Had I been the investigating officer attending to the victim of the first break-in incident, I would simply just tell her: “You deserved it!” Looked at her haughtiness when dissuaded against not using a padlock. Was she instructed by the director to act that way? If so, she should win an Oscar. Lol.
That would not be a helpful reply and would also be highly unprofessional and unethical. I think the more helpful thing to do is to convince her by actually showing how using a padlock can prevent someone entering.

Now that I think about it, if I ever own a house I’ll probably get a reinforced padlock with alarm or booby trap, and grill lock at the bottom as countermeasures which although might be excessive is beneficial in the long run.
