Duvet. Comforter. These terms get thrown around a lot, and it can get really confusing when you're trying to buy the right bedding for you.
So what's the real difference between duvets and comforters?
Check out our full written article with detailed notes here:

Traditionally, a comforter consists of two pieces of fabric woven together in a quilt pattern. Between these two pieces, the comforter holds some type of filling (either down, cotton, or a synthetic down alternative).
A duvet is more like a bag of filling without a quilted design. It is placed in a duvet cover just like a pillow is placed in a pillowcase.
The issue becomes complicated when companies use the terms interchangeably. Many comforters can act as a duvet insert, and they even have tabs sewn to the edge in order to secure the comforter within the duvet cover.
Do you want something easy to wash? You might want to choose a duvet. Washing a duvet is very easy, because you can simply remove the duvet cover and wash it at home. A comforter is much more cumbersome, and if it's a down comforter, you will most likely have to take it to the dry cleaner.
Do you hate making your bed? A duvet will probably work for you. Many people are sleeping European Style now, where they ditch the top sheet and just use a duvet. It is easier to deal with one piece of bedding instead of many layers.
If you like a layered look on your bed, a comforter will most likely be the better choice. Also, some people feel like duvets twist and make them feel stuck. Comforters are less likely to cause these issues.

I'm danish, and always wondered why Americans sleep like they do, under one/a "blanket" it seems, so I googled it, and ended up here 😀 In Denmark everyone (as far as I know) has a comforter/duvet, and then has several covers for them, which they wash/change approximately once a week. I don't know anyone who doesn't use covers, it feels wierd, and kinda unhygienic not to, and they come in all kinds of fabrics. A cotton/satin blend is best, if you ask me 😀 We don't wash the comforters itself as often as the covers, but when we do, we use tennisballs in the dryer, to avoid the filling getting all clumped up. You can buy one large comforter to share (or not 😀), but most people have their own one person comforter, even when co-sleeping with their significant other, just because it's more comfortable that way, and it's definitely much nicer to not wake up under a wet comforter, if you have a partner that sweats when they're sleeping 😀 I personally prefer to sleep on the side, roll up one comforter, and well spoon it 😁, and then I have a second comforter on top of me. Not sure anyone needed this information, but now you have it, you're welcome! 😁

Watch the part where he shows that some duvets now come with ties so they can be tied onto a comforter. Reason for them is so that you don't have to wash the comforter (bulky and sometimes down filled = special care in washing) as often. Remove the duvet and wash that. In germany you have a duvet with a cover which you sleep under and you change that cover every week. And about 50% of people will have a comforter on top of the duvet that stays there all the time and usally matches the room decor.
The second opition is also often used for the beds of married couples since each person gets their own duvet and having a comforter that covers everything on top makes it look neater and more coherent.

Well, if you all are coming to Northern Europe, especially Scandinavia and Finland, a duvet is mandatory in a regular bed making. Like, there is no other option except for a duvet. A comforter, what is that really? I mean, here we have a blanket (well, mainly we use these in the living room couch) OR a duvet in our bed stores, comforter is not existing here. Same probably goes for the rest of Europe, we don't primary use the layer type of bedding that is common in America. Most European hotels don't offer comforters, we have 9 of 10 duvets. Some said that American use comforters because of the climate, in very hot nights you often just want a blanket and a flat sheet. I always wondered why American beds often has several layers of fabric...

A lot of bed sheet sets in America come with a comforter which is basically a big fluffy blanket, often they come with a cover sewn onto it with patterns or a design or something. They’re made to be able to he washed at home (unless they’re the very fancy kinds like he is describing in the video)

Yes, this is how it's done. A comforter usually comes in those sets in the store or have designs already printed on the comforter itself. You would probably put a blanket under it for warmth like mom did. Sure you can use a duvet "cover" over it to change your decor. In France a "duvet" only applies to white, thick, down-filled quilted covers that are extremely warm. Any other filling is a "couette" but looks the same. Since they are white, you buy a duvet cover...for change of bedroom design, cleanliness, whatever. I live in France and bring comforters from the US because duvets/couettes are so hot I spend all night kicking them on and off even in winter.
