I didn't realize that some of those gloves were still the same style. I'd read about gloves and mittens coming from the Red Cross or even care packages from home, so the colour of them didn't strike me as being all that important, but tidbits like this are super helpful to know!

    Dear Sonic, I want to tell you that I truly love your content and I appreciate you enormously!
    I’m currently in a place where hobby time is nearly non existent! Having your videos motivates me to no ends. Seeing how relatively easily you get such great results, makes me think that all is not lost. In fact I’ll paint my Turnip28 guys according to your method… once I get around to building them that is! 😂
    Thank you, sir! Thank you for being around!

    Outside of their own page and a few individuals on Reddit, I've yet to have seen RKX figures in the wild (CZcams/online or otherwise). I think with this painting guide I'm completely sold on them! Especially since they've got the M-1943 uniforms that I do so love in addition to the more classic winter M-1939 overcoat. Thanks for the showing/guide!

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  Před 22 dny +1

      It's strange, since I've seen quite a few Finnish armies made up of miniatures by the same sculptor - I've got a feeling it's just that RKX as a store front aren't that well known, which is a shame, since they've got some cracking stuff on offer. If folks find it through this video, all the better! I'd love to see more of their miniatures on the table.

    I tend not to do eyes in WW2 unless pulpy type characters for adventure gaming, I just leave shadows to bring the grimness of war to the figures with a strong highlight on the top of the cheeks, shows well on the tabletop.

    Nice results - and RKX is new to me, they have some good looking figures and a couple of free sample STLs. I know not everyone wants to commit to winter-themed figures and terrain, but I tend to paint figures in greatcoats much faster than regular uniforms.

    Love your videos! A very dark brown skin shade over the entire eyes or even eye area has worked really well for me. This scale I feel is simply too small and hard to be able to give the detail that eyes need to be believable.

    Always enjoy your videos, Troy. I noticed that for a time you were using Strong Tone or Strong Skin shade mixed with Speedpaint medium but have since moved away from that. Any reason why? Just curious as I always enjoy trying out new mixes etc. Thanks!

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  Před 23 dny +1

      Colour and flow, mostly. The juice mix is a little more subtle and a bit warmer than the Strong Skin Shade by itself, weirdly. The flow properties of including Speedpaint Medium to thin out the shades are super useful, but I do like the more fluid version you get with Lahmian Medium and the new Reikland Fleshshade.

    I love it. My worry with these kind of elaborate bases is that they are too fragile for handling and real gaming... are they? I mean the tufts and all those snowy chunks.

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  Před 22 dny +1

      Not at all. The snow paste is dry to the touch after about an hour, and within three or four hours it's rock solid. That stuff's not coming off without a chisel - the miniature will break before the base does! 😂

    How would you recreate the sonic tonic without using citadel products?

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  Před 22 dny +1

      The short answer is that I wouldn't. The slightly longer answer is that the properties of the wash depend on the materials used; it's possible I could find a third party artist's medium or something, and a warm reddish wash to use instead, but I've spent long enough fussing over getting this mix right. The important thing is that the ingredients should be widely available and easily accessible - hard to guarantee if I find something that works out of a German stationary store. 😅
