  • Hey everyone in this week’s video we are continuing our “Did the Early Church…” Series. In this series we already covered: “Did the Early Christians Pray to the Saints?” And “Did the Early Church Believe in Sacred Tradition?” This week are covering the topic of Confession and the Early Church. Did the Early Church Believe and Do the Sacrament of Confession, or is it something new to the Catholic Church? Let’s look at what the Early Christians had to say on the matter!
    #confession #earlychurch #catholicchurch
In this the Series of “What Did the Early Christians…”, we look at what the Early Christians taught and believed. The purpose of this series is to analyze what the Early Church taught and to see if we still engage in those teachings today. Often times there will be claims made against a teaching within the Church by non-Catholics, the root of the claim is often “the Catholic Church invented that years after Christ”. To combat those claims, let’s look at what the Early Christians said by looking at quotations that they said on the matter. Commonly we focus on 4th century to 1st century Christians. This reasoning behind this is: many non-Catholics claim that the Catholic Church was not the Church Christ established in Matthew 16:18, but instead the Catholic Church was started in the 4th century by Constantine.

    About me:
Hi! My name is Vanessa and I am a 22 year old (as of video date) from Los Angeles, California! I am very invested in my faith and found a passion for teaching others about it. My passion all started out due to the fact I wanted to convert someone to Catholicism to make my life easier when it was time to get married. Long story short, that person did not convert, and I was then left with all this knowledge about the faith and about Church history and no where to put it. So now you have it! I want to educate as many people as I can on the faith, and help them understand the truth that Christ has revealed to us through the only, holy, catholic and apostolic Church he founded. I am on my journey to understand more. Everyday I work towards educating myself more and more. I will never hit the finish line of studying in this life, I will continue to learn everyday. With that being said, I may hit some bumps in the road... maybe I will get a few dates wrong... and maybe even pronounce some words wrong (even the English ones!). But I will not let my mistakes stop me, and I will keep striving to make God proud! Feel free to reach out to me via comment. I love and accept every comment regardless if you agree with me or not. I am very grounded in my faith that I do not worry about opposition. In fact, BRING IT ON. I'm just kidding with you all, but seriously, if you have anything to say, drop it in a comment down below. Hope you all have a God blessed day and rest of your week, and I look forward to seeing and hearing from you!

Hi, thanks for the info. For the 1st and 2nd century, I do not see clearly that the confession needs to be to a priest. It just says to confess the sins, but not to a priest. What are your thoughts?

I have many episodes already written and created, as well as working on topics all the time. But I plan to space them out a bit so my viewers have a taste for other series on the channel. I am always up for suggestions for new topics for this series! So be sure to leave some recommendations haha!

In what way is confession the same as repentance? One can go to confession without repentance and one can have perfect contrition without confession.

The quote from Basil the Great is not the truth. In Acts 19 people did not "confess their sins to the apostles by whom they were also baptized." The story in Acts 19 is about Paul and whoever was with him. Paul was reluctant to baptize people in case it was said he baptized in his own name 1Cor 1. Paul said he was not sent to baptize but to preach the gospel. So can we assume it was the others that did the baptisms???
That's a big assumption to say the letters of Ignatius of Antioch support confession. Repentance is not confession.
The earliest Christians confessed their sin publicly notice in the Didache it said "in the congregation thou shalt confess thy transgressions" no mention of private confession to a priest. So in the 1st century believers DID NOT "go" to confession.

    5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
1 John 1:9 - If we confess our sins, HE is faithful and just to forgive us [our] sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

I don't know it seems a little bit read into the texts. There is obviously a good case for confessions to priests. You don't need to make texts say something it doesn't.
Confession isn't the same as repentance.
Confessing to the congregation isn't the same as confessing to a priest.
These things may be connected but they're not equal.

No doubt confession is biblical. But I confess my sin only to God and to the person I have sinned against, not to a priest.
Psalms 32:5 I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah.
James 5:16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

Your comments are missing an important point, the confession was not made in private, as the Catholic church practice today: it was a most public affair, a very humbling experience; opening yourself up to the censure of others. At some point it was considered expedient to bring private confession to the priest: there is no example of this practice in the Bible

  • @kevinsmith6399

Catholicism is not Christianity. Mary is not to be worshiped. Sins are confessed to God. Jesus is the only way to God. Your religion condemns people to hell with works based salvation. We are saved by grace, for Jesus said whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Believe He is the son of God and that he rose again, call his name. Faith. Not works.
